“Effective communication is one of the most vital components of healthcare” (Crouch et al. , 2013). It is through effective communication that nurses are able to discuss their client’s needs and provide all the necessary elements for increased healing both physically and mentally. Nurses are able to form a therapeutic relationships with their clients through various forms of communication and provide the best care needed for not only the client but for the family members of the client as well. One of the many ways to establish a strong therapeutic relationship with patients is to make the patient feel at ease with humour. Friendliness and laughter are important factors when forming trust between nurses and patient. This paper is going to explore …show more content…
Such patients who feel overpowered, are less likely to express their fears and discuss difficult matters which may heavily result in a negative impact on their health. According to the new research conducted by Old (2012), “…male patients [are likely to] use humour to conceal their feelings [and…] would find it easier to discuss difficult matters with a nurse who has a sense of humour” (p. 39). Thus, as a nurse it is their responsibility to communicate with their patients in unique and fun ways by yet maintaining their boundaries. By sprinkling their conversations with some humour depending on the situation and patient, they can build a strong therapeutic nurse-client relationship. There may be some cases where the nurse-client relationship might be on a personal level however, with this unique bonding nurses will be able to advocate and provide appropriate care for the patient. This is backed up by the recent research by Treymayne where he concluded that with the use of little humour between the nurse and client, it can result in a strong therapeutic relationship which is somewhat on a personal level which can then “be applied to clinical practice” (Treymayne, 2014, p.38). With the personal bond between the nurse and the patient, the patients are likely to respond well to their treatment and heal faster due to a healthy state of mind. Slight …show more content…
Communication between a nurse and small child maybe hard because children do not have strong communications skills and tend to shy away from strangers. Therefore, building rapport is a must and can be done by successfully integrating humour in the conversation. According to many previous studies done by researchers, they have all come to the conclusion that, “children […] appreciate humour that contains imagery, while the use of visual aids or songs may stimulate greater engagement”. ((Williams et al 2009, Killick 2010, Pryor 2010). Use of humour with little kids can help nurses be diligent in their roles and provide advocacy and empathy and competency. For the nurse to be able to care according to their standards a strong bond is necessary between the client and patient and with little kids humour is the best to become way to their favorite buddies so they cooperate during clinical procedures for example when giving them a shot. According to research done by Ford et al (2011) on little kids, they found that little kids like nurses who are able to make them laugh and have a smiley face and are funny. This clearly shows how a funny nurse and approachable nurse can be a great companion for a child in the hospital setting and provide splendid care while still maintaining
And people begin saying that it smells like a commitment and roses, and everyone begins to cheer and laugh together. Boyle claims that compassion is not about feeling another’s pain, but rather it is about bringing another person towards yourself. (74) . And Thus Father Boyle shows another assertion about how humor is a great centralization of keep your head up through struggles and disappointment.
As I finished the Batman joke, I saw that the patient still had an unamused face, and it seemed that he held his stomach tighter. I told that joke all week to ease patients, but it only made this child agitated. It was my fifth day at my medical assistant internship, and I was still partially doing my job wrong, but I was able to get all my patients to laugh or smile. As I struggled to place the barometer cuff on the bend of the boy’s elbow and the stethoscope under the cuff, I asked his mother why they came for a visit. " He is coughing again.
For example, on their fishing excursion McMurphy “knows [they] have to laugh at the things that hurt... to keep the world from running plumb crazy… he’ll let the humor blot out the pain” (Kesey 250). Accepting the absurdity and adopting a sense of humor is important to get through the negative and spread laughter and joy rather than accept the dull fate of ordinary life. McMurphy acts as a savior who brings happiness and vibrant life to the patients by exposing them to laughter and humor. McMurphy gives confidence to the

In the book, Shawn is confronted with an assistant OT by the name of Charlie who is filled with stories and humor. Humor can be an important factor as it can bring warmth allowing for a closer relationship between the patient and the health care provider. In the book Shawn talks about Charlie in a positive way, “Charlie was always humorous and he always had a story to tell” (Jennings, 2002, p.71). Although humor could potentially be an unsuccessful form of verbal communication because certain cultures believe different things and may not find the same things humorous. When using humor it is important to observe the patient and their vulture before trying to bring in a humorous topic in.
humor and laughter signal empathy and a readiness to cooperate (Jung, 2003) f. humor is a form of group-selected honest signalling that coordinates the emotions and actions of group members (Gervais & Wilson, 2005) g. humor may have partly evolved as an indicator of intelligence for potential mates (Greengross & Miller, 2011). Nowadays, the term humor is considered “as the highest and richest form of comedy, denoting anything witty or anything that makes us laugh” (Weaver & Cotrell, 2001). Additionally, “humor is understood as a collection of mental processes that are involved in both creating and perceiving an amusing stimulus, as well as the affective response in the enjoyment of this stimulus” (Martin, 2007). In the communicative context, humor is ‘‘any communication perceived by any of the interacting parties as humorous and leads to laughing, smiling or a feeling of amusement’’ (Robinson, 1977). Furthermore, Lovorn (2008) states that laughter is described by humor researchers, as a response to pleasurable and/or amusing physical, emotional and/or intellectual
In the past I have shown my strength in this area of nursing care when looking after family members that have fallen victim to sickness. Whenever someone tells me that they are not feeling well, I immediately jump into action and try my best to make sure that they feel “cared for” .The feeling of pride and satisfaction I experience after caring for a person that is unwell is what originally made me choose nursing as a career. Caring is a basic attribute of human growth and development (Griffin 1983). This is why, as a nursing student I know it is such an important strength to be utilised when helping a patient to feel better.
Psychiatrist Teaches Parents How To Make Their Kids Laugh in Book Dr. Joel Schwartz offers parents practical tips on how to instill a sense of humor in their children. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Joel Schwartz knows humor is an important key to a child’s development, and he recognizes the role of parents in encouraging their children to develop a sense of humor. For this reason, Dr. Schwartz published Noses Are Red: How to Nurture Your Child 's Sense of Humor (Stress Less Shrink Publishing, 2006). Noses Are Red could pass off as a parenting guide and child psychology book, but it is simply one of the fewest books that touch on the topic of humor and children, which seems frivolous to study about.
Hildegard Peplau viewed nursing as “a significant, therapeutic, interpersonal process. It functions co-operatively with other human processes that make health possible for individuals in communities" (Peplau, 1952). This quote, encapsulates her theory of interpersonal relations. Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory focuses on the nurses’ role, which is to help patients identify their difficulties (“Theory of”, 2012). Peplau explains that the nurse assumes different roles as the relationship between patient and nurse progresses and develops (Feely, 1997).
For examples, Schrecengost conducted a study to discover whether the use of humour in preoperative instruction affects patient’s recall of the
The purpose of this paper is to present the sociological meaning behind the negative attitudesofapersoninrelationtocommunicationanditseffecttoothers. Thisissignificant because in nursing, communication is vital. All the members of the health care team (doctors, nurses, psychiatrist, physical therapist, dietician, etc.) even the patient should collaborate and communicate with each other so that they will come up with a holistic approach in managing the patient’s health to ensure patient safety. Understanding or discovering more about the negatives attitudes of a nurse (e.g.facialexpression:frowning, grimaces, postures, point of view) to patient care will enable us to know its effects to the patient’s well-being and his/her compliance to his/her treatment plan.
In a research by Martin et al. (2003), the development and validation of the Humor Styles Questionnaire was described. The Humor Styles Questionnaire assessed the four dimensions relating to individual differences in the use of humor, namely, affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive and self-defeating humor. The researchers were of the opinion that in order to study the relationship between humor and psychological health, it is very important to examine the ways in which humor is used by individuals in their daily lives. One of the primary aims of the investigation was to study how an individual’s tendency to use humor as a coping strategy was related to different humor styles.
