The Industrial Revolution occurred around 1760 to 1830 and was a period when manufacturing by hand transitioned into mechanization and new ideas transformed the world. The revolution began in the United Kingdom, due to the fact that the country was politically stable, had recently undergone an agricultural revolution, and had access to important resources such as iron, steel, and coal ("Industrial Revolution"). Due to the exploding English population, more people were seeking jobs, which allowed new industries to thrive. Britain also had a more advanced banking system than France and fewer regulations than competing nations, which provided the English with economic advantages. During this time, many countries, in particular, France and Japan, …show more content…
Business in 18th century England had labor divided into distinct tasks, such as industrial fields (mainly women), operating machines that would make clothes, glass, pottery, and more (Betts). The factory owners set strict rules for when and how the laborers would work. This was a new adjustment for people, as this increase in specialization forced men, women, and children to work in factories due to the demand for labor. The factory system had many advantages that included lower costs, larger production, and stable jobs (Carter and Wilkinson). There were many opportunities that increased employment and the population, which improved the efficiency of work. However, working in a factory usually meant harsh and unsafe conditions, a low pay rate, and long working hours (Carter and Wilkinson). The workers were also forced to live in crowded conditions, and often had poor housing and low sanitation (Betts). With this in mind, there was an increase in deaths not only from the disease, and many were killed or injured due to harsh conditions. Their work was more strictly monitored, and people had to work long hours, their time was managed by the factory owner, and was harmful to their health (Betts). As a result of employment, there was an increased demand for laborers, specifically children. This benefited the industries by making payment cheaper, more manageable, and …show more content…
At first, the telephone was used only by the wealthy, but by the mid-20th century, it was a common household object utilized by people around the world (Duignan and Rafferty). This new device was created to improve and create a more accessible way to interact with people from a distance. The economy was developing quickly and became vigorous due to the fast production in factories ("The Social Impact of the Industrial Revolution"). The productivity rates in England grew by 130% in 1850 compared to 1500, which increased the demand for labor and efficiency in factories (Heckman and Leamer). While the Industrial Revolution had many benefits for the economy, there were also negative effects, such as the fact that the new factories caused an increase of soil and air pollution (Kiger). This caused many deaths and respiratory illnesses in certain areas that burned a lot of coal. Also, not all people were open to the new technological advantages, and some revolted against industrialization. For example, there was a public outcry from a group of people known as the Luddites who were opposed to new advancements in technology due to the threat to their textile jobs and the danger of making their jobs obsolete. (Cartwright et al.) These positive and negative outcomes of industrialization have built a community that is developing for the evolving
The Industrial Revolution began in England in the 1700’s. England was the starting point of the Industrial Revolution for many reasons. It started not just because they had the right resources but they had true grit. The revolution boomed because England had the right resources, the workers came running for work and inventions were made to make the process of the work, flow a lot faster and more efficient. During the late 18th through the19th century, the industrial revolution created many changes in regards to labor. Many people of the working class were affected positively in the way of new jobs, better quality products, and quality of life (Doc3, Doc4, Doc 5). While others lost family or experienced a decrease in the quality of life (Doc1, Doc2, Doc7). Some workers soon became dependent on technological machinery (Doc 6, Doc 8, Doc 9). Many workers lives during The Industrial Revolution were changed for the positive as many people such as children had a chance to enrich their lives because they were given a purpose (Doc 3).
The Industrial Revolution was a period between both the seventeen as well as eighteen hundreds, and was mainly acknowledged as a time of immense change. Throughout the numerous years, various inventions were shortly to be developed such as the refined Newcomen steam engine, the cotton mill machine, and most importantly, the water frame. These modern developments certainly affected the revolution positively, though after several years however, factories for these inventions were eventually to be manufactured. The factories in particular were privately operated by wealthy factory owners who required others to complete the complex tasks. According to the wealthy operators, the less fortunate of mankind were required to complete these hazardous duties.
The Industrial Revolution occured in the early 1800’s in both Europe and the United States. Sparked by the farming revolution, the industrial revolution was an era of creation where many new inventions came about to improve both daily life and general life. It was important because it brought about many still relevant inventions such as interchangeable parts, the canning/preserving of food, and mass production by means of machine. Although the Industrial Revolution helped to improve production rates, efficiency rates, and created improved and lasting technology, it was detrimental to the health of the workers, destroyed the domestic industries, and brought faulty buildings and poor sanitation habits. While others were able to enjoy the products produced in factories, those who toiled over the machines to create such products suffered many health complications as a result.
By 1780’s, the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain began to further accelerate as machinery advancements allowed factories and businesses to produce more at a cheaper and faster rate. Cites such as Manchester, were greatly affected and became vast areas constructed of canals, railroads, and areas of development. Poor living and working conditions along side a dismal city were issues caused by the industrial growth of Manchester; as the course of the 19th century continued reforms were imposed to resolve these issues. Fast and cheap production produced extensive work hours for labors with quite the atrocious atmosphere. “If you visit a factory, it is easy to see that the comfort and welfare of the workers have never entered the builder's
The Industrial Revolution was one of the most drastic changes in society, economy, and overall life throughout Great Britain. By the 1780’s, the British Industrial Revolution began to truly accelerate after people realized they had access to resources such as coal and iron. The people of England used these resources to create machines, such as the Steam Engine. Not only did these new inventions make England wealthy, but transportation and the quality of clothing also improved, along with several other issues. Yet, although so much change was in occurrence, it was not all positive.
The workers had bad conditions in the factories. According to document 1 workers in factories had to work from 5AM to 9PM with a 40 minute lunch break and some of them started at young ages. Some entire families had to work to buy food which meant kids also had to work. Kids had less than 8 hours break which meant they didn’t get enough sleep even if they fell asleep right as they get home from work. Even worse, they spent the 16 hours every day in dangerous conditions.
In a matter of years, the country of England transformed from agricultural industries to factory industries. This transformation was a result of the Industrial Revolution, which began around 1800. The industrialization of England led England to become more powerful than other nations because of its advantage in industry. However, the Industrial Revolution had some negative impacts on the people of England. For one, cities with booming populations faced problems in providing healthy living conditions for laborers.
The Industrial Revolution occurred during the 1700’s in England. It began within the textile industry. Prior to the Revolution, many workers wove textiles by hand. They didn’t have any machines to make the process faster. When the Industrial Revolution began, machines were being built that did the job for them, and did it quicker.
According to Document 1, factory workers usually worked between 11 to 13 hours per day and only received minimal breaks. Also, the author states that two of his sisters became crippled due to them working in the factories in poor conditions. Also, he states that other men he worked with had stunted growth in limbs. This shows that factory jobs had bad working conditions for their employees and employees weren’t provided with any health care benefits, which resulted in many employees having health complications. Also, most employees were required to work over-hours, but weren’t paid for this time.
The Industrial Revolution was a period that saw the rapid development of industry in Britain between the late 1700s and early 1800s. The revolution then began it’s spread to America which became known as the second Industrial Revolution between 1820 and 1870. The revolution was seen as mass production of manufactured goods, the growth of factories, the increased use of steamships and railroads, and the positive effect on the social and economic conditions of the society. While this was occurring, there was a rapid increase in employment opportunities due to many factories needing employees to operate them, which lead to the innovation of new products. Some of the innovations produced during the revolution were the telephone, X-Ray, light bulb,
The Industrial Revolution occurred England for many reason, but mainly because of the geography, and improvement to technology. The Industrial revolution began in England because of its geography, improvements to farming, and improvements to textile making machines. England was set up to become industrial from the start because of its geography. There was coal and iron all around the country (Doc 1). This made production much easier for factory owners, as coal was needed for power, and iron was needed to make machines.
Workers in industrial factories were treated harshly. They suffered physically and mentally, as they were born into a position of working young without a steady supply of food. According to Flora Tristan’s journal, workers had more needs than just food. Workers lived miserably, with a lack of “clothing, bed, furniture, fuel… they live suspended between an insufficiency of food, and an excess of strong drink” (Document 4). Without basic necessities, a fulfilling life was nearly impossible.

According to the middle and upper classes, labourers lived and worked in tolerable conditions. According to Document 2, factory villages were in good condition and its inhabitants looked healthy and happy.
