England’s first phase of canal building during the 1700s was crucial for industrialization. Canals made factories cost effective. Factories could then be built anywhere with materials easily shipped to that factor, utilize the steam engine to efficiently produce the product, and transport that products to market just easily. Transportation made mass production cost-effective and widened the market from the local to the national.

The 17th and 18th centuries marked a period of revolutions that would be perceived as one of the most successful human advancement eras known in modern history. Forty-thousand people were left dead in the streets of Paris in the early 1800s during the French Revolution, while almost thirty-five thousand people a year perished in factories as an outcome of the Industrial Revolution. During the French Revolution, low-income civilians took to the streets causing uprisings as government-controlled prices were shifted to higher, less affordable prices. However, the revolution did have successes as it helped the nation get rid of its monarchy and created civil laws that benefited the middle and lower classes.

The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain because of its geographical qualities, new change within their social structure, and economical concepts formed at the time. I will be discussing how Great Britain's many rivers, accessibility to trading with neighboring countries, and multiple territories helped them begin the revolution. As well as, how the addition of one social class, and their big divide between classes influenced the beginning of industrialization. Lastly, I will talk about how economical concepts like mercantilism, capitalism, and communism sparked this new era of the world. So in other words, there are many reasons as to why the Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain.

As stated by the publication in 1831, The Working Man’s Companion subtitled The Results of Machinery, Namely Cheap Production and Increased Employment, “You are surrounded… with an infinite number of comforts and conveniences which had no existence two or three centuries ago and those comforts are not used only by a few, but are within the reach of almost all men” (Document 9). Before the Industrial Revolution, humans were provided with only the simplest ways of life, but had advanced so much further with the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. Although life was difficult and unpleasant as the Industrial Revolution first commenced due to child labor and bad working conditions, unions eventually came into place to protect the workers and improve society to a greater degree. “(Before the Industrial Revolution), one person doing all five required steps in manufacturing a product can make one unit, (but during the Industrial Revolution), five people, each specializing in one of the five steps, can make ten units in the same time” (Document 4). First of all, because products were manufactured faster, prices were lowered and productivity increased.

By 1780’s, the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain began to further accelerate as machinery advancements allowed factories and businesses to produce more at a cheaper and faster rate. Cites such as Manchester, were greatly affected and became vast areas constructed of canals, railroads, and areas of development. Poor living and working conditions along side a dismal city were issues caused by the industrial growth of Manchester; as the course of the 19th century continued reforms were imposed to resolve these issues. The new factory system allowed products to be more widely available to the public. Another positive affect of the Industrial Revolution was how there were many more jobs available within society.

The industrial revolution caused a massive influx of farm workers into urban cities, their farms having been modernized by the seed drill, they came looking for work. mainly unskilled and semi-skilled labor like the textile industry or coal mining industry. After, workers began to demand a higher working condition and higher living condition. People began advocating government reform on things like work hours and child labor, forming things like unions. Some supporters of more radical ideas advocated gender equality and electoral equality, saying that was vital to better life in the working class.

Before the industrial revolution, most of the people worked on farms. The US economy was an agricultural economy, meaning that the main industry in America was farming. Before the industrial revolution, only about 10% of the population lived in cities. Most of the people who lived in the countryside spent most of their days farming, and would sell extra food at the market. These people also made most of their own clothes, furniture, and tools from raw materials (Industrial Revolution World Book).

The Industrial Revolution was a time when many different transitions in the world with the production of goods, and machines, and the rights of people were being created and challenged. During this time, many issues with the law and the safety of the people were rising and getting worse. The Industrial Revolution had taken many steps to address these issues through different testimonies, pointing out the negative aspects of the working class, and the Factory Act of 1833. During the Industrial Revolution, the owners of the factories cared about the means of production way more than the health and safety of the workers and children.

The Industrial Revolution was a drastic time for anyone who was living during it. It was a hard time for those who had to live during it, or work through it. The Industrial Revolution was from the eighteenth to nineteenth century, and it started in England. The horrific living conditions were unbearable, and inhuman. Then, there was substandard working conditions, the rates of workers dying were unfortunately high.

The mechanical upheaval and its consequences for individuals changes. We discovered that modern generation expanded massively, conveying riches and influence to Great Britain all through the nineteenth century. Yet, we presently can't seem to investigate the impacts of industrialization on society, on the day by day living and the working states of everyday citizens. This hard work allowed rural villagers to sustain themselves while living an average life, but the villages they lived in soon grew to become large towns and cities, and the conditions that the working class then had to face got a little out of hand. An average factory day consisted of fourteen hours of tedious and sometimes painful work, with just one hour at midday for a short rest. Those who wished to rest outside of break time would be beaten, causing everyone else in the factory to work in fear (“Sadler”).
