At the beginning of the semester, we were given to book to read The first book being The Great Depression: A Diary by Benjamin Roth and A Short History of Reconstruction by Eric Foner. While reading them we wanted to compare the views of America's economy by comparing the arguments of the two authors mentioned, Roth and Foner. Benjamin Roth's lived through the Great Depression and his book The Great Depression: A Diary was all based on what him and his family experienced and went through during that hard time. When thinking about history in the past, I have always believed that it was straightforward. I knew that if I wanted to know something, I had to find the sources that contained the information. I had never thought about how that information came to be or why the author chose to include the information that he did. Reading “The Strange Death of Silas Deane,” helped me to see that everything is not as straightforward as it seems, and in order for you to completely have a full picture of something, you need to know all the information that is surrounding it.

This idea is explored in the memoir I Never Had It Made, by Jackie Robinson, the article “Maya Angelou Biography,” and the article “The Father of Chinese Aviation,” by Rebecca Maskell. Jackie Robinson, Maya Angelou, and Feng Ru all experienced obstacles and life-changing events that had a drastic and positive impact on their lives and society. Jackie Robinson entered unfamiliar and often hostile territory, becoming the first African American to play in the Major Leagues, changing professional baseball and his country, the United States, in the process of doing so. Robinson’s path to greatness wasn’t easy. He faced many obstacles and challenges.

He makes it very easy to understand who William Jennings Bryan was and shows us how he was accepted by society at the time. Kazin shows us how William Jennings Bryan was raised as a child and how his environment was. He also makes the connection between how his environment was and how it affected his adult life. The book helps us understand who William Jennings Bryan was before he was such a strong and influential political figure. This can also give us an idea of how others in his same position were raised.

How a man goes about dealing with his past experiences portrays not only his character, but also his true inner self. This is especially true in Edith Wharton’s novel Ethan Frome. The main character, Ethan Frome, struggles with the consequences of his decision to marry his wife Zenobia following the loss of his parents. Ethan made this disastrous decision because of a feeling of obligation from societal pressure and ancestral conservatism. Wharton controls Frome like a puppet throughout the story displaying his perpetual contentions with his mistake-ridden marriage and uses it to power the novel as a whole.

In Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome, Ethan Frome’s past contributes to the story more than any other character’s. The other main characters’ past may have been more difficult or life changing, but Ethan’s past definitely builds the story more. Ethan’s past builds his character more and dictates almost everything he does. This cannot be said for the other main characters in the story. Ethan’s farmhouse has always been home to loneliness.

The article I read was the last words of a prison inmate. He has written the letter to his mother., condoning her for his upbringing. How her actions help lead him to the life he had, and the actions he did. It was a great example of the right and wrong parents should teach their parents. As well as an outcry for education to strengthen, both the parent and the child alike.
