Essay On Odysseus Is An Epic Hero

Odysseus extreme handling of the situation portrayed his anger being released. He drove the spear into Polyphemus’ eye in such a violent manner that the reader can infer that when Odysseus does not get his way, he releases his anger on the person whom offended him. At the conclusion of the episode, Odysseus sails away from the land shouting his victory to Polyphemus. In rage, Polyphemus hurls a large stone at the ship, almost crushing it and killing the entire group of men. When his men cried for him to cease, he continued to boast his victory

It took every ounce of courage in Odysseus to trust in Hermes and eat the plant. Then led out the plan to make Calypso turn his crew back. This took a lot of bravery, strength, and courage. He didn’t know what to expect but did it anyways for the sake of his crew and for their families. Another way he was brave was when he was alone in the ocean floating on a piece of ship.

In Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, the protagonist, Odysseus, portrays himself as formidable for guile in peace and war. His statement accurately portrays himself due to him often deceiving his enemies through his intelligent strategies in both times of calm, and conflict. Not only that but Odysseus is also seen as an epic hero. He displays strength, strategy, and fierce intelligence.

Imagine what it would feel like to be away from your home for 20 years and to not be able to find your way back. This is true because according to the text it says, “Standing beside this piece of timber I cut off a fathom’s length, which I handed over to my men and told them to smooth it down. When they had done this, they stood and sharpened it to a point. Then I hardened it in the fire, and finally I carefully hid it under the dung. Odysseus portrays those three heroic traits throughout his voyage home to Ithaca, which is why he is a hero. Odysseus is highly dedicated to his reputation and ego for the whole of his rocky and treacherous journey. From going up against a cyclops that is five times the size of him, to placing wax upon his crewmates’ ears to mute the singing of the Sirens, Odysseus is brave when he faces his fears and intelligent when he creates lifesaving tools from ship materials. A modern hero can be someone who saves a life or even sacrifices his or her own for someone else. Odysseus can be compared to a modern hero because he risks his own life to protect his crewmates.

In the epic poem called “The Odyssey” written by a poet named Homer, there is a character named Odysseus who contains these characteristics.

Do you know any epic heroes that show heroic qualities? Some heroes that you might be thinking of would be Batman, Spider-Man, or even Thor; but those aren't the epic heroes I'm talking about. I'm talking about the real heroes the ones who don't need any powers to achieve anything. The type of hero that does not need to fly or shoot lasers out of it's eyes. One hero that would be considered an epic hero would be Odysseus; you might not know who he is, well he's a character that comes out in the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Odysseus fits the description of an epic hero because he had cleverness, exceptional knowledge, and supernatural conflict. The first reason why Odysseus fits the description of an epic hero is because he had cleverness. The first time Odysseus shows that he had cleverness was in the cyclops, Polyphemus adventure.

Well the definition of an epic hero is, “a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. ”(Dictionary.com) If that doesn’t describe Odysseus, I don’t know what does. He risks his life in many circumstances, and he’s widely admired for being the one of the reasons the trojans won the war. He is also affected by lots of events throughout his adventures.

Odysseus had his bravery, his outstanding wisdom, and his strengths even though they could also become into a weakness. These are some of the qualities that could consider a person an epic
