Mike Rose In A Discourse Community

For me, the logos, pathos and ethos perspective of joining a discourse community I had been part of, taught me a lesson about interpersonal skills, organizational systems and professionalism. My aim of this paper is to share my experience of joining Chitwan Pharmacy Student Association (CPSA) via use of rhetorical skills that we have discussed in class of English 1301.

Everyone wants the truth and with Leonard Pitts Jr. you get it. Pitts writes for the Miami Herald daily newspaper in southern Florida. His style is very unique in all of his writings, and different from other authors. Pitts mostly focuses on the outbreak of the daily news. For instance, Don’t Lower The Bar on Education Standards is strictly states lowering the bar will not fix anything it will only decrease the standards.

A speech given in 1933 by the 32nd U.S President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, tried to persuade the citizens of the United States of America, via radio, to trust their government and to keep their values secure. This speech, which was named The First Fireside Chat, helped the citizens have faith in their government and trust them with their savings. President Roosevelt was the first president to talk to the citizens which resulted in them believing in what he was stating in his speech. He explained step by step what system the government was going to use and how it would function. The First Fireside Chat, by Franklin D. Roosevelt, was a speech spoken by a very significant man stating the country’s banking issue and their solution to the problem

We communicate in many ways, either by email, telephone, text, face to face, social media or letters and the language we use allows us to get things done, nonetheless the language and communication method in which we chose to use can vary depending on the discourse community. Much like John Swales suggests a discourse community involves a group of people who share the same common public goals, such as shared interests, rules, structure, and vocabulary. When thinking about the several discourse communities I am evolved in, which include family, coaching football, college student, and a few friends. These discourse communities have influenced me, given me insight of where I come from and tell who I am as a person. I also believe much like Swales,

In the article "The Concept of a Discourse Community" by John Swales (1990). He aimed to define the meaning of a discourse community; then he carefully deconstructs discourse community into six fundamental attributes that are important for recognizing a discourse community. Swales’ definition of a discourse community is a group that has objectives or purposes, and utilize communication to accomplish those objectives. He states that a discourse community is presented as a more practical and purposeful gathering than speech fraternity or speech group. The six essential characteristics that Swales (1990) belief to be the core of a discourse community are its goals, intercommunication, participation, genres, Lexis, and expertise.

The TED Talk by Joe Smith he talks about about a small way to reduce waste. The title of his speech is called, “How to use a paper towel” and was filmed in March 2012. In this TED Talk by Smith he talked about how to save paper towels. He wanted to clarify how much we really waste and what we can do to reduce paper towel consumption. He showed the audience a effective way to use the paper towel through a simple demonstration..

A discourse community I took part of was my High School’s Varsity Baseball Team. Sacramento High’s Baseball team was very competitive, due to the fact that it was the least favored sport at Sac High, so we were always trying to prove ourselves better than any other sport. We had to do many things in order to try and get fans to come out and watch us play. The team consisted of six-teen players and four coaches whom worked extremely hard the past four years to finally earn the title of Champions.

Mirabelli helped me decide what discourse community I want to study. Like Mirabelli, I am going to study a discourse community that I was a part of. After reading the extensive knowledge Mirabelli had on the community, I realized it aided his ethnographic study. Without prior knowledge of the community, an ethnographic study is harder to complete. I also noticed the passion Mirabelli had for the discourse community he studied.

An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals

In "Mike Rowe: Learning from Dirty Jobs." The speaker, Mike Rowe, is the host of a television series that looks into the lives of Americans who are said to have undesirable jobs. He begins the speech with a narrative about his experience in the Rocky Mountains, and how he was supposed to castrate a lamb. He continues by describing the scenario, and how he expected the process to be done as according to the humane society.

It can be difficult to understand what it means to be a discourse or what communities fall under that category, and that is why I feel like John Swales’ definition of a discourse community is the the one that makes the most sense and the one that almost anybody can apply to communities they are part of and determine if they are discourses or not. Even though Gee and Porter had good points regarding discourses and good arguments, one almost had to be a linguist to fully understand what they were saying. They did help Swales get his point across more clearly in some instances though. Thanks to Swales I now know for a fact that my English 1113 class is a discourse community and I achieved that by following the six rules Swales presented as necessary to be a discourse community.  Gee, James P. “Literary, Discourse, and Linguistics.”

Analysis of the Rhetorical Strategy used by Mike Rose in “Blue Collar Brilliance” Scrolling through social media, one would see a lot of posts from accounts called RelatableGifs2016, or SchoolMemes101. From the names of the accounts one can make an educated guess about they might post. Relatable pictures. When something is familiar it becomes more understandable, and people tend to empathize more with something if they can have a connection with it.

Throughout the novel Tuesday’s With Morrie, the author, Mitch Albom, reflects on his Tuesday meetings with his old professor, now consumed with a terminal illness, and, using many rhetorical choices, reveals “The Meaning of Life,” which they discussed profusely and divided into several categories. Topics such as Death, Emotions, Aging, Money, Culture, and more are all discussed in their weekly conferences, Morrie passing his wisdom on to one of his favor students. And Albom, writing about their talks, uses numerous rhetoric devices to discuss this wisdom. As Morrie Schwartz, dying of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), speaks with Albom, the two talk about Death.

A Rose for Emily The short story “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner describes the life of woman filled with loneliness and fanatic love. The plot depicts the protagonist in the surrounding after the death of her father. Emily refuses to accept this fact, but after a while manages to recover and create relationships with Homer Barron. Nevertheless, when she understands that chances of marriage are too miserable, Emily buys arsenic, poisons her fiance and live with the corpse till the end of her life in the room frozen in time.
