History suffers from ideological, epistemological and methodological weaknesses and the fact that historians face these limitations and problems in order to gain complete knowledge of the absolute and undeniable truth do indeed support Voltaire’s allegations.
So what is history? The most agreed upon definition is that it is merely a study of past events. However it should be noted that the past and history are two very diverse terminologies. The past has occurred. It is gone, there is no way of bringing it back. There are more than twenty five different methods from which one can choose from and that means twenty five different possibilities. How does one know the correct criteria for choosing and on what grounds does one choose? Talk of method as the road to truth is misleading. Also after historians are done with their research and have to write it down there are a couple of other factors that can influence their work like distractions, personal values and perspectives, etc. history is also ideologically constructed. This means that it is constantly being reworked and reproduced by those affected by power relationships. In the 1800s there was a German historian by the name of Leopold von Ranke who founded the field of empirical, research based history as we know it today. He said there were three kinds of history -- the actual event, the details of which are lost forever; the reconstruction of the event, which can be done only through painstaking research and through verified, accountable and measured sources; and finally the "history" that is in the books, which is put there by the people in power to promote a certain viewpoint or message and is almost always wrong. Von Ranke felt that people in authority use history as a tool, they tried to find stories of morality or ideology in the events and recorded them to accomplish a particular philosophy or achieve a desired end (nationalism, for example, or expiation for certain national sins). He believed that history should be neutral, record the facts and nothing more and that interpretation should be left to the individual. During the Enlightenment many new ideas inspired the government and the people to come together to better society. People such as John Locke, Beccaria and many others had different ideas of how to reform the government during the Enlightenment period, which lasted from 1685-1815. The ideas created by the philosophers of this time included new beliefs and new laws. This ultimately leads to new relations forming between the government and the people. The propositions proposed by the Enlightenment altered the association between government and society by uniting the ideas of the government and the people, promoting the tolerance of all religions, and giving justice to the people.
History they say is the study of past events; it is the body of knowledge about the past made known to us by historians. Whether it actually happened or they are just a made up stories written, by historians, is a fact we are yet to prove and since these events have no scientific value, its only purpose then is to educate. A popular quote says, “you can fool some people some of the time, but you can’t fool everybody all the time.” Historians and publishing companies have succeeded in modifying and manipulating history for so long, hereby giving students the wrong notion about history. If historians however fail to educate the public properly, but only modify or lie about the past, then all their historical learning is useless since it educates just them.
Our lives are based on the lies you teach. If students in the United States learned what actually happened in our history, we would be one of two things: terrified or open minded and know about whitewashing. Whitewashing is defined as the cover up of crimes, vice, or scandals to perfunctory investigation and deliberately attempting to suppress or conceal information.. The students deserve to know what really happened years ago. How come we don’t get to learn about the $5 Indians?

He first studied law to fulfil his father 's wish, but later became a well-known writer and philosopher. He lived most of his life in exile, because of his satirical tales that attack the French State, the Catholic Church, the aristocracy, and the military. For instance, the Grand Inquisitor; the Bulgarian Captain; and the arrogant Young Baron all represent the absurdity of that time.

History does not always convey the absolute truth. It offers only one side of the story. The strong and powerful voices always drown out the sounds of the weak and beaten. The winner’s word will always be taken over the loser’s. The content that lies within the textbooks was not written by the defeated.
History focuses on the study of the past as it is described in ancient documents. The facts that usually make part of history books require the participation of many historians after observations and investigations about the topics to make a consensus. Historians, based on patterns will usually have a specific point of view. These point of views usually have really crucial information that must be confirmable in order to ensure their validity, usually varying depending on the side the historian takes when writing the story. Most of the time historians are tested by the use of the Historical Method.
Although opponents of this idea claim that governments shape their countries with war because history can only change with militarism, some people say that there are some other reasons which are changing history: technological development and world economy system. The first noticeable reason for the most powerful tool of change in history is that technological development which affect every part of human life.
