An epic hero is a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. Edward Bloom is a fantastic example of this in Big Fish, a Daniel Wallace novel. The book begins where Edward is dying.
Through larger than life stories about his heroic journeys, he teaches his son about life. In this novel, the author depicts Edward as a hero by giving him attractive attributes. Edward Bloom portrays an epic hero when he travels the world in Big Fish. His life begins in Ashland, but after his childhood, he knows he needs to leave to pursue other opportunities. He stays true to himself by saving the girl in the river from a snake. The author notes that Edward “risked his own life to do it” pg. 26 when speaking of Edward’s rescue of the girl. Even though the men said that they would “take one of his eyes as recompense” pg 83 if he failed to return the eye, Edward boldly carries out this task. An epic hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to endure overwhelming obstacles. In Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, three heros named Perseus, Theseus, and Hercules exhibit different traits that affect their journey in a positive or negative way. Perseus receives supernatural help, Theseus displays incredible strength, and Hercules has a fatal flaw that will end tragically, these qualities are what classify each as an epic hero.
As a young child, Will be leaves all the tales his father tells him, however as he grows older and becomes aware that they are only fables, his outlook on life becomes harsher as he realizes how little he really knows about his father. Will expresses this to his father when he says, “dad, I have no idea who you are because you have never told me a single fact.” This shows how Will’s outlook on life passes from a childish rosy perspective to mature greyer view, as his father's stories become a shattered illusion and Will’s childlike innocence is lost. This characteristic is also seen within Edward’s stories. When on his way to the city, Edward comes across the beautiful, almost magical town of Spectre.

He then admits to his friend in chapter 3 that he is going to take advantage of the system, which he thinks of as “a special-education scam”. This is because he believes that special education students have it easy and don’t have to put in much effort to be successful in school. Towards the middle of the story, he starts to feel guilty about what he is doing and the assumptions he has made about special educational kids. An example of this is in chapter 10 when Elizabeth is offended by Edward and explains to him “being in special education doesn’t mean you’re not smart”. At the end of the story, Edward understands what it takes to achieve success and he also has a better understanding and respect for people with learning disabilities.
Edward again tries the convince Bella that he's dangerous, that she should stay away from him. Especially because he is drawn by her scent that is too desirable and may not be able to resist her. But she's stubborn and doesn’t find Edward to be scary. She cannot stay away, though, because she has fallen in love with him. Likewise, he is too much in love to push her away, even for her own good.
