If you were to think about a man with great abilities like being strong, courageous and intelligent, you could think of people you personally or like me, you could think of someone such as Odysseus. Odysseus fits the definition of an epic hero because he is quick thinking, strong and courageous. Odysseus is one quick thinking individual. He has gotten him and his crew out some some sticky situations with his clever plans. One of these plans were how to get away from Polyphemus, a cyclops who was the son of Poseidon. Odysseus and his men had gotten stuck in Polyphemus’s cave with no way out and unluckily for them, this cyclops liked to snack on men. Odysseus needed to think of a way to get them out of there and fast before they all became lunch to Polyphemus. Odysseus’s plan was to offer him wine and to get on his good side before he had gotten drowsy and went to bed. After the cyclops had fallen asleep, Odysseus started putting his plan into action. He had taken the trunk of an olive tree and started carving away at the edges to make a spear shape. After the spear was made Odysseus and his men had put the giant wooden spear into fire to hear it up to make it even more …show more content…
An example shining his courage is when him and his men had to go past Scylla when he knew any of them could die and he was also putting himself in danger. Another example is when he chose to be tied up for the passing of the Sirens. This was a courageous act because no other mortal man had been able to do that and make it out alive. One last example is When he came home to all of the suitors in his house. This is courageous because the suitors only cared about getting Penelope and if they cared so much about that why would they want Odysseus to come home to ruin their chances? It was also courageous when him and Telemachus fought off the remaining suitors because they were both greatly
Odysseus extreme handling of the situation portrayed his anger being released. He drove the spear into Polyphemus’ eye in such a violent manner that the reader can infer that when Odysseus does not get his way, he releases his anger on the person whom offended him. At the conclusion of the episode, Odysseus sails away from the land shouting his victory to Polyphemus. In rage, Polyphemus hurls a large stone at the ship, almost crushing it and killing the entire group of men. When his men cried for him to cease, he continued to boast his victory
It took every ounce of courage in Odysseus to trust in Hermes and eat the plant. Then led out the plan to make Calypso turn his crew back. This took a lot of bravery, strength, and courage. He didn’t know what to expect but did it anyways for the sake of his crew and for their families. Another way he was brave was when he was alone in the ocean floating on a piece of ship.
Body paragraph 2: Another one of Odysseus's heroic qualities is his intelligence. During the Trojan war he comes up with eh idea to build a huge wooden horse and to hide in it so they could offer it as an offering. While him and his men were with the cyclops he offered him
In Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, the protagonist, Odysseus, portrays himself as formidable for guile in peace and war. His statement accurately portrays himself due to him often deceiving his enemies through his intelligent strategies in both times of calm, and conflict. Not only that but Odysseus is also seen as an epic hero. He displays strength, strategy, and fierce intelligence.
Imagine what it would feel like to be away from your home for 20 years and to not be able to find your way back. In this epic The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus and his 720 men are in the same situation and face many conflicts that make their journey back home a lot harder. Odysseus proves himself as an epic hero, which is someone who is almost perfect but has a few flaws to keep them from this, by continuing throughout the story to fight and lead his men back home. Odysseus is an epic hero because he’s brave, he’s smart, but he is also very conceited. My first reason why Odysseus is an epic hero is he’s brave.
When they start to sail away, Odysseus starts to taunt the Cyclops. This makes the Cyclops angry, which turns into him throwing a hill and boulder at Odysseus and his men. Odysseus’s
His actions prove that he is courageous because although he knew of the danger ahead he decided to proceed. Self discipline, just like courage, is a strength that was continuously shown by Odysseus in the selection in which he reveals himself to his son. For instance, it is stated in lines 1124-1128 of page 599, “If they make fun of me in my own courtyard, let your ribs cage up your springing heart, no matter what I suffer if they pull me by the heels or practise shots at me, to drive me out.” This quote helps one understand why Odysseus could be categorized as disciplined by illustrating a way in which Odysseus’ self-discipline was enhanced, after all, not all people would be able to control their emotions after being humiliated in their
This is true because according to the text it says, “Standing beside this piece of timber I cut off a fathom’s length, which I handed over to my men and told them to smooth it down. When they had done this, they stood and sharpened it to a point. Then I hardened it in the fire, and finally I carefully hid it under the dung. I then told my company to cast lots for the dangerous task of helping me to lift the pole and twist it in the cyclops eye when he was sound asleep.” The pieces of evidence shown here explain that Odysseus cut off a piece of the staff next to him to sharpen it, fire it, and then stab it in the cyclops eye when he was asleep.
Odysseus portrays those three heroic traits throughout his voyage home to Ithaca, which is why he is a hero. Odysseus is highly dedicated to his reputation and ego for the whole of his rocky and treacherous journey. From going up against a cyclops that is five times the size of him, to placing wax upon his crewmates’ ears to mute the singing of the Sirens, Odysseus is brave when he faces his fears and intelligent when he creates lifesaving tools from ship materials. A modern hero can be someone who saves a life or even sacrifices his or her own for someone else. Odysseus can be compared to a modern hero because he risks his own life to protect his crewmates.
