Not being able to have food, not having enough for the week, and not knowing where to get food for your starving child are all defined in what is known as “food insecurity”. According to the resources, nearly 84 % of client households with children report purchase the cheapest food available knowing that it wasn’t the healthiest option just as an effort to provide enough food for their family. On top of that, Among Feeding America, a federal program, client households with children, nearly 9 in 10 households are food insecure (“Child Hunger”). This is not okay for anyone but most importantly children. According to another source, children are growing and need healthy food sources in order for them to grow into healthy, confident adults.

Nicholas Kristof is a two-time Pulitzer prizewinning books and “Prudence or Cruelty” was feature in the New York Times in 2013. In “Prudence or Cruelty” it discuss the potential of ridding our society of food stamps to help boost our economy. Children everyday wonder when, not what, their next meal will be. As sad as it sounds, but “5 percent of American households have very low food security” (Kristof 172). This basically means the household can run out of food whenever, and this usually leads to a parent not eating to make sure their kids have enough to eat.

Later on, viewers saw that Barbie was at last able to qualify for benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, allowing her a sense of relief. The average worth of a food stamp provides individuals with roughly three dollars a day. Although this money presented Barbie with some comfort, attempting to acquire healthy yet affordable food on such a minimal budget was a challenge in itself for Barbie. Sadly, Barbie is only one of millions of individuals who struggled or are still struggling with these life altering issues to this day. As a critical thinker, I conclude that A Place at the Table demonstrated how world hunger is the origin for environmental and social affairs for America.

Hunger is a serious problem throughout the world, but today I will be focusing on hunger in america. Just for reference, I don’t mean the time between breakfast and lunch. I mean people who don 't know where their next meal is coming from, or are starving. I will be delving into the problems that exist, systems set up to help people do, and what an average person can do.

According to the Economic research service of the U.S department of Agriculture that the family had at times, “limited or uncertain access to adequate food, caused by either economic or social conditions.” In other words the family didn’t always have enough food to feed everyone. Did you know that 1 in 5 U.S. kids don’t get the food they need every day? This negatively impacts kids’ health and development, but this can also negatively impact them academically as well as emotionally and socially. No Kid Hungry is an organization that is making a difference regarding this problem. No Kid Hungry was founded by Billy Shore and his sister Debbie Shore in 1984. Since then, No Kid Hungry has raised and invested more than $528 million in the fight against hunger, and has won the support of national leaders in business, government, health and education, sports, and entertainment.

Last year almost 21 million kids nationwide are on free or reduced lunches. These kids eat their main meals at school and don’t get much while at home. During the summer this can be a disaster. While children in poverty are on long breaks, their families can’t afford to keep feeding them. This results in very non nutritional meals or no meals at all.

For twenty five years the church of the apostles in New York has fed the homeless every morning, never missing a single day. But the food that the church can provide grows smaller every year, Anna Quindlen states “the issue is measured in mouthfuls” and follows up with “ In Los Angeles 24 million pounds of food in 2002 became 15 million in 2006.” These quotes give the reader a logical reason to be empathetic towards the hungry by explaining the problem and giving statistical reasoning as to exactly how monumental the problem actually is

In a country that wastes billions of pounds of food each year, it's almost shocking that anyone in America goes hungry. Yet every day, there are millions of children and adults who do not get the meals they need to thrive. We work to get nourishing food – from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers – to people in need. At the same time, we also seek to help the people we serve build a path to a brighter, food-secure future.

In the discussions of food insecurity, one controversial issue has been the prevalent misconception of why people are suffering from obtaining nutritious food on a consistent basis. On one hand, Frank Eltman, a writer for the Business facet of the Huffington post, argues that university students are facing food insecurity due to college expenses exponentially rising within the past decade. On the other hand, Adam Appelhanz, a police officer featured in the documentary “A Place at the Table,” contends that due to budget constraints he has not received a pay raise in the last four years, and is now inevitably utilizing a local food bank in order to ensure that he has something to eat each month. Others even maintain that food insecurity is synonymous

But the sad answer to this question is that it is extremely serious. In the nation, Washington is firmly in the middle of the pack, ranking as the 25th hungriest state. In 2014, about 600,000 people participated in Washington’s Basic Food Program each month and about 38 percent of those receiving basic food were children. This means that 228000 children are suffering from hunger where the state needs to step in to help them. The poverty plays the biggest factor in causing child hunger.

There are a lot of problems in the world like poverty and pollution but hunger seems to be the most severe to me. There are so many different types of people who are famished most of the day just because they are homeless or because of their race. Studies show former foster youth, L.G.B.T. students and students of color are at substantially increased risk. One group of people who are in hunger the most is college students. College alone is so expensive that a lot of students can’t afford to even feed themselves.

People around the world go hungry everyday, but it’s not a normal hungry. 795,000,000 people don’t have enough food to live a healthy life (http://www.foodaidfoundation.org/world-hunger-statistics.html ). This is men, women, and children near you. Imagine not being able to provide food for your children! 16,000,000 children struggle with hunger (http://mashable.com/2016/07/14/child-hunger-united-states/#BCHw.No5Waqm), and 60% of the world’s hungry are women(http://www.thp.org/knowledge-center/know-your-world-facts-about-hunger-poverty/).

According to dosomething.org, one in five American children face hunger. In theory, this means that in my class of 20 kids, roughly four of them face hunger. According to a CNBC article, 42 million Americans suffer from hunger across the nation. This food insecurity as the Federal Government so kindly puts it, exists in every county in America.

The difference between any of us is circumstances that we as “kids” are out of our control. Death of a family member, loss of job, physical disability, the list goes on and on. It could happen to any parent, any family, any student. In the United States there is no reason for any one to go hungry. There is no reason for a students only meals to be those eaten within these walls, to go home at night knowing there is no dinner, going home on Friday knowing there won’t be anything until they come back to school on Monday.
