Italian Renaissance Art Analysis

One way paintings demonstrate this is the difference between the Mona Lisa and Madonna Enthroned Between Two Angels. The older painting, Madonna Enthroned Between Two Angles, is unrealistic and has rather depressing dark colors. While the Renaissance painting, the Mona Lisa, is not only much more realistic, but also a lot more cheerful, brighter feel, and became a true masterpiece (Doc A). In the paintings, the fact the Renaissance painting is brighter, more realistic and a famous masterpiece, shows that the Renaissance changed the art style into a unique, amazing representation that changed the entire future of art. The paintings from the Renaissance showed that people saw each other differently than before( Doc A).

Religion. Most, if not all art from that time had to do with God. There was either a hidden meaning about God, or the focus was just there. But during the Renaissance, all that changed. People began to view art in different ways.

This artist makes it clear that this is a religious event and not one of the natural humanistic events like a regular family dinner. Document 4, involving the second portrayal of “the last supper” was created exactly 100 years later. Although Leonardo’s version is also showing the same event, he manages to leave out the clear religious parts from the first painting and incorporates the use of linear perspective therefore making the viewer feel as if they were there being involved in the figures conversations. In the time of the Middle Ages, they focused on the religious value of art, “The [clearest] evidence of the break with medieval culture comes from the visual arts.” (DocA) a popular painting of this time by Duccio Di Bouninsegna’s shows The Mother Mary with the baby Jesus on her lap. This painting was two-dimensional and had very little creativity, the painting mostly didn’t make people feel anything only had religious value. While during the Renaissance they focused on making you feel stronger feelings “[It] was the essence of the Renaissance .... One begins to know the names of the artists ... feel stronger emotions in the subjects ... ... see well-defined landscapes, natural folds in drapery, and three-dimensional figures” (Doc A).

DBQ “What a piece of work is man!” (Doc. B). After the middle ages, and after the Black plague, and fighting had begun to die down, Europe had started a new era. The Renaissance, people had begun to look up to the sky and began to think about the world around them. People began to question authority, and look at the things around them, and make new resources.

Humanism also played a part in the arts, since most art was influenced by the art of the Greeks and Romans. Artists wanted to revive the techniques and styles from those cultures. You can also see the difference between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in artwork. In Leonardo Da’ Vinci’s 1490 painting The Vitruvian Man he depicts a sketch like picture of the male anatomy in motion. (Document 6)

Neither side is better or worse, just different, so how could these two paintings be similar? As previously mentioned, these pieces undoubtably

As expressed in Document A, from Theodore Rabb’s Basic Books, The Last Days of the Renaissance & The March to Modernity, “The clearest evidence of the break with medieval culture comes from the visual arts”. The Middle Ages had an emphasis on religious figures and symbolism. The two images contained Document A included: Madonna Enthroned Between two Angels by Duccio di Buonisegna from the late 13th century as well as Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, from the early 16th century; upon further observation the conclusion can be made that not only was the art from the Middle Ages focused mostly on religious subject, but it also had two-dimensional lifeless figures and drab colors, as expressed in the painting. This great contrast is clear because the Renaissance painting is the complete opposite, possessing realistic figures which were true to form and three dimensional, vibrant landscapes, with a focus on the individual. As Rabb put it, “the new artistic styles would echo broader movements and interests of the new age.”

In Document A, there are two paintings; one from the Middle Ages and one from the Renaissance. The first image by Duccio di Buoninsegna depicts Mary holding a baby Jesus in her arms. The second painting by Leonardo da Vinci displays a famous painting by the Mona Lisa, which is a woman standing in front of a fairly bland background. The Mona Lisa’s bland background makes you focus more on the person and her emotion rather than a very religious and holy background that has almost no emotion involved in it. Also, Document B presents two quotes that oppose each other in many ways.

The painting appears to have levels of designs on both side of Saint Francis, giving impression of a library. This indicated to me and others that the teaching of religion is central to all group and class. Saint Francis is the main focus and the details shows his work during at time. (Finkelstien) Furthermore, the colors and details on the Saint Francis Altarpiece is aesthetically pleasing.

Madonna and child are amongst the most popular yet controversial topics in the Christian art. Most of the pieces of art done on this topic usually have Mary and Jesus either surrounded by angels or saints who pay respect to them. It is an important figure in Catholicism as it reminds the believers about their faith. Both the two artworks were done during the Renaissance period with Madonna and child with the two angels being done around 1465 while Madonna and child with the saints being done around 1505.

Also, both of these works lack any source of color as well besides grayscale. Neither of these works focus on more than just the face of the woman in detail, the main focus in both images seems to be the woman the artist choose. These women also seem to have very similar expressions on their faces; innocent and unamused but rather thoughtful. Both of these artists created beautiful renderings of their subjects, neither are unappealing in anyway. A calm, innocent vibration seems to overcome Da Vinci’s as well as Picasso’s images even though the imagery is drawn in such a contrasting

Much like the Olympians from ancient mythology, Renaissance artists are regarded as gods. They revolutionized the art world, reviving themes and styles derived from the Ancient Greeks and Romans. The style they created completely contrasted with that of its predecessor, International Gothic. But how did this “Rebirth” come about? There are many answers to this question, but much of it lies in patriotism and civic values, especially in sculpture.

The “Mona Lisa” is the best known and most visited piece of art. It is a portrait painting done by Leonardo de Vinci. The portrait is an oil painting on a white Lombardy poplar panel. The woman in the portrait is sat upright in an armchair, with her arms folded. This painting was one of the first portraits that depicted the sitter in front of an imaginary landscape.
