Augustus Egg’s “The Travelling Companion” portrays two young women sitting in opposite direction inside a moving train carriage. The painting is almost symmetrical as there are many similarities between the two ladies. However, there are also subtle differences between them which enforces the main themes of this painting through symbolism adding layers of meaning in its reading.
This painting was created in 1862 during the Victorian era, a time when industrialization took place, and hence having trains as a background in the painting. Although industrialization brought better income to the society, the people were dissatisfied with the government as it was moribund. The leader, Napoleon III, took a liberal stance, amnestying political exiles and reducing restrains on the press. The imperial dictatorship has been transformed into a constitutional monarchy. While some sectors of the society were in concert with Napoleon III’s reformist ideal; some were of equal concern. Another important idea in the Victorian era is the slow recognition of sexual repression and the start of liberation that opened up better opportunity for women to express themselves. 1- Talking about inspirations, I need to divide into three different categories: concept, style, and material. The idea for this series of drawings comes from human life cycle and I visualize it based on my personal surreal imagination. The human 's life cycle always start by a zygote, then the zygote becomes an embryo, after born there are two main stages, first is before adulthood when there are many conflicts and variances that shape the personality, another stage is the adulthood when the character is totally formed and all those conflicts become part of the personality. Assignment Four – The Family Group by Charles Umlauf Charles Umlauf created The Family Group sculpture in 1960. The location of the sculpture is outside of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. Its green color distinguishes the sculpture from the many other sculptures around the university and from the background of the business school. Much of the evidence in the paper will come from the structure and form of the sculpture. The sculpture depicts the wife leaning on the husband showing a traditional family structure.
In a traditional culture at the time, the female image was inferior to men in many different aspects. Women have an inferior intelligence compared to men, inferior role in society, and inferior status. Later on, women were respected more as wives and mothers. Women remained in homes, raising children, and “rescuing men’s souls and leading them to the holy paradise” (). An initial reaction to this artwork is a feeling of mourn with an explosion of emotions. At first, the artwork serves as a symbol of sorrow, despair, and melancholy.
