The unsolved murder of JonBenet Ramsey, in 1996, remains one of the most discussed, and criticized cases in the United States. Even after 20 years, people, and the so called “experts” in all forms of law enforcement have their own theories, although nothing has been proven, and no suspects have been identified or brought to trial. The case of the murder of JonBenet Ramsey started in the early morning hours of December 26, 1996, in Boulder, Colorado (Saferstein, 2011). At approximately 5:00 in the morning, Patsy Ramsey left her bedroom, and intended to go to the kitchen. When she reached the bottom of the stairs, Patsy Ramsey found a two and a half page ransom note, which informed her that her six year old daughter, JonBenet, had been …show more content…
While searching the house, Ramsey and White went into the basement, and after looking around, John Ramsey opened the door to, what was later identified as the wine cellar, and turned on the light. At that time John Ramsey found the body of JonBenet on the floor. Instead of calling out to the police, who were in the house, John Ramsey removed the white blanket, which had been covering the body, and carried JonBenet’s body up to the living room and placed her on the floor (Saferstein, 2011). This action alone, contaminated the crime scene, and may have possibly damaged or caused valuable evidence to be lost. When the body of JonBenet was found, her mouth and neck were bound with duct tape, and she had been strangled with a garrote (Denver Post, 1999). While some of the details of this case, up to this point, may seem strange to a seasoned investigator, the case took other odd twists and …show more content…
They did offer to submit to the interviews, but only if they could review all of the evidence, which had been gathered by that time. This offer was rejected by the police. Then, on January 29, 1998, the Ramseys turn over the clothes, which they had been wearing the night of the murder, to the police as evidence. The items which were turned over were two shirts, a sweater, and one pair of pants. What is interesting about this is the second pair of pants was not included, and that this was done more than a year after the murder occurred. The investigation continued as a police investigation until the District Attorney’s office was asked to take over the investigation on March 12, 1998 (Denver Post, 1999). The net development, of note, in the case occurred on June 24, 1998, when the Ramseys return to Colorado to be interrogated by the District Attorney’s investigators (Denver Post, 1999). It was at this time that Burke Ramsey, JonBenet’s 11 year old brother is questioned for the first time, even though he was in the house on the night the murder took place. On September 16, 1998, the assembled grand jury begins their investigation into the case, and tis investigation lasted for more than a year, and ultimately, no indictments were issued, and no responsible parties were ever identified (Denver Post,
New DNA could lead to more clues in the investigation, Biography stated this, “In July 2008, new "touch DNA" technology seemed to exonerate all members of JonBenét’s family in the 1996 killing,” ("JonBenét Ramsey"). With the new technology, we have today DNA can be taken and tested in a couple days of a crime, it is also very reliable. Not to mention all the pressure put on the parents of the family, finding DNA other than their families was a relief. The DNA found led police away from the family, CNN Library stated,“Early suspicion fell on her parents, but they were exonerated after DNA at the scene was found to belong to a male unrelated to the Ramsey family,” ("JonBenet Ramsey"). Since the DNA did not match to any of the family members, they now have to find who actually committed the crime.
JonBenet Ramsey Case On the morning of December 29th, 1996, Patsy Ramsey got dressed and went downstairs to start getting prepared for the day. What she was not prepared for was the ransom note that was left for her at the bottom of the stairs. JonBenet Ramsey, Patsy’s six-year-old daughter and, had been kidnapped. The note said that if Patsy and the rest of her family did not listen and do what was on the note then JonBenet would be killed.
First is that an intruder broke into their home, wrote the note, and killed JonBenét. Next is the mother Patsy, who might have had a motive of jealousy from the attention her daughter received, and thus killed her and had John help cover it up. Lastly, Burke may have unintentionally murdered his sister by hitting her with a flashlight after she took his food and ran, but John and Patsy staged it to be as if someone else had kidnapped and murdered her. If the crime scene had not been contaminated, if family and friends spoke to the police further, and if Burke would have spoken in depth about his childhood relationship with his sister – the investigation may have had further evidence to go upon. Nonetheless, the Boulder County attorney declared on October 13th, 1999 that there was not enough sufficient evidence to declare anyone as the culprit.

There were many reports filed that questioned the police’s overall handling of this case and defamation suits filed by the Ramsey family against media organizations. The first mistake that was made in this case was allowing family and friends in and out of the Ramsey house after a kidnapping was reported. The police officers should have immediately sealed off the crime scene and taken full statements from JonBenet’s parents to study their behavior. There was also no attempt to gather sufficient forensic evidence before JonBenet’s body was found. Once the body was found, John Ramsey carried it upstairs before there was any examination.
JonBenet Ramsey who was a young loving beauty queen of Colorado, who’s live was taken way too early. JonBenet was murdered in her home in Boulder Colorado on December 26, 1996 at the age of six. After completing my research, I was able to make a prediction of who I believed murdered the incent child, and it did not take much research to see the mistakes made by the Boulder Police Department. First suspect, Gary Oliva, lived a few blocks from the Ramseys. In 2000 Oliva was arrested on unrelated drug charges. When arrested a picture of JonBenét was found in his backpack that he carried. Oliva responded to the picture by saying how JonBenét’s murder touched him very deeply. He felt she was an exceptional girl whose death was an exceptional loss.
JonBenet Ramsey was a 6-year-old beauty queen. On December 26, 1996 around 5:45am JonBenet’s mother, Patsy Ramsey, discovered a two page and a half note sitting on the steps inside the house after noticing that JonBenet wasn’t in her bed. The ransom note stated that they had their daughter held hostage, and the only way to get her back is if they give them $118,000. When the police showed up they started to investigate the whole house. By 1:00pm the detectives and investigators still haven't found any evidence.
Over the next four years, officers with the Boulder Police Department worked diligently investigating the murder case, but were unable to come forward with definitive evidence on a particular suspect. There was evidence of fibers found on the duct tape used to bind the child which were consistent with fibers found on Patsy Ramsey’s clothing. Also the ransom note was written on the same paper which was owned by the Ramsey family. This caused the Ramsey family to be the prime suspects of the murder of Jonbenet, and it crucified their reputation in the eyes of the public (Biography.com, 2016).
The murder of Jonbenet Ramsey is a really depressing and mysterious at that. The murder was extremely brutal, she had wounds on her face, a cracked skull, duct tape on her mouth, she was tied up, and she had a garrote around her neck. According to the documentary we watched she was hit in the head with a flashlight and then strangled with a garrote. It was expected that she snatched a piece of pineapple from her brother’s bowl in which he hit her with a flashlight because of it, and she was still alive so it was most likely the parents got in on it because they didn’t want to be filed for abuse and jailed so they strangled her to death and put a blanket over her body, breaking a window and adding a ransom note to make it seem like someone broke in.
