The United States of America is, and continues to be, associated in many people’s minds with freedom. A handful of individuals between 1400-1800 CE can be held accountable for this conceptualization of American Freedom. Some men such as Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson aided or attempted to aid the African slaves imported to the British colonies during the 18th century in there fight for freedom. Meanwhile a large portion of the white population in the colonies was being denied basic civil liberties and omitting John and Abigail Adams no one seemed to care. One man in this time appears to have no concern for the freedoms of any group of people, including his subjects.

By using the countries’ own governmental document, Anthony masterfully poses, “In this very first paragraph of the declaration, is the assertion of the natural right of all to the ballot; for, how can “the consent of the governed” be given, if the right to vote be denied. Again: ‘That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new government, laying its foundations on such principles’” (Anthony par. 4-5). Women are citizens of the United States who are governed, yet they have no say in their government.

It stated that “the right of citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex” (The library of Congress) It emphasizes that we shall not be denied the voting rights of women by judging based on the gender. Women want a chance. They want a chance to prove themselves, and they want a chance to prove that they are no less than men on any level. Politicians may think that the 19th amendment was enough to prove women’s equality, but the right to vote does not even begin to compare to what women have to go through on a daily basis and how hard they have to work to get recognition and thrive in today’s society. Not only did women fight for this, some men also used their power to fight for them. These very few men that fought for women’s suffrage saw the potential in women and knew that they were not any less than men, they are citizens of the United States and should be treated like they are.

And we formed it, not to give the blessings of liberty, but to secure them; not to the half of ourselves and the half of our posterity, but to the whole people - women as well as men”. (Anthony, 1872). Ms. Anthony mentions in her message that women and men are citizens, and how can women not be able to vote based on sex qualification? Her speech leaves very little room for argument. She goes on to say that it doesn’t state that only males can vote or in general.

After the deaths of many of the women’s rights activists from the older generation, younger leaders began to take charge, and they often aligned themselves with the Progressives. During this time, women’s roles were viewed as homemakers, so many of the Progressive women defended their reform actions as an extension of the traditional role of women. Among, the many values held for many decades by these reformers was the right to vote for women. In her piece, “Why Women Should Vote”, Jane Adams argued how women needed this right “in order to preserve the home,” (Doc C). These views developed into the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which gave women the right to vote.

Discrimination Against Women Women did not win the rights to vote until 1920 when the Nineteenth Amendment was adopted. Supreme court said that discrimination against women did not violate the Fourteenth Amendment because these laws protected the “weaker sex” from the night work. Reasonableness Standard In 1977, Court wrote that treating women differently from men cannot be based merely on “old notions” about women and “the role - typing society has long imposed on women”.

The Constitution gives us rights that nobody can take away from us. Starting with the very first amendment granting us freedom of speech. The first 10 were in the Bill of rights written way back in 1791 giving us in detail 10 rights as a citizen. With 27 amendments now (the most recent added in 1992) we have a lot of rights as Americans. Some of these rights were gained through tradition and time.

The American revolution was all about freedom and liberty. Characters throughout the story voice different opinions on their idea of freedom and liberty. During this fight for freedom and liberty, there were three main groups. Patriots(colonist against the king), Loyalists(colonist for the king), and the slaves. They all describe freedom and liberty in different ways.

Most people think that women voting now a days is normal but it was only not too long ago, on August 18, 1920, that women first gained the right to vote. Securing the right to vote for women was not easy and took many years for the 19th Amendment to finally be ratified. The 19th Amendment granted American women the right to vote and states that the right of citizens shall not be denied by the United States or by any state because of ones’ gender (“19th Amendment”). Many different groups and conventions were formed to help spread the word that women should be able to have the right to vote. Within these groups were many different suffragettes that helped win the vote at last.

How they couldn’t vote and how they didn’t have the rights that white men had. But throughout the whole speech, she is trying to convince people to start a big ordeal on how white men are not the only ones able to vote. In conclusion, the author is speaking to her fellow women and the to the wrong white men of the United States. Her purpose of making this speech is that woman have just as much right to vote as white men do.

The 19th amendment guaranteed voting rights to all American citizens. This amendment prohibits any American citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of gender. It is one of the biggest accomplishments from the women’s rights movement in the United States. The women’s rights movement had been a long and difficult road to gain equality.
