Thus far NASA had primarily focused on taking baby steps to achieve what they had. While these achievement seem like incredible strides in our eyes, the amount of what remains in the universe to discover is limitless. Although in an ideal world we would have the resources necessary to continue growing at the same rate as during the Space Race, the current high costs of technology had created a roadblock in space travel. Roger D. Launius claims that NASA’s large and ambitious programs failed due to technological challenges and budgetary pressures. Therefore, the question arises; do the benefits outweigh the costs?

Space has helped hone the skills of scientist. By using satellite technology for space, they were able to use the same concept for Earth. Even with all the benefits of space, its major down falls are cost, risks, and low chances of reward for their efforts. Many space explorations cost fortunes with little to come out of it, making it almost seem not worth it. The risk is another key factor, with little known about the majority of space, many outliers can appear out of nowhere and can cause death to anyone that happens to be working up there.
It is within our best interest as humans to continue to support the space programs. NASA has several space programs that have contributed significantly to scientific research, technological advancements, and our understanding of the universe. There are three major , and these are the ‘real’ human reasons, the fact that NASA significantly benefits the U.S economy, and the fact that space exploration contributes to politics. Instead of funding for movement to another planet, the world should be funding the protection of Earth. WWF, World Wide Fund for Nature, does exactly that. Funding for outer space could lead us to settle on another planet. Without knowledge of how to protect planets and how to actively fix the harm we created on the Earth, humanity should not settle on another planet. Instead, funding for WWF could lead their missions of organizing work around six key areas: forests, marine, freshwater, wildlife, food and climate.

What would it take to continue our planetary exploration agenda? The values behind the space exploration program in the United States is undermined due to the funding required to maintain the program. The cause of this relates to the poor budgeting for the programs, work migrating from a public agency to private agencies, and finally declining enthusiasm in students becoming future researchers. A unique solution to address this concern would be to explore how our funds are being divided up between the areas of education and the aerospace to better manage them. Understanding these issues will allow us to preserve our drive in both the present and future in planetary exploration.
