The book, “Into the Killing Seas,” by Michael Spradlin, is about how World War Two breaks out and two boys named Patrick and Teddy must separate from their parents for safety. They miss their parents so much that they decide to secretly hide in a crate in a ship that takes them back. A companion who helps them, named Benny, privately gives them some supplies and water. Suddenly, the ship, or Indianapolis, is torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and the ship begins to sink. The three make it out alive, but help is far and they are floating on a piece of a crate.

This work does not appeal to pathos as strongly as it does to ethos. Everyone is born into conditions that are beyond their control. This essay does not take that fact into account. This essay is also very factual, so there is not a big need to persuade someone’s appeal through emotion. Summary of the Book “Out of depths” represents the heart wrenching real story of the experience of the Isabela Knockwood in the Indian Residential School in Shubenacadie in Nova Scotia. Additionally, it involves her horrifying accounts of whatever she faced in the institutions. Isabela incorporates different accounts from other former individuals in the institution. The abuse that the kids faced is unfathomable. Worst still after going through the story, it is quite hard to understand the reason a group of individuals could have treated kids in such a horrifying and abusive way.

The filmmaker is very emotional about their thoughts and feelings how public schools should be. The purpose is to have the audience feel sympothy or (sadness) for the kids going to failing public schools and not receiving a good education. Teachers aren´t doing their jobs efficently they don´t achieve the maxium curriculum they are required to reach at the end of the school year. How is this purpose conveyed? The audience for this piece are people who are interested in Rodriguez’s childhood and education and seeing how scholarship children can become successful. The writer’s purpose is to explain why and how he became a scholarship and academically successful in a bilingual household with the family’s main focus on Spanish. This purpose is shown as the writer takes the reader on a journey through his childhood.

In Paulo Freire’s “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education” he outlines the inefficient and oppressive nature of modern education. Friere posits that modern education is of narrative manner, in that the teacher, or narrator, narrates to a listening person, the student. This flow of education is one way, from teacher to student. The teacher 's objective is to narrate to the student until the student is full of their information or put in terms of banking, deposit their knowledge in the bank, student.

Kozol’s “Fremont High School” shows that the school system is corrupt and the school is lacking in funds to help students get the proper education for college and success in their future. In the “Against Schools” article, author John Gatto describes the modern day schooling system and its flaws. He uses several rhetorical strategies in trying to prove his point. He successfully uses all three types of rhetoric in writing this article, which includes ethos, pathos, and logos. He establishes these strategies very early, and often throughout the article. He believes one issues with today’s schooling system is boredom, and that there is a distinct difference between what it means to be educated and schooled.

Being optimistic in tragic times, is a substantial challenge, but the people of Haiti find hope in each other. Author, Edwidge Danticat, portrays the idea of hope in a variety of different stories. Born in Port-au Prince, Haiti, Danticat’s background of Haiti, brings authenticity to the novel. The motif of family and friendship that thread throughs Danticat’s stories, suggests that even though people may be in times of despair, loved ones can bring a sense of hope. Hope is illuminated in “Children of the Sea”, through the unnamed boy and girl 's relationship.

Today, you either get educated or you get stuck in a dead-end job without much prospect for the future. The gap between those with a higher education and those without one is becoming wider with advancements in technology and the growing competitiveness of the job market. There are many dangers of this gap. One such danger is the people who have a higher educations having the leisure to ignore those who are less educated. The education he receives in these two places differ because of the difference between the impoverished country environment and the wealthy town environment. Marxist Criticism, specifically the Hegelian Dialectic is applicable in Bambara’s short story, “The Lesson”. Social class is predominant at the time “The Lesson” was written and the story focuses on the main character, Sylvia’s perception of her own class, the struggles that it brings and what she is then introduced to by Miss Moore. The Hegelian Dialect can be applied to this story as the transformation ensues within Sylvia upon her enlightenment of the difference in social classes. What appeared to be anger, frustration and resentment within Sylvia, undergoes a conversion into an upheaval curiosity of a newfound “culture”. Does the enlightenment occurring within Sylvia, present a new synthesis of which she uses as a platform for change?

We have no other form of income so if we are unable to pick anything to eat from the land we go without food on that day. This happens a lot and we regularly go several days without any food at all. When we do pick vegetables from the land it’s very rarely enough for the whole family to be fed so my husband
