Art has been existing since the early ages of human history. Even from the age where people painted in cave walls, art is seen as ritualistic. If art is ritualistic, then there is a religious aspect in the arts. Just like what Neumann explains in his writing, “Art and Time,” art has always been numinous. There is a collective consciousness and unconsciousness in our minds that is a symbolic expression of numinous (Neumann). In every piece of art, it is basically the same story but expressed in a different way, hence there are archetypes in art. Through the arts, you can see that religion plays a role, as there is always a higher being or divinity that the art is trying to express. There are also many different stylistic elements of art that …show more content…
It somewhat looks like a different planet from outer space since there are distorted objects floating in the air. At the same time, it could also be representing the deep ocean, since there are green little worm-like objects on the bottom, that could be seaweed. There is also a shell-looking object that could possibly be represented as a home. Tanguy’s art piece could be part of what Neumann explains about the cultural canon, and how different culture has a different view of expressing something (Neumann). Tanguy could be expressing an ultimate reality in this painting in his own cultural perspective. However, just like how Neumann explains it, although it can be represented differently, all aspect of art is related and is expressing the same bigger concept. In this case, it would be the ultimate reality or higher divine being. Personally, I would say that this piece can be considered expressionism because of how distorted the figures all seem. This is because “ultimate reality appears ‘breaking the prison of our form’...it breaks to pieces the surface of our own being and that of our world” (Tillich 232). As Tillich says, in Storm- Black Landscape, it is clear that Tanguy painted everything distorted and there is no figure what is completely formed. In this art piece, Tanguy is expressing an ultimate reality beyond our own world and in distorted
Art is a true account of the activity of mind. Because consciousness is always consciousness of something, art thinks ever of the world, cannot not think of the world, could not turn its back on the world even if it wished to. This does not mean that it’s going to be honest as a mailman; it’s more likely to appear as a drag queen. The problems I mentioned earlier, as well as others not taken up, enforce complexity. Style enables us to speak, to imagine again.
Most art from this period is of a religious nature, but this is a record of history depicting secular historical events. When an artist was able to choose their subject matter, the practice of creating secular art enabled them to have more freedom, because their art no longer had
In my personal bias of the painting, I interpreted the painting as a spirit going to heaven. The painting consist of a figure of white and a ground of blue. We focus our attention at the white being presented and then following by the
Artists create their own story when painting the works of the Crusader Bible and Story of Yusuf and Zulaikha. They want certain aspects of the story to be heard louder than others. Both artists use color and lines to define and highlight many aspects of the painting. Symbols and structure are also important in these pieces because they give a greater meaning to the story as a whole. The way the artists portray their scenes can have many different meanings depending on the person viewing it.
This type of art is occasionally hard to recognize as art often hides the meaning or representation to quick glances. Even art that does not represent a thing can often represent ideas or feelings. A great example of this is Gray Night Phenomenon by Alma Woodsey Thomas. This work of art is not representing any particular thing, but instead reflects the mood that is associated with the artist during a gray night (Frank 11-12). Since the art does not resemble any particular object, it falls under the classification of nonrepresentational
I believe, the purpose of this artwork is to make us think, what are we as species doing to cause the world around us to change so drastically? Two art elements that was demonstrated are texture and shape. The texture was described as smooth and ridged, the shape was three-dimensional. These are pieces are informing us about how the world is changing around us.
Religious expression through a form of art and its process of creation provides mankind with aesthetic enjoyment, a means of communication, and a show of devotion to one’s faith. Art has been associated with religion since prehistoric times. Paintings created of past events can help elicit a feeling of devotion to one’s art and faith that can be lost over time. Art throughout the ages has become a powerful voice for the expression of religious beliefs. When it comes to the art of Christian Europeans and Asia’s Buddhism, both share narrow perspectives when it comes to their subject matter.
Glutton-Brock begins his book by stating that the popular subject of discussion, what is art. He states “everyone now is thinking or talking about the nature of art and aesthetic experience.” The nature of art and of beauty is confusing while also exciting. The problem about defining the nature of art and defining art in an atheistic sense makes it hard to pinpoint where the problem lies. The only clear assessment about art is in the past was that if reflected what was happening during that era.
The attention to detail once again plays a large role in Venus. At first glance it is a contemporary piece that seems calming to the eye, but in reality, it is an eye-opening view into our society’s consumerism. The closer you get, lots and lots of colorful bags create this piece. The women in the middle is another intriguing add on to the piece. Where she is in the middle of the, so our eyes are first drawn to her, and then to the others surrounding her.
The brilliance of the art isn’t in how magnificent it looks but more so in how the distorted buildings and objects make us challenge our own preconceived perception of reality. This was a huge theme in the movie as we realize at the end of the film that Francis is a crazy man and the entire frame was of his delusion with reality accusing Dr. Caligari to be a murderer when in fact he was the Insane Asylums Chief Medical Director of which Francis was a patient. This twist at the end of the film was meant to express that we are all biased to believe one perspective of reality (as we believed Francis until we discovered the truth), and that there are so many interpretation of reality we don’t appreciate or acknowledge. The expressionism cinema was meant as a rejection of reality/natural aesthetic. It’s aim was to defamiliarise the conventional vision and constructions we allow ourselves to adopt
Art is the mirror of any culture and its worldly views. The art of Muslim world mirrors its social values and uncovers the way Muslims see the spiritual domain and the universe. Muslims all over the world embrace the identical system of belief and each one of them is well familiar with the spiritual connection regardless of nationwide, racial differences or conflicts. They consider themselves to be Muslim as a matter of paramount importance. This strong sense of identity and stability inclined en route for a high level of societal and richest artistic traditionalism.
The connection of art and humanity is also mention by Journal For Spiritual &Consciousness Studies, saying that "Aesthetics, the creation and appreciation of beauty that allows us to express our most positive emotions, is a component of the human psyche that is essential for most of us"(241 Jones). Aesthetics, as an ability of
Van Gogh painted this piece in 1889 while he was in Saint Rémy seeking treatment in a mental asylum. Interestingly enough, he painted this piece from his memory and it was supposed to have been based on a constellation arrangement he had seen earlier on in the night sky of Provence. Starry Night is perhaps one of his most famous and yet most elusive works. The first thing that I noticed was the overwhelming night sky, which takes up most of the background.
The superb use of symbolism in this painting has added complexity to the painting that contains social criticism on politics, on politician, and on culture, resulting in different interpretations from different people. It is also because of this complexity and layering of meanings that makes this painting ever more interesting and much more than what meets the
The topic I would like to introduce is Surrealism/ Surrealistic/ Surreal imagery and the significance of its movement and how it influenced many artist all over the globe in the past and still is today. My understanding of this style of art is basically having something out of this world but juxtaposed. Fantasy like objects, effects, perhaps hallucinatory quality of a dream or simply just something unreal.
