As a first year student nurse I understood the importance of communication within practice placement and in our day-to-day lives. As a second year student I feel that I have more awareness on the significance of communication. Metaphorically I see communication as the root of a tree and from it springs essential skills that without communication one would not be able to achieve; for example, compassion, empathy, unconditional positive regard, congruence, self-awareness and it maintains professionalism. When we amalgamate all of these we create a specialist service for those who we care for (Baughan & Smith, 2008). I believe that people can pick up on how people are feeling without having to say a word, Egan (1998) and Rogers (1995) concur.
According to PAULA GRALING who is a DNP, RN, CNOR, FAAN CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST, DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY, INOVA FAIRFAX MEDICAL CAMPUS ,FALLS CHURCH, VA; “Nurses become the champion of change should work with your doctor to develop an atmosphere of mutual respect and stroke and other medical colleagues. We need to get used to using the vocabulary and evaluation tool that is used to measure the quality of the communication. Nurses, thoughtful, in the case of stakeholders for collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork can we create and maintain with our environment and safety culture.”
Ms. Martin is a 14 year old female who presented to the ED after an altercation between her mother and she. She denies suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, and symptoms of psychosis to nursing staff. At the time of the assessment Ms. Martin is calm and cooperative. She reports tonight her mother would not let her eat a pop-tart for dinner and she became anger and proceeded to hit her mother. Ms. Martin states she only gets angry at her mother and lashes out at her.
Aiken (2002) study shows that the nursing shortage has negatively affected communication, nurse patient relationships and timeliness of care and overall competence of nurse’s professional identity. For example, the Francis report in 2013 at the mid Staffordshire foundation trust investigation had bad indication on nurses, healthcare and all the staff in connection to the negative and culture that caused harm to patient. In order to resolve this issue the NHS has to reflect on the nurses’ professional identity, encourage nurses, provide support, and reorganise the work environment (Buerhaus, 2007). A research study conducted by Johnson and Johnson (2012), found that nurses fear that talking about their technical skills and medical knowledge somehow risks their reputation for caring and compassion.
In conclusion, this synthesis has explored the vitalness of therapeutic communication in improving patient-centred care. Through being more aware of one's self, using positive verbal/non-verbal language, active listening, showing empathy and building a trusting and respectful relationship, a nurse is able to create a healing therapeutic environment for the patient, leading to positive experiences and outcomes for each party
“Clear and appropriate communication is essential for providing effective nursing care and presents a unique challenge to nurses today” (Kearney-Nunnery, 2012, p. 109). According to Bramhall (2014), Effective communication one of the basic skills of nursing staff, which enhances patient care. Add to this the communication plays an important role in showing empathy and thus it becomes easy for the patient to report positive experiences or even the bad ones. I think that the most important things are to communicate not only with the patient but also with healthcare team members. In addition, nurses need to be able to communicate successfully with all member of the health care providers and to provide and give the full information about the patient

During the maternity clinical I had experienced patient teaching moment. However, there was a specific experience in which my assigned patient had just delivered her first child and waiting for teaching about car seat safety before her discharge. My assigned nurse was unavailable to do the teaching at that moment. In an Attempt to help with the patient teaching and discharge I gathered the required paperwork for my patient to read; so that when the nurse became available the patient would have already familiarized herself with some of the information. In doing this, I elicited to help of another nurse, which ended up being a mistake.
A Reflection on my Development of Non-verbal Communication and Empathy In this annotated bibliography, I summarized and critiqued three peer-reviewed articles. I also reflected on how these articles changed my view on how foundational registered nursing skills, such as non-verbal communication and empathy, develop. Chan, Z. Y. (2013). A qualitative study on non-verbal sensitivity in nursing students.
In healthcare, certain factors affect good nurse-patient communication which are time, language, environment, shortage of nursing staff, assumptions etc. These factors lead to error in medication, misdiagnosis and even death. To provide the best care for the patient, the nurse must overcome these barriers and practice good patient-centered communication. So, with good communication, the nurse can express empathy for the patient, promoting an atmosphere of healing and comfort. With good communication, the nurse can properly educate her patient, leading to better care in the hospital and in the home. “Effective communication is one of the most vital components of healthcare” (Crouch et al. , 2013). It is through effective communication that nurses are able to discuss their client’s needs and provide all the necessary elements for increased healing both physically and mentally. Nurses are able to form a therapeutic relationships with their clients through various forms of communication and provide the best care needed for not only the client but for the family members of the client as well. One of the many ways to establish a strong therapeutic relationship with patients is to make the patient feel at ease with humour. Friendliness and laughter are important factors when forming trust between nurses and patient.
Communication skills are very essential for nurses as they are the front liner in either public or private hospitals.
