My definition of a discourse community is a community of people who have the same interests and they share the same goals with each other. This definition, I think it gives a good understanding of how a discourse community possibly begins. A discourse community takes place all over the world and plays a key role in communication. I believe that each and every person in the world is involved in at least one discourse community in their life, it is important to understand the definition of this term. Being a part of a discourse community is an experience that everyone should have, whether it 's a specific sports team that you participated in or watched, or an online community like twitter, face book, and pinterest. There are regulations that are not stated because the athletes are expected to know them all. Overall the individuals in the discourse community are essentially the same, sharing common interests and slight personality traits. I chose the Track and Field team as one of my discourse communities because track has played an important role in my life and I have been running track sine the ninth grade. I have been too many city championships and state championships and I have also been too the junior Olympics. While on the track team it kept my physically fit, it gave me motivation to pass my classes and made me determined to beat my time over and over again. On the track team we share similar goals in the track and field community. There are a lot of goals too set when you’re on the track team. I and my team all have personal records that we set after a race and when it’s time for the next race we set a goal to beat the last record. We also have the same goal of reaching the state and city championships. Only the best makes it too the championships and it’s our goal to get …show more content…
Without the group chat everyone may miss out on events, for example the track coach might cancel practice and some people on the track team may not be aware, so we post it in the group chat with everybody’s number in it too get that message around. We also send inspirational messages on days of the track meet too keep everyone focused. When we have breaks we usually don’t have practice over those breaks, we use the group chat too remind each other to eat healthy and stay in shape over the break. Communication is very important when you’re on any kind of team. When you communicate with your coach it helps your performance on and off the track.
The genres for the track are team meetings and scheduled practice. Track and field also has a variety of events that each athlete partakes in. The race events are sprints, and distance. While the field events are jumping and throwing. Sprints are the short distance races that consist of events like the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash and relay races like the 4x1 and 4x2, unlike the distance runner’s sprinters work on their speed and technique instead of endurance. However distance consists of longer races like the 1400 and the 800. In order to run these races you must be strong mentally and have great
Defining the political aspect and the different roles that comes along with the Gymnastics program as individuals and how each different role is important for the program to work as a unity. The different roles relies on both sides of the spectrum when it comes to the sport of the gymnasts and also the behind the scenes. Each role has a different curriculum that leads to their proper structure that created a story. From the gymnasts perspectives we learned that they have their own rules and structures. To start off from the different powers that each role has and even though they seem different, they unite that makes the Gymnastics at Arizona who they are this year.
For me, the logos, pathos and ethos perspective of joining a discourse community I had been part of, taught me a lesson about interpersonal skills, organizational systems and professionalism. My aim of this paper is to share my experience of joining Chitwan Pharmacy Student Association (CPSA) via use of rhetorical skills that we have discussed in class of English 1301.
The discourse community of St. Thomas More University Parish is a growing parish that is encouraging involvement and spiritual development. Before delving into the discourse community,
Recently, there has been a lot of interest in discourse communities. According to James Porter, "a discourse community is a group of people bound by a common interest who communicate through channels and discourse is regulated (Couzelis, Isip, Adkins 12 and Porter 38-39). John Swales, however, states that a community can only be a true discourse community if they meet six requirements: they have to share clearly stated goals; they have to use a mechanism of communication; they offer feedback and information; utilize one or more genres of text, the group uses specific lexis; and they have old members with new ones (Couzelis, Isip, Adkins 12 and Swales 471-473). Under these guidelines, Mike Rose 's mother Rosie is in a discourse community because
No matter the exact distinctions, John Swales proposes six defining characteristics of all discourse communities noting they each have publicly agreed upon set of common goals, mechanisms of intercommunication, mechanisms
We communicate in many ways, either by email, telephone, text, face to face, social media or letters and the language we use allows us to get things done, nonetheless the language and communication method in which we chose to use can vary depending on the discourse community. Much like John Swales suggests a discourse community involves a group of people who share the same common public goals, such as shared interests, rules, structure, and vocabulary. When thinking about the several discourse communities I am evolved in, which include family, coaching football, college student, and a few friends. These discourse communities have influenced me, given me insight of where I come from and tell who I am as a person. I also believe much like Swales,
Being Thrown into a Discourse Community As time passes, the human race goes through a process of automatically putting themselves into groups that we think may suit us best. Theres so called groups are portrayed as discourse communities. John Swales (1990), an analyst of written communication, claimed that “discourse communities [are] groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals”. This means that we generally go where we feel most comfortable, where others like us have the same goals and mindsets alike.
A discourse community I took part of was my High School’s Varsity Baseball Team. Sacramento High’s Baseball team was very competitive, due to the fact that it was the least favored sport at Sac High, so we were always trying to prove ourselves better than any other sport. We had to do many things in order to try and get fans to come out and watch us play. The team consisted of six-teen players and four coaches whom worked extremely hard the past four years to finally earn the title of Champions.
According to “The Concept of Discourse Community”, there are six defining characteristics of a discourse community, Having common goals, Participatory mechanism, Information exchange, Community specific genres, Highly specialized terminology, and a High level of experience in all. The discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals and there are many ways to participate but it varies based on the community like meetings, telecommunications correspondence, newsletters, and conversations. It also uses participatory mechanisms to provide information and feedback, and specific genres are unique communication forms used by a discourse community to share specialized knowledge and discuss topics relevant to their interests. In conclusion, Swales' reading defines discourse communities as cohesive groups that share a common enthusiasm and use distinct communication practices to achieve their
Mirabelli helped me decide what discourse community I want to study. Like Mirabelli, I am going to study a discourse community that I was a part of. After reading the extensive knowledge Mirabelli had on the community, I realized it aided his ethnographic study. Without prior knowledge of the community, an ethnographic study is harder to complete. I also noticed the passion Mirabelli had for the discourse community he studied.
"Running, long jump, shot put, javelin, discus, and equestrian competitions" are some of the many Olympic sports played many centuries ago. While these sports were made for entertainment purposes, they were also helpful for ancient civilizations. The Games had a religious and political significance and helped Greek historians and writers to keep track of time. These games were very important to history and to this very day The Olympics were held in honor of the Greek gods.
An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals
It can be difficult to understand what it means to be a discourse or what communities fall under that category, and that is why I feel like John Swales’ definition of a discourse community is the the one that makes the most sense and the one that almost anybody can apply to communities they are part of and determine if they are discourses or not. Even though Gee and Porter had good points regarding discourses and good arguments, one almost had to be a linguist to fully understand what they were saying. They did help Swales get his point across more clearly in some instances though. Thanks to Swales I now know for a fact that my English 1113 class is a discourse community and I achieved that by following the six rules Swales presented as necessary to be a discourse community. Gee, James P. “Literary, Discourse, and Linguistics.”
Joining a discourse community is something that we’ve all experienced, whether it's family, sports clubs or even going to church. In class we have been talking about the types of discourse communities we are apart of and sharing it with our fellow classmates. A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those goals. I feel that it is very important to be apart of a discourse community because you share ideas and thoughts upon each other to build a relationship. Everybody is apart of a discourse community throughout the world.
