“A group of big-city mayors released a study showing that in 2000, requests for food assistance from families increased almost 20 percent, more than at any time in the last decade. In Quindlen's essay “Schools Out for Summer” she addresses many of the food struggles happening not only in other places but right under our noses. During school months it's much less of a problem because of the students going to school and the food programs. So the question is how many kids during the summer are getting the necessary amount of food. “Fifteen million students get free or cut-rate lunches at school, and many get breakfast, too”.

She is effective in the use of persuasion as well as her superb use of real world situations. It supplies exemplary representation of hunger from different perspectives. Quindlen’s essay distinctly explains how and why it is so difficult for kids to be well fed throughout the summer months ,she includes examples that correlate to her argument as well as convincing reasons to support her claims. The main point Quindlen returns to is why it is so difficult for people to feed their children and how the children suffer.

Think of the Children in America Summer is the time when most kids enjoy their free time out of school, and for some kids, summer is the time where they’re not so lucky food-wise. Anna Quindlen, the author of the essay “School’s Out for Summer,” stated that children often were not able to receive the appropriate nutrition during summer because sometimes families do not have enough money to provide nutritious meals as they are served in school. The essay proves, with factual evidence, that, although most people tend to deny the problem, starvation occurs as well in the mighty country of America. Quindlen explained that “During the rest of the [school] year fifteen million students get free or cut-rate lunches at school... but only three million children are getting lunches though the federal summer lunch program.”

In Anna Quindlen’s essay, School’s Out for Summer, she discusses what a huge problem child hunger has become and how it affects thousands of families across the nation. Anna’s essay informed the reader of how the problem still exists, and how people are taking steps to prevent and end child hunger. Anna provides the reader with evidence from food banks and summer programs that hunger is still a major problem in the United States. “During the rest of the year fifteen million students get free or cut-rate lunches at school, and many of them get breakfast too.” Ultimately, this shows that many families across the nation cannot afford to feed their children adequate meals three times a day.

In this essay, Anna Quindlen, used many examples and scenarios to persuade the reader that, in America, child hunger does exist. Some of the first things Anna talks about in this essay is how during the school year kids will always be about to get a lunch and some even a breakfast because, this is what the school provides for the children. And only 3 million kids are getting a summer lunch program.

Jeannette took on other ways to find food, even going so far to fish food out of garbage cans. “When other girls came in and threw away their lunch bags in the garbage pails, I'd go retrieve them ... I'd return to the stall and polish off my tasty finds.” (Walls 173) Her parent’s recklessness pushes Jeannette to find food in unsanitary locations, instead of depending on others to provide her next meal for her.

At this point some of you may be thinking, why don 't these people just work themselves out of poverty, or that these people are just lazy. Well for the vast majority that just isn 't the case. Many people are born in poverty stricken homes, and their minds could have been ruined because they did not eat enough to sustain their bodies. Some people are also mentally ill, and have been left. These mentally ill people can’t take care of themselves and are often left with no one to feed or care for them.

Outsmarting Poverty Poverty is a common world-wide issue in which people lack the finances to provide basic necessities for themselves as well as their family members. This includes factors such as food, clothing, clean water, and shelter. This is a problem which happens to exist and occur in other countries as well as the United States, hence making it a world-wide issue. Some people have the belief in which those stuck in poverty should and must be given everything; whereas, others who disagree with that statement may believe that those who are stuck in poverty should learn to have a hard work ethic and be able to pull themselves out of poverty without the help of others.

In fact, a multitude of forms of poverty exists. To begin, poverty is compared to the average quality of life in a given country (Poverty: What Is It?, 1; Poverty UNESCO). This means if one does not have access to electricity or water, does not have a permanent dwelling, and is unable to lead an average life such as a middle-class person in a developed country, one lives in relative poverty. A second form of poverty is income poverty. According to UNESCO, if one’s income does not reach the federal income line of one’s country, one lives in income poverty.
