Today, you either get educated or you get stuck in a dead-end job without much prospect for the future. The gap between those with a higher education and those without one is becoming wider with advancements in technology and the growing competitiveness of the job market. There are many dangers of this gap. One such danger is the people who have a higher educations having the leisure to ignore those who are less educated. Joy Castro in her essays “Hungry” and “On Becoming Educated” discusses her life and educational journey. She was the first in her family to go to college and has a distinct view of this gap in that she can view both sides at once. In today’s world, the importance of a college diploma is more important than ever. Globalism has long since shrunk the world, and many jobs are becoming more and more automated. Good jobs are harder to get and positions are more competitive. College, however, is not cheap and many do not want to go through more school after high school. When Castro goes to college she notices most of the other student are either from an upper-class family or middle class, she realizes most do not understand her and she could not understand them very well either. Put simply, Castro’s struggle with these people was “I couldn’t relate,” (Hungry 264). After moving off campus Castro’s struggles deepened. She lived in a barrio which most of her friends did not visit. They see trouble when they look at her neighborhood instead of the life and culture she sees there. She moved between two seemingly completely separate worlds, the manicured campus and the apartment in her barrio. This situation, however, made Castro aware of both sides of the rift. One side had people learning and knowledge that Castro desperately craves and the other side had the beloved Latino culture that belonged to her. She cries out for those who have the knowledge to help those who hunger for it. Instead of forcing themselves to be one thing or another people can choose both. People, especially the academics, don’t have to conform to the preconditioned ideologies and dichotomies set up by society. They can choose both. In the writing world Castro has been told she must choose what type of work she will write creative or scholar but she cannot choose both. She thinks otherwise. In light of the choices she was asked to make, Castro claims, “It was all too reminiscent of the old divisions long demanded of us: you must think or feel, not both,” (On Becoming 271). The dichotomies of society need dismantling in order for improvement of people within that society. To do this people must be able to attain both side of the “or” they are presented with. Castro seems to choose both thinking and feeling. She tries to get both those who care to change the world and those who have the knowledge to do so together. In order to accomplish this, Joy Castro asks for everyone to compromise, meet halfway. It is necessary for both sides to respect the other side and try to accommodate for the difference. On the side of those who have not gone to a higher level of education, they must be shown the relevance and importance of the knowledge offered by the scholars. After gaining a better knowledge of Chican@/Mexican-American individuals, it is clear there is a lack of understanding towards these unique cultures and narratives in exchange for assimilating students into a larger American culture. While some students, like Mora, are able to balance both their heritage and finding success in their education endeavors, many students either fail to achieve high success or drop their culture in exchange for not only the more dominant culture, but also higher levels of success and understanding of course material. Mora admits he is a unique outlier if one was to look at Chican@/Mexican-Americans as a whole. Not only did Mora have the opportunity to attend a successful high school, but he grew up in a middle-class household with parents who found moderate success in the business world.
When it comes to certain topics, multiple interpretations can be revealed, as an argument progresses. Sometimes it may be hard to tell which side is in the right. Subsequently, opinions continuously fly back and forth between individuals who can’t seem to stop disagreeing with each other. Moreover, internal conflicts occasionally arise as well, within each individual, due to new information that develops from their personal trials. Finding a piece of literature where the reader can relate to is a great fortune.
Considering this, she doesn't have a strong foundation based on her future and dreams she would like to achieve. While in the other hand, for Victor and his family their migration journeys being in Quincy, Florida there where they are picking tomatoes. For Victor his family is the inspiration and they will always be his inspiration because he does not want to see them suffer. He knows what they have been through and is ready to change not just his life, but theirs as well. Victor is his little sisters’ role model and the one held responsible since his other sisters are still back in Mexico.
Victor M. Rios was born in Mexico. When he was two years old he immigrated with his mother to Oakland, California. He went through a tough childhood and he and his mother moved several times throughout poor neighborhoods such as West Oakland, The Fruitvale District, and Elmhurst. As a result of growing up in this kind of environments he was forced to be part of Latino East Oakland gangs. Stealing cars, selling drugs, getting into street fights and having problems with police was all he would do until he was 15 years old.

But, despite Florida’s population of more than 1 million Cubans, and their migrations’ deep ties to Florida’s history, Cuba didn’t exist to my textbooks in elementary school, which instead focused on the Western canon. In other words, those textbooks focused only on the European and North American body of work and history, that they decided is of merit (Ethnic Studies: Critique of Western Canon). One of the toughest adjustments, having been born to Mexican parents, is migrating to an unknown country where traditions and languages differ from one 's own. Though many pursue an education and strive for a better life, the purpose behind an immigrant, like myself, differs from the typical American. Immigrants strive for a life that was once impossible, going to school is not only to attain an education, but to better prove that we can also become successful regardless of our traditions and skin color. I lived in a country for over fifteen years, fearing deportation, not only losing a home, but potentially saying goodbye to a bright future. Although many feel empathy for Mexican-Americans, it is undeniably difficult to truly comprehend the immense trauma children and even adults undergo upon experiencing racism and prejudice.

The film, Lemon Grove Incident, depicts the hardships a community of Mexican Americans endured as education, a tool commonly used for upward mobility and inclusion into the dominant American society, became another form of racialization against them. In this community discourse driven by stereotypes and actions geared by academic profiling, denied Mexican Americans students from co-existing in the same school as their white peers. Members of the Lemon Grove PTA and School Board, believed that segregation of the two races would create better learning environments for both parties because the Mexican students lacked full ability of speaking the English language. In the article entitled “Finding the Bicultural Balance: Immigrant Latino Mothers Raising ‘American’ Adolescents” by Yolanda Quinones-Mayo and Patricia Dempsey, Quinones- Mayo and Dempsey discuss the barrier between immigrant mothers and their “American” adolescents because the American society teaches the adolescents to become independent from their mothers (2). The article itself presents the social work analysis of the relationship between the mother and child respectively based off the Latino culture, as well as the adaptiveness of the adolescent to American culture. Specifically, Quinones-Mayo and Dempsey argue that the strain in the relationship between immigrant mothers and their “Americanized” children is caused by American idealism.
Therein lies the irony of solidarity mixed with ideas of superiority, a principle that De La Fuente should have emphasized rather than glazing over as it is crucial to examining revolutionary Cuba. In the other portion of the chapter, De La Fuente continues with Batista’s Cuba, but in a different light.
She encourages the members of her audience to be a mentor to someone who is different from them, and who does not have the same opportunities as them (Abdel-Magied, 9:56). Everyone has the tendency to gravitate towards those similar as themselves, she acknowledges (Abdel-Magied, 10:00). But by finding someone with a completely different background than you, you can create opportunities for them that were not there before. Many times we don’t even realize that others lack the opportunities that we have (Abdel-Magied, 10:35-10:45). By making the decision to look beyond your own bias and reach out to someone, you have the potential to create more opportunities for people, and in doing so you are helping the world by creating equal

Nobody in your group has the confidence to ask the workers for help since they don’t have the knowledge of Japanese to help them.
Cuba Comparison to US Policies and Practices –Theresa Plante When it comes to a comparison of Cuba and the United States policies and practices of education, it is commendable that Cuba has such a comprehensive education of citizens given the limited amount of resources. One cannot compare Cuban and American educations without first acknowledging the differences in ideological practices. Cuba has a Communist form of government, compared to the American Democracy.
Over the last century society has taken great strides in its quest to improve quality of life. We have improved access to necessities like clean water and healthcare and ushered in social reforms that have made life more comfortable. Yet, pockets of people remain overlooked, marginalized on the fringes of society. People who live in destitution, who suffer the curse of generational poverty, lead very difficult lives. They struggle to earn a living and to feed their families.
