Man’s Altered View of Himself What would man’s everyday life be like if the Renaissance never happened? Would we still think that the Earth is the center of the universe and our bodies are affected by the zodiac? Throughout the Renaissance, people explored many new ideas, such as religion, anatomy, literature, art, and how the solar system was arranged, all of which altered people’s view of everyman (meaning mankind). Mankind made improvements in realistic art and people who looked more real. People also learned about themselves more, in a physical sense. After some doctors decided to research the insides of people, they learned a lot about how humans work. People began to think more about religion and it was altered greatly in the process. …show more content…
Before the Renaissance, people were in the belief that the human body was under the control of the zodiac. This belief was shown in a drawing dating back to before the Renaissance with an image of the human body with a zodiac symbol indicating each part (Doc. D). The fact that there were zodiac symbols put in correspondence to body parts backs up the idea that they were believed to govern the bodies movements and use. People during the Renaissance finally figured out that they should actually look into dead bodies. They found out about muscles, organs and all sorts of other important things. This was a very important discovery for the time period that helped lead to our knowledge of the human body and modern medicine today. Proof of this important discovery is shown when there is also a diagram drawn of a person without skin standing up and there are many accurate muscles showing (Doc D).This means that they must have actually looked at bones and muscles to know where in the body they were and to even have thought that they may be there at all. Throughout the Renaissance, the idea of people’s physical traits changed drastically and lead to more knowledge of the human body, which inordinately changed people’s views of …show more content…
One way paintings demonstrate this is the difference between the Mona Lisa and Madonna Enthroned Between Two Angels. The older painting, Madonna Enthroned Between Two Angles, is unrealistic and has rather depressing dark colors. While the Renaissance painting, the Mona Lisa, is not only much more realistic, but also a lot more cheerful, brighter feel, and became a true masterpiece (Doc A). In the paintings, the fact the Renaissance painting is brighter, more realistic and a famous masterpiece, shows that the Renaissance changed the art style into a unique, amazing representation that changed the entire future of art.The paintings from the Renaissance showed that people saw each other differently than before( Doc A). People showed their knowledge of the human body because they made realistic images of people. Since the paintings show realistic bodily structure, it proves how many man had excelled in their understanding of anatomy, and their knowledge has expanded. During the Renaissance man had a much-improved insight on themselves, which is expressed in Shakespearean writing and in the writing of the play, Everyman. They call man noble, and wise( Doc B). This shows that man was gaining confidence in their abilities, as shown in Shakespeare writing when it states, “What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason!”(Document B, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare) Therefore, it
The Renaissance or “rebirth” was a period of great scientific, artistic, and cultural advancement in Europe that gave way to many groundbreaking discoveries, such as the discovery of the heliocentric solar system (Document C), the portrayal of art in three-dimensional form (Document A), the discovery of the composition of the human body (Document D), and many other revolutionary achievements that enriched the society of Europe and their awareness of the real scientific world. During this time period, people began to understand the difference between science and religion and they developed a new understanding regarding their view of their own humanhood, or in other words, there was an evolution in man’s view of man. Through the works of
The focus was shifted from God, to the value of an individual. A major art piece that showcases this is Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” Things such as the “well defined landscapes, natural folds in drapery, and three-dimensional figures” (Doc A) all support the idea that during the Renaissance, the focus was on detail and the person not on God, or religion. Humanism was also big because of its intense focus on value in the person. Something that
The shift in the art style changed the way people viewed reality. This was just because of the art and how it led to people seeing the world differently. The idea that man was capable of great accomplishment inspired many artists to pursue their studies in the arts and humanities. During the Middle Ages, people believed that only God had the power to create. The Renaissance, however, gave credit to artistic creativity and achievement.
Vesalius’s discoveries were the basis of human anatomy, he was the first to specifically and accurately explain the human body, which is crucial to current medical and anatomical understanding. Vesalius has proven Galen wrong numerous times as “Vesalius discovered that the skull’s mandible consists of bone which contradicts Galen’s predictions that the mandible was two separate bones in the head” [Source 11] and “The sternum has three parts, not seven as Galen claimed on the basis of ape dissections.” [Source 10] This indicates Vesalius was continuously trying to improve as he continuously corrected what Galen and people believed was correct.

The scientific revolution is important because it brings to light two fundamental ideas “observation and evidence”, this forced man to compare the physical traits of human forms, this brought about the differentiation between blacks and whites. According to West philosophy in collaboration with science helped bring theory to reality. Philosophers Bacon and Descartes believed that philosophy brought a new standard of knowledge and that observation and evidence were at the center of the scientific method (West pg. 52). The Renaissance or “rebirth” was a time when humans began to rise intellectually from the Middle Ages. During this rebirth, artists, scholars, physicians among other professionals began to look into the ideals of the ancient philosophers of the classical world, a time known for its high standards and human achievements. They did this to reshape their thinking. This meant that they began to deviate from the religious point of view and began to conform into a secular one. Moreover, the interest these men took in altering their way of thinking led to the ideology of Humanism.

The humanists thought that every person has respect and worth and therefore should command the respect of every other person. Being more humanistic made them more individuals, which was another movement during this time. They started to think about themselves not as a whole, but as individuals.
Which created “a prominent and powerful middle class, which now came to play a role in art patronage”(“Baroque”, 2013). As well as providing society with new insight into mankind's place in the universe, leading to “ landscape painting, in which humans are frequently portrayed as minute figures in a vast natural setting”(“Baroque”,
Christianity and Islam of the Middle Ages were not merely theologies, they were ways of life that dictated every aspect of daily living. Medicine was not immune to the effects of religion thus, Christian and Islamic theologians and medical personnel dealt with the dichotomy of their theology and their role as healers in parallel yet unique ways. To understand the interplay between religions of the Middle Ages and medical science it is necessary to examine the influences and texts that form the foundation of both the theological and the scientific aspects of culture. Pre-Islamic and pre-Christian cultures, theological texts, Greek medical foundations, and the interpretation of theology form the foundation of medical interaction with religion
Perspective is considered one of the most important aspects of Renaissance art. Artists such as Masaccio, Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael made the use of this device in many of their work. Thanks to Filippo Brunelleschi, who ‘invented’ and developed this technique called one point linear perspective. The intention of perspective in Renaissance art is to depict reality, reality being the ‘truth’. By simulating the three dimensional space on a flat surface, we in fact incorporate this element of realism into it.
