On June 1, 2012, David McCullough Jr. delivered a commencement speech to the graduating class of Wellesley High School. The speech was presented in Wellesley, Massachusetts among the graduates, close family, and friends. McCullough may not be a professional public speaker, but he is a well-known and respected English teacher at Wellesley High. Jay Erskine Leutze came to speak to us today about his book, Stand Up That Mountain and his experiences growing and living in the mountains of North Carolina where he was able to call Belview Mountain his very own backyard. He is basically a conservationist who made a huge effort to save and preserve what we know as much of the Appalachian wilderness that happens to be one of the most beautiful sights on the east coast. I feel as though his book showed several different messages but I believe that one of the biggest points that he added onto at the convocation was the fact that realizing who you are and realizing the importance of the world and environment and creatures around you is the only way to truly understand everything around you. In The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth, written by Alexandra Robbins, the reader is expected to connect the lack of individuality of many in high schoolers to the results of the social and biological experiments by Asch and Berns. Throughout the story, Robbins in constantly showing how high schoolers are conforming to peer expectations, despite their own personal interests. Many people see the valedictorian as the best student in the entire class or maybe just the most popular. Either way, stakes are high when appointing a single student to this position, and much controversy has been discovered as to what qualifies a student to become the one. Academics are generally the aspect that principals consider most when deciding. People have jobs, families, and other important events to take care of throughout their daily lives. Why spend time caring when there are so many things people have to get done with? According to Merriam Webster, another definition of charity is “benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity” (Merriam Webster).

In recent years, the topic of saving the Earth from Humans has shown itself in many conversations amongst the people of the public. Saving the World will be an issue we must solve in the near future because we are causing a mass extinction for animals, and we are harming and killing humans, but we can resolve it by using technology to reduce global warming and setting aside reserves. The most important thing humans must do in regards to this topic is begin to educate themselves and others on how drastic we must be in regards to it. The first major issue that must be made clear is the great peril animals are in, and what this means for the planet and humans.

As the result of my experience this semester I can conclude that this experience was a life changing experience. The way I viewed things in the past about the environment has changed. In the past I was not aware of the importance of living a more sustainable life. Also, how protecting our environment is one of the today’s most serious issues. Some of issues and information that I learned throughout this semester was the web life, food web, overpopulation, mutualism & commensalism, climate change, pollution, rainforest & sea destruction, and the extinction of many animals and plants.
