Ms. Velma Annette James was born December 28, 1956 in St. Louis, Missouri to William Hall and Sylvia James. Ms. James mother and father preceded her in death. She was the eldest of three brothers, Joseph James, Ralph Wright and Bradford James. Although her mother did not have any daughters, Velma found a sister in her favorite cousin, Diana Hunt Lewis Johnson. Sherrie Armstead and Sandra Tunstall who were inseparable since grade school. Velma Annette James attended Gunlach Elementary School and graduated from Beaumont High School in 1976. After High School she obtained her LPN Certificate and began her career in the Barnes Skilled Nursing Facility. She also served as a Counselor, Mentor and on the Board of Trustees at Hope House, Inc. She also served as a mentor and sponsor for men and women overcoming addictions. Among all of this, while being the mother of three loving children: Miceesha “Micki” Handley-Bellamy, Niteeka Higgins and Kenneth McClendon Jr., she was a surrogate mother to many.

Annie Jean Easley was born April 23, 1933 to Mary Melvina Hoover and Samuel Bird Easley, in Birmingham Alabama. She was raised, along with her older brother, by a single mom. Annie attended schools in Birmingham and graduated high school valedictorian of her class. Throughout high school Annie wanted to be a nurse because she thought that the only careers that were open to African American women at the time were nursing and teaching and she definitely did not want to teach so she settled on being a nurse but as she studied in high school she began thinking about becoming a pharmacist.

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published in 1961, but was unveiled almost 10 years later due to the different slave narrative structure.
