The Industrial Revolution: Successes and Dangers The Industrial revolution was a period of great success but it came with danger. This time of invention and breakthrough was important in forming what America is today. The Industrial Revolution brought great change and it made many people's lives easier. This success did lead to the downfall as many citizens lost their jobs. Along with the loss of jobs the factories of this time polluted the air and destroyed valuable natural resources. “Numerous new tools and machines were created as a result of the speeding up of technological innovation processes” (Education | National Geographic Society). A great invention made during this time was the steam engine. The steam engine was a machine that used …show more content…
It was created and utilized in a way that made communication easier. “The Telegraph allowed instant communication over vast distances for the first time in human history”(elon.edu) . It allowed people to send messages longer distances. It improved many areas of work, like markets and transportation systems, by sharing information on the area. People could also use morse code on this machine to secretly send messages or ask for help. The Telegraph, along with the steam engine, were inventions that were great successes during the Industrial Revolution and they offered a new way of living to those in need of travel and …show more content…
“Workers were forced to leave their families and migrate to urban areas in search of jobs. They worked long hours, were poorly nourished and lived in overcrowded conditions, which led to disease and stress”(Blokhin 1). Many people lost their jobs due to new machines and unhealthy work conditions. New machines replaced craftspeople because the machine could work faster and more efficiently. The machines stole important roles and over 200,000 people were stripped of their jobs. Many people also lost their jobs due to health conditions. The factories that people had to work in were dirty and neglected. The factories were unexamined so they did not have to make it safe. Dangerous machines were lined in tight spaces with many people working on them. Workers did not have any protection and wore inappropriate clothing for their job. When a worker got sick or injured they would not be able to work which meant they could not be paid. If the worker was sick or hurt for too long they would be replaced and left without money or a job. The constant replacement of workers was bad for the community. Some factories made Kids take the role of manning a machine. This was a very dangerous thing because they were inexperienced. The working conditions of this time were very hazardous and the lives of workers were threatened in many ways. The city streets were crowded and urbanization led
This causes there to be child labor, kids were working 14 hour days doing work that were to dangerous for them. Since wages were low and large population families would live in tenements with two to three families. There was lack of fresh water and poor sewage systems which caused diseases. There was unsanitary work conditions like the meat packing business. Even though there was diseases in the
Workers rights were very minimal and their was uproar among the workers. Many lower class impoverished workers forced to terrible conditions and
Although many people were being employed and paid, working conditions were very hazardous and payment was unfair. Workers would work twelve to eighteen hours a day, but got poorly paid by their
Working in the factory the worker had no type of rights or even benefits that could help them in the long run. These workers had to work up sixteen hours a day just to make the small amount that they get and they couldn’t have any type of insurance or health benefits. During, this time adults were the only one working in the factories, little kids were working in the factory as well. Since, the workers didn’t get pay as much money they can’t afford to put enough food on the table. These low wage affected the workers very harshly and their families, the workers didn’t have enough buy food to provide for their family and the rent was too high to pay off.
The factories were also not heated or cooled so the workers would get very hot or very cold. Back then there were no laws to protect the lives of the workers and most of the time the factory owners cared meore about the making of money than the employies which also didn’t help with the saftey issues. There were
During the 19th century in Great Britain, there was a sudden rise in machines and new inventions that would simplify many difficult jobs for humans. Many workers were forced off farms and into factories to help these machines work. Poor farmers were the only ones who were forced into working in the factories because they had no money. This sudden change in the way society functioned brought up many different arguments from people who had very radical opinions. Although industrialization improved society in many ways, for example, the increase in money and food, it also derailed most of society.
Some of the conditions were low pays, no safe at all to work in, over crowed in factories, working days were long. Some people work 10 to 12 hours a day. There was no job security, no workman’s companion , no retirement fund.
However, working in a factory usually meant harsh and unsafe conditions, a low pay rate, and long working hours (Carter and Wilkinson). The workers were also forced to live in crowded conditions, and often had poor housing and low sanitation (Betts). With this in mind, there was an increase in deaths not only from the disease, and many were killed or injured due to harsh conditions. Their work was more strictly monitored, and people had to work long hours, their time was managed by the factory owner, and was harmful to their health (Betts). As a result of employment, there was an increased demand for laborers, specifically children.
The release of harmful gases into the air from factories pollutes the world 's air, doing harm to the environment, further leading to global warming. Then, though it did boost many job opportunities, the living condition of the workers during the industrialization were poor. Company towns owned by business were rented out to employees. The owners forced them to live in isolated communities near workshops and forced them to buy goods with high interests. The cities were poorly constructed and crowded with people and residents.
The workers had to work through the longest shifts and take the lowest pay. Many were not happy with this, they wanted improvement. Supporters began to speak out about it. The move to industrialization changed living and working conditions. Many had no sympathy for the working class, they believed free markets would help improve the working conditions.
During the mid-1700s, Great Britain underwent industrialization as a result of the Agrarian Revolution's increase in population due to improved farming methods and technology. The Industrial Revolution brought about new machinery like the seed drill, which made farming more efficient and contributed to the growth of urban areas as people moved from rural areas. While the Industrial Revolution brought many positive changes, it also had negative impacts. The Industrial Revolution brought about the factory system, which led to mass production of goods in Great Britain using machines such as the flying shuttle, the spinning jenny, and the water frame, as seen in Document 2.
The child labor was a huge problem in the United State. They would children doing dangerous jobs, some children would even die from doing these chores. The 1890s there were about 1 million 10 - 15 years olds who worked, that number had doubled by 1910. Industries even hired 5 and 6 year olds to work 18 hours a day. Along with this there were health conditions like miners inhaling stuff from the mines, glassworker exposed to intense heat and clam breakers would have cut on their hands from the tough shells.
Farmers were abused by the railroad freight fees, the world market’s dramatic drop of commodity prices caused by overproduction, and tariffs for their goods which resulted in the farmers to be continuously be stuck in debt. Industrial workers constantly suffered in poor working conditions and low pay. It was not uncommon for most workers to work more than ten hours a day. They were also faced with job instability. Missing a day of work could easily could get them fired, and if a worker was faced with an injury or sickness they would have to suck it up and continue working because there was no “sick days”.
They couldn't just go outside and play when they wanted because they had to work. Also, children lost their hands and arms from the machines, and some got their skin stripped to the bone, and some would lose a finger or two. Some more reasons why I think that about the factories is that they had to work 72 hours a week. With very little
Although some of these inventions cost a lot of money, they benefitted the economy greatly. The telegraph was one of the most successful inventions at the time It expanded the range of communications infinitely. By using the telegraph governments were able to communicate faster.
