What Freedom Means to Me
Do you ever wonder what freedom means to you? Many United States citizens have their own opinions on what freedom means to them. What freedom means to me is that we can vote for whoever we want and follow any religion or any church. It also means that it was fought and sacrificed for the United States men and women.
Freedom means to me that I can vote for whomever I want in elections. The fifteenth amendment states that federal and state governments cannot prohibit citizens from the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude. That means that it doesn’t matter if the voter is from Africa and colored or from Great Britain and have a strong British accent they still have the freedom to vote.
To me, freedom means that everyone, regardless of race, has the same rights and equal protection under the law. The Reconstruction amendments were written so that African Americans would have rights equal to those of white citizens. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the US. The 14th granted citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States,” which included former slaves recently freed and the the 15th Amendment in the Constitution granted African American men the right to vote.
“When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in he has no choice but to become an outlaw.” Freedom means different things to different people. For some people, it means you have the freedom to go for a walk without getting the police called on you. For some it may mean practicing the religion they choose, or where they work or live. A historical well-known example of freedom is when Rosa Parks sat in front of the bus she was asked to go to the back she refused to.
Freedom has been the central belief of America since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Since this day, America has worked hard to keep the idea that America is the “land of the free.” However, throughout the construction of this nation, freedom was defined differently by each person. Freedom to African Americans meant liberty from enslavement and land ownership. Freedom to Europeans meant freedom of religion and government.
Webster Dictionary defines freedom as a “political right”. To me, freedom is much more than that. Freedom gives me and the people of America the right to do anything we want; it allows us to be ourselves no matter where you come from, or who you are. Unfortunately, America has not always been this way; people of different races were treated like trash on the sidewalk. Frederick Douglass had a first-hand experience to this treatment, and he knew what it was like before America allowed everyone to actually be “free”.
According to dictionary.com, freedom means “political or national independents”, but in reality it means much more than that. During the revolutionary war, four thousand four hundred and thirty-five lives were lost in order to gain independence and freedom for all Americans. I believe that freedom means that people can express themselves however they want and that they can make decisions for themselves. I think that this is true because people can choose their religion, have the freedom of speech, and can stand up for what they believe is right. Freedom of religion was part of the First Amendment to the Declaration of Independence, which means that people are able to choose their religion and can freely worship.
Freedom (liberty) is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without resistance. Freedom is America's honor, and honor comes with obligations and we have the obligation to use our freedom wisely. We can accept or reject the obligations, but we must choose well. One way we have our freedom is because of the Declaration of Independence and first ten Amendments of the Constitution or The Bill of Rights.
According to Google, a popular website, freedom means, “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.” This isn’t really true because, there is so much more to freedom. Freedom has many different definitions. It is more than a sentence on paper. Just like you are more than a human being.
Freedom gives me the right to worship god in church, to be able to speak what I believe in. Freedom is being able to say what is wrong or right . Some countries live in a world where they have no say in what's right and wrong. Some countries live in they have no say what is right or wrong. They live and have only what they are told they can have.

Never in my life have I been asked this question but after reading the first week’s lectures, it is becoming clear to me. Liberty means I am not a slave, I am free. Introduction The concept of freedom and the issues surrounding it are important to American thought and culture. The very universality of the idea of freedom, however, can be misleading. Freedom is not a fixed, timeless category with a single unchanging definition.”
