Summary: The Murder Of Jonbenet Ramsey

“There. We have a, there’s a note left and our daughter’s gone.” Were Patsy Ramsey's words while on the phone, reporting her six year old daughter’s disappearance to 911 at 5:52 a.m. on Christmas day in 1996. The missing six year old girl was JonBenet Ramsey. When she was found murdered, it was obvious she suffered from various injuries.

On December 26, 1996, JonBenet Ramsey, a 6 year old found dead in her home on day of Christmas. A handwritten two-three page ransom letter was left behind requesting a large amount of money of $118,000. An examiner by the name Detective Sgt. Robert Whitson, who is now retired from the Boulder Police Department notice the top of the note pad had a written word saying “Mr. and Mrs.” along with the letter ®. After reviewing the writing it seem as if the intruder was trying to determine what needed to be written.

The initial investigation was extensive, however, the killer was not found. Today, the world still doesn’t know who had killed Jonbenét Ramsey or why. People have speculated whether an intruder had killed Jonbenét Ramsey, or someone within the family. The police kept their investigation pool very small, they didn’t interview most people, and when they thought they had a lead they would interview that person more than once instead of trying to use the DNA evidence. Many think it was written by Burke and the parents because of the messy handwriting and it was also found to have been written in Burke’s notebook. Also being signed with the abbreviation “S.T.B.C.”, which can mean Christianity, “Saved By The Cross.” The Ramseys are known to be a Christian family.

Police were called the following morning to report that their daughter had gone missing. Police found a ransom note demanding 118,000 dollars, this never came to a complete investigation. The police investigation began instantly as a child abduction case, but soon took a turn for the worse when Jonbenet’s father, John Ramsey found her dead in the basement of her own house. “She was lying on the cold cement floor of the wine cellar with blood and bruises on her head, and a cord around her neck” (Agrawal). Immediately the child abduction case turned into that of a cold blooded murder. “The police should have done a better job controlling the crime scene from the begining” (Adams). With John Ramsey picking up his daughter’s dead body, and family friends walking around the house all morning, the chances of finding any evidence within the house was diminished.

According to the Denver Police Department, the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey was never solved. Many investigators spent years trying to reveal the case but somehow there was always a flip side to the story. In fact, fingerprint systems were used on various counts within this certain case. Investigators noticed that there was a great deal more to this case, than Mr. Ramsey was telling officials. According to investigators, Jonbenet had been sexually assaulted within 48 hours of her murder.

This ransom note was oddly two and a half pages long in length, the shocking part is that this note was written with a notebook pad and pen from the Ramsey’s home. Specifically, Patsy Ramsey’s notebook which still had the imprints of the writing. This means that the note was written during the scene. Former Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner who headed JonBenét’s murder investigation, said that experts had never heard of a ransom note of this length. Odd enough, the ransom note demanded 118,000 dollars in return of JonBenét.

When I looked at the handwriting of the ransom note and the handwriting of Patsy, there are some similarities, within the letters. Any individual can make their handwriting look sloppy, but there will always be similarities. I believe Patsy could have been irritated by something that JonBent could have possibly done, which caused Patsy to hit JonBent with a forceful object that could have caused serious brain damage. After JonBenet’s body was collected, the investigators gathered the evidence. What they found made it seem JonBenet’s family were suspects. According to a documentary, the ransom note was written on paper that belonged to the Ramsey’s; the duct tape that was used to bind her was consisted with fibers they found on Patsy’s clothing.
