The Bayeux Tapestry

There are many different unique types of art that can all have a unique story to tell. In Meta Warrick Fuller’s painting called Talking Skulls. This image creates a vivid image of black women struggling to make any money at all and are in the worst of all jobs. This relates to the spark of the creation of the renaissance because it showed the struggle that black women had to overcome when living in the southern and they wanted a new life. But not just women had a struggle economically, even men did too.

Religion. Most, if not all art from that time had to do with God. There was either a hidden meaning about God, or the focus was just there. But during the Renaissance, all that changed. People began to view art in different ways.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind opens with views of a tapestry to provide backstory for the viewer to understand the course of events leading up to the film, such as the prophecy that is fulfilled at the end of the film. The tapestry is a creative way for the film to inform the viewer of the story of how the world became polluted and changed to appear as it does when the characters of the film are introduced. The 231 foot-long Bayeux Tapestry is a work of propaganda. The first evidence of this can be gleaned from looking at whose perspective is used in the work. The Normans, those from Normandy, created the tapestry, and their representative to the throne William, Duke of Normandy, eventually won the throne. Another way one can see the tapestry’s bias is how they speak of the opposing armies. For example, it describes Harold Hardrada as forcing his army into a hurried march after they were already exhausted from battle.

During the 16th and 17th century areas that were forbidden before began to change. These were areas were humans were only entitled to know what God wanted to reveal, otherwise they were inaccessible or forbidden. The limits on the knowledge humans were able to possess became more accessible during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Reformation shows the decline of the Catholic Church and the rise of questioning authority leading to the Scientific Revolution. The Scientific Revolution showed that observations and conclusions became an acceptable source of knowledge and truth, where it had been less so in earlier times.

What exactly was the Renaissance? Well I’m glad you asked, the Renaissance was technically a ‘’rebirth’’ or ‘’revival’’ of art and literature, as some people would describe it as, and it had started in Europe around the year of 1400 and had lasted until about the 1700s. The Renaissance was a time of intellectual excitement, when art and literature blossomed and groundbreaking scientific advances were being made. During this period of time large parts of scientific and cultural advances were beginning to develop, and people were beginning to see themselves in a new way. The Renaissance changed man’s view of man in at least four areas: Art, Astronomy, Literature, and last but not least Human Anatomy.

The content shows how Jesus was so calm at this supper, even though he knew that he would shortly be crucified after this supper and that one of his disciples would betray him. I believe this a representational art because it shows real life of how Jesus was sitting at the table eating with is disciples. The art work was a visual artwork for showing how Jesus was close and put his beliefs with the disciples and how he was interacting with them. In the painting Jesus was foretelling how Peter would deny knowing Jesus. In this art work, it was considered the first work of High Renaissance art due to its high level of harmony.

A new divide in art and religion occurred during the 17th century. The Reformation occurred and caused a major divide between Protestants and Catholics. In northern Europe, Protestantism took root, especially in the city of Amsterdam. In southern Europe, Catholicism stood fast, especially in Rome. In this paper I will argue that Amsterdam and Rome developed unique political and religious environments that created two different painting styles within the Baroque period.

The Lamentation vs The Deposition Art is a practice that is constantly evolving around the world. Art practices during the Renaissance in Italy and in Northern Europe depict similar themes, but artists express their understanding of narratives differently. Giotto di Bondone, an artist during the Renaissance in Italy, and Rogier van der Weyden, an artist during the Renaissance in Northern Europe, depict the crucifixion of Christ in two similar, yet distinct manners. Giotto created The Lamentation in 1305 and van der Weyden created The Deposition in 1435. The strategies each artist uses in their work highlight the important factors that influenced artists in each region.

From the medieval time period to the Romanesque time period many wars were fought in Europe. One of those battles that is very important in the history of Europe is the Battle of Hastings. In this article called, The Bayeux Tapestry, details the importance of the embroidery which details a number of scenes from the battle. The material that was used to create the tapestry was linen and the stitching that was used in order to achieve it was stem and laid-and-couched stitching. In addition, the tapestry is made from a variety of colors and the figures and animals range from horses to dogs and even mythical beasts as well.
