A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. After losing loved ones to suicide at a young age, I made a promise to myself and to them that I would dedicate my life to helping individuals struggling with mental illness. This promise led me to study Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with clinical research investigating the efficacy of treatments for mental illness. Each morning patients came in for assessment and the treatment team developed or altered existing treatment protocols. I longed to be part of this team, working to stabilize each patient so they could return home to pursue their goals. The nurses stood out to me as the team members at ground zero in the unit, working directly with patients, and advocating for them in meetings. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will provide this same standard of holistic care to my patients, taking into consideration their biological, social, psychological and cultural needs while developing and implementing treatment decisions. However, I needed to ensure I could handle the rigorous academic and clinical demands of PA school. Balancing work, school, research, and multiple clubs during my college years proved to be a test of endurance. Despite the challenges, I couldn't bear the thought of giving up on witnessing my patients' smiles as they made progress through therapy. Just as my patients exhibited strength in their recovery, I challenged myself to excel in time management and balance. Weekdays were filled with classes, behavioral research, club events, and executive duties—all aimed at academic success, scientific discovery, supporting classmates, and personal growth.

In addition to the church, and society offers me the opportunity to pursue a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree. The university's foundation and family-centered focus make it a great place for work-study. Although no one ever suggested that my journey to become a Registered Nurse would turn out to be a faith-based journey, I transitioned from Medical Assistant to Registered Nurse in 2017. I enrolled in an LPN program with only 12 weeks until graduation, but the school closed with no further information.
But I’m also comforter, compassionate and great listener which is what most patient need when they’re not feeling well or dealing with life changing situation. Given my past experience starting with medial assisting I think this was the start of me making the decision to pursue nursing based on what I had learned and experienced. After 10 years working as a registered nurse in many aspects of healthcare, felt an overwhelming desire to advance my career and myself to expand my role in caring for others. Becoming a nurse practitioner has always been a goal of mine. During my time working as a nursing manager, I became acutely aware of the need of skilled and talented providers that desire to provide passionate care to all individuals. I became especially concerned with the needs those with limited access to healthcare services. My Intent to Be a Nurse Practitioner Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.
I have decided to become a nurse practitioner to help aid those who are in need and be helpful to people who can only speak Spanish. Communication is key when it comes to health, therefore if I am able to personally understand a patient’s need it will lead to a higher satisfaction among Spanish-speaking patients. My interest in Psychology began during the GCSE course when studying aggression. The nature-nurture debate we had in class when discussing the causes of aggression left me both excited and intrigued into the human psyche. I developed a deeper interest during Psychology AS when studying abnormality, looking at the causes of mental illnesses. Several approaches were covered when debating which we believed to be true, leaving me more fascinated than ever about the nature-nurture debate.
