Now this is the Arête part of Odysseus we see. He stabs the monster’s eyes with no fear and no trouble and still Odysseus manages to escape.

An epic hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to endure overwhelming obstacles. In Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, three heros named Perseus, Theseus, and Hercules exhibit different traits that affect their journey in a positive or negative way. Perseus receives supernatural help, Theseus displays incredible strength, and Hercules has a fatal flaw that will end tragically, these qualities are what classify each as an epic hero.

In the epic poem, The Odyssey, the hero Odysseus shows many heroic traits, but the most important trait is restraint. The first episode when Odysseus shows restraint is when they land of the land of the lotus eaters. Odysseus could have stayed there and got super high and addicted and been happy on lotus for the rest of forever, but instead he got his men and he went back to his ship because he knew that he had a job to do. He had to have a lot of restraint to stop from trying out the lotus.

An Epic Hero is a character who’s legendary or heroic actions are central to his culture, race or nation. Beowulf and Odysseus both share some of the seven hero traits; for example being superhuman, fighting monsters and going on a quest. They do not exhibit the exact same traits or in the same way, for example the intervention of the divine world, but they both demonstrate the qualities of an Epic Hero. Both Beowulf and Odysseus prove they are superhuman. Beowulf is able to take down Grendel and Grendel’s mother.

This quote is important because it shows Odysseus being clever when he told Polyphemus his name was Nohbdy. This quote illustrates Odysseus being a good leader by using his cleverness and not telling Polyphemus his real name to protect his men and himself. Also, in the quote, “I drew on all my wits, and ran through tactics, reasoning as a man will for dear life, until a trick came-and it pleased me well. In the beginning of the book Odysseus is impulsive and arrogant. After Odysseus blinds and defeats the Cyclops, he cannot contain himself. Out of pure impulsiveness and the inability to be humble, Odysseus yells out to the Cyclops, “If any man on the face of the earth should ask you/ who blinded you, shamed you do so–say Odysseus,/raider of cities, he gouged out your eye,/Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca!” (Homer 9.556-562). Odysseus is so impulsive he has to scream out his name to the gods and the Cyclops.

Odysseus fits the definition of an epic hero because he is quick thinking, strong and courageous. Odysseus is one quick thinking individual. He has gotten him and his crew out some some sticky situations with his clever plans. One of these plans were how to get away from Polyphemus, a cyclops who was the son of Poseidon.

This is shown when Odysseus and his men are in the lair of the Kyklopes, Polyphemos; through Odysseus’ plan they make Polyphemos drunk, and Odysseus wisely repeats that “My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy.” (Page 156, lines 397-399). This is presented as an intelligent and wise move as after Odysseus blinds Polyphemos, out of rage, Polyphemos states that “Nohbdy” has made him blind, which makes the other Kyklopes think he’s crazy. Odysseus’ wisdom enabled him to save his crew and himself, which establishes him as an epic hero. In the same fashion this wisdom is displayed when Odysseus disguised as a beggar begins to speak to his wife Penelope to see if she is still loyal to “Odysseus”.

Odysseus embodies the traits of an epic hero because he is a great warrior, is a noble birth, does good deeds, faces evil, has humility, traveled many places, and is a national hero. First, Ody shows he is an epic hero through his noble birth. He was born to be the King of Ithaca, loved by all. This showed he was an epic hero because he was not a commoner, but had a high place in society. Along with being the King of Ithaca, Ody was a great warrior in the Battle of Troy.
