The American industrial revolution took place from the late 1800s into the 1900s. An industrial revolution is a boom in industry and manufacturing. It requires a workforce, leaders, and most importantly natural resources like coal, steel, gold, silver and lumber. Coal was a valuable resource needed to power factories and transportation like the transcontinental railroad that spanned across the US. After the transcontinental railroad was built in 1869, more coal was found in the west that could be mined and then transported to the factories in the east. This led to the increase in material production and made manufacturing easier and cheaper. However, when coal is burned it gives off pollution so an increase in coal usage also impacted the environment. …show more content…
The workers had bad conditions in the factories. According to document 1 workers in factories had to work from 5AM to 9PM with a 40 minute lunch break and some of them started at young ages. Some entire families had to work to buy food which meant kids also had to work. Kids had less than 8 hours break which meant they didn’t get enough sleep even if they fell asleep right as they get home from work. Even worse, they spent the 16 hours every day in dangerous conditions. As seen in document 4 people in the factories had to work near machines that were not covered so people could get caught in them and die or get cut and die from infection. The problem is that they can’t even get food without working so these terrible conditions are still better than not working. With these unfair conditions the workers can try to resist. The image in document 6 shows a group of people picketing for an 8 hour workday. Even if the bosses don’t listen they can get public support to boycott the product until better conditions. However, the factory owners had ways to keep workers in bad conditions. They forced them to sign yellow dog contracts which prevented them from joining unions and …show more content…
The industrial revolution increased steel production which allowed the US to make a profit from trading and use the steel to improve transportation, farming and buildings. Industrial cities had many factories that burned coal which caused air pollution and increased steel production led to increased coal usage. Workers in the factories had dangerous, long work hours that they couldn’t protest. The industrial revolution had a large impact on working conditions at the time. Workers had to sign a yellow dog contract which prevented them from protesting unfair treatment and limited their freedom of speech. They workers would also be replaced by other workers who would work for less money and not protest like the Chinese. This relates to the 2017 issue of free speech in work. During the pledge of allegiance players in the NFL sit to support black lives matter and protest the unfair treatment or racism against black people. This is similar because they can be kicked off the team for protesting unfair treatment. If they get kicked off they can be replaced by other people who do not protest the anthem which is similar to how the workers could get replaced for protesting. If the factory owners changed and gave the workers better conditions it would cost them money. If the NFL lets them protest then people will boycott the NFL and stop watching them and the NFL loses money. of sitting the players are a representation of the nfl so
As the eighteenth century roared into existence, a rapidly growing Great Britain was faced with both an exponential commercial and population boom that was unprecedented. It is during this brief one hundred years that the nation, as well as the rest of the world, would be forever changed due to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. While the Industrial Revolution was liberating in the sense that it gave more occupational choices , as well as the opportunity to move up the rungs of the social ladder through relocation and financial gains, it also brought regulations that had to be put in place. As commerce and trade began to expand, both domestically and abroad through colonial outposts, taxation also saw a parallel increase to not only
The people worked dangerous jobs to provide for themselves and family with little pay. Children were even working in dangerous factories and constructions barely little to no pay. Workers would try to go on strike,
Undocumented immigrants across the country are treated unfairly by their employers purely because of their lack of citizenship. Employers are essentially
The factories were also not heated or cooled so the workers would get very hot or very cold. Back then there were no laws to protect the lives of the workers and most of the time the factory owners cared meore about the making of money than the employies which also didn’t help with the saftey issues. There were
The Industrial Revolution was a time of exponential growth in factories and agriculture through mechanization. Great Britain was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, beginning in the late 1700s till the mid-1800s. The mechanization of farming made growing crops more effective and efficient. Therefore fewer people were needed in agriculture and were forced into urbanization to find work. Cities population drastically increased during the revolution due to the immigration of rural workers.
Often times, six or more people were living together in one room, making it easy to transmit disease and other sicknesses. As for the conditions of the factories, they were also crowded and unsafe, and workers were barely paid enough to live. Soon the progressive leaders and other citizens realized that people could not reasonably live and work with the conditions. “And yet, in spite of this, there would be hams found spoiled, some of them with an odor so bad that a man could hardly bear to be in the room with them” (Doc. F).
The Industrial Revolution was a period that took place from the 18th to 19th centuries by which society was moving towards a more urban society than an agrarian one. During the revolution ideas of establishing a mass economic country were huge goals for America. The 1860 through 1870s were known as the years of westward expansion. The California Gold rush of 1849 in San Francisco and the discovery of silver in Nevada promised Americans economic wealth. Although there were still economic instabilities and panics in America from 1860 through 1870, the construction of the transcontinental railroad did mark a turning point in the American Economy through the support given to monopolies and the regulation of business by the federal government.
There were several labor disturbances during the Gilded Age. A few of the most popular disturbances were the construction of new railroads, advancement in science and technology, and rise of big businesses. There were four important events that happened during the Gilded Age that was considered labor disturbances; 1877 Railroad Strike, the Haymarket Riots, the Homestead Act, and the Pullman Strike.
The Industrial Revolution was a time when the world was experiencing new inventions very often. In the late 1700s, the Industrial Revolution came to America with a man named Samuel Slater, who had memorized a design for a new technology. Slater introduced America to the textile-making industry, building America's first textile mill on Rhode Island. After this, many new inventions and processes surfaced, helping America rise to the top in global economy. This new system of manufacturing overturned America's old agricultural based economy, which means that the Industrial Revolution really was a revolution.
*Pullman Strike * The Pullman Strike was widespread by the United States railroad workers, approximately a quarter-million worker were on strike at the peak and it impacted the expedition the railroad system across the states. The strike between the American Railway Union and George Pullman changed the course of future strikes when President Grover Cleveland ordered federal troops to break up the strikers; its influenced how the federal government and the court system would handle labor issues. The labor issues during the Pullman Strike were not limited that of rights of the workers, the role of management in the workers private life, and the roles of government resolving labor conflicts. Pullman planned communities for his workers how he determined
The Industrial Revolution had many positive and negative effects of how the people felt and did with the Great depression happening in the early 1900’s. Many of the positives were because of the big booms in large cities with supply and demand. There was a huge boom in Pittsburgh due to the large steel production. There were negative effects because of all of the low working wages, the economy dropping, and the desperate needs of everyone needing money. Other negative effects were also horrible conditions in factories, really low pay, unfair working hours and some of the workers were kids between the ages of 10-16.
The Industrial Revolution had brought many positive and negative effects is the American Society. The positive effects included production of better goods at a faster rate, improvement in education system, the improved transportation system in the United States and the development of long distance communication. While the negative effects included the increase in population in urban areas, pollution and issues with the child labor. Factories were able to produce goods at a faster and a cheaper rate with the help of the advanced machines. The education system in the United States were developed as the need for engineers, accountants and other professionals increased.
The Industrial Revolution witnessed the evolution of large urban centers, such as Boston and New York City. It changed society from agrarian to mechanical, which further moved jobs to larger cities. As every coin has two sides, there are negative sides to this. Primarily, it caused severe pollution. The environment condition was bad with smokes surrounding them.
By first amendment rights, you can protest however you like, but it should not be on the job. You could lose your job, cause problems for your company, or league, and create an uproar with your clients, or viewers. The NFL is now seen as a football league that allows its players to protest our country on the job. Many Americans are very upset with the protesting because of it’s disrespect, and most people will not single out the players. They will look at the team, or the league, as a whole to blame for the protesting.
The workers were often subjected to sweltering heat in the summer and frigid conditions in the winter. But, that was not it, at the time there were no laws in place that required businesses to ensure their employees' safety, and this regularly lead to many injuries and fatalities in the workplace on a daily basis. There was not a single work place that did not have injured or mutilated employees, and this was due to the unsafe working conditions of the factories, “Let a man so much as scrape his finger pushing a truck in the pickle-rooms, and he might have a sore that would put him out of the world; all the joints in his fingers might be eaten by the acid, one by one… There were men who worked in the cooking rooms… in these rooms the germs of tuberculosis might live for two years, but the supply was renewed every hour.” (109).
