The story of the human race is one of humble beginnings. From caves, to space stations orbiting Earth, many questions were asked and many discoveries were made. But what drove these great minds and what lead to the discoveries that would change the course of our species’ history? It was the thirst for knowledge of the universe around them, a thirst that could only be quenched by science. Science cured polio in the 50’s and flew us to the moon in the late 60’s. Ultimately, these feats will pale in comparison to what future generations will do. However, there are some who disagree with this notion, and feel that we do not need science in our public education system, but instead should bring about creationism and religion in place of science in public schools. To illustrate, a recent poll conducted by prominent American research-based, global performance-management consulting company Gallup in 2014, suggest that nearly 20% of Americans believe that creationism should be taught in public schools. On the contrary, in order for …show more content…
To validify this statement, several experiments were conducted by the University of British Columbia's psychologists Will Gervais and Ara Norenzayan in 2012. One experiment correlated people’s religious belief and their scores on a popular analytic thinking quiz with deceptively simple math questions. found that getting people to think analytically and critically, even in subtle ways, will weaken the strength of their beliefs. Harvard University psychologist Joshua Greene had this to say about the experiment. “Obviously, there are millions of very smart and generally rational people who believe in God. But it (the findings of the experiments) poses a challenge to believers: If God exists, and if believing in God is perfectly rational, then why does increasing rational thinking tend to decrease belief in
Miracles in the Production and Destruction of Faith In basic religion classes, students are told that as Catholics, they need to have a faith in God and that their faith may not seem reasonable at times. As the students get older, they are told that in order to strengthen their faith, doubts, and working through these doubts, are an expected part of their lives while miracles may strengthen their growing beliefs. To further complicate the matter, students are taught that too many doubts can bring about a loss of faith, as can doubts from these same miracles. In John Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany, Irving discusses this balance between healthy doubts bringing about faith and too many doubts eroding faith.
Those who criticize Harris believe that forcing people to choose whether they believe in faith or science will only further divide the scientific and religious communities. Harris acknowledges this argument, writing “that if we oblige people to choose between reason and faith, they will choose faith and cease to support scientific research.” (Harris). This is potentially dangerous to the future of science. Polarization could drive funding and support away from the scientific community and limit further advancement.
People today look for solid evidence to explain their wonderings about natural phenomena “Those with a magnitude higher than 7.0 -- more than doubled in the first quarter of 2014 compared with the average since 1979” (Yan 2). This shows how we rely on evidence to explain what is happening to the planet. Whereas the Greeks in 700 B.C.E. looked towards religion to find a
It is important to know that Curiosity has contributed significantly to the evolution of the human species. So why should humans stop with Earth alone? Why not expand our horizons? In this essay, With the help of articles, Humans Need to Explore Outer Space by Claudia Alarcon and Let Robots Take to the Stars, by Eiren Caffall, I will explain how Outer Space has an inexhaustible source of knowledge that we can learn from and help assist in the solutions concerning Earth’s origins and our place in the Universe.

As religious beliefs usually guide people to the right, moral path, he believes that his “test” is the proof that everyone has the religious belief trait, because once the children realized they were being watched by a supernatural being they would not cheat. Do you agree or disagree with this hypothesis? (Provide a rational for your opinion). I disagree. I believe that people are more worried about the punishment that can be given to them by humans during this lifetime, rather then by God or any other supernatural character in the next life.
The issue on whether religion and science can work together has been debatable for centuries. Neil DeGrasse Tyson in his article the Perimeter of Ignorance argues that science and religion cannot coexist. In his article, the author explains that religion is all about the Bible and the Bible primarily focuses on the explanation of the origin of the world. He puts forth the point that this concept is far different from what science is and that they do not complement each other. This essay intends to prove that religion and science can work together with no issues.
Existence of God Lewis possesses a strong belief in God. He states that the human population consists of “the majority who believe in some kind of God or gods, and the minority who do not” (39). I agree with this statement because there are many people who have faith in God because their faith gives them happiness and direction in life. The belief in a higher Intelligence causes people to live on Earth with satisfaction. Lewis also argues that the scientific method cannot explain if God exists or not (58).
The lessons learned from the Space Race, both in terms of scientific advancements and international collaboration, remain relevant as humanity looks toward the future of space exploration and the possibilities that lie beyond our home
For Rand, religions such as Christianity also inhibit people from reaching their full reasoning capabilities as they force people to believe that they should live a life of submission and inferiority. Rand doesn’t agree with the idea that other philosophers have proposed in the past that reason and freedom have already failed and that we should rely on faith (Rand,
All in all, after examining the arguments that have been put forward against Pascal’s Wager, the wager fails to provide acceptable reasons as to why claiming to believe in God will be beneficial to those who are believing in God
Students are encouraged to form their own opinions and think open-mindedly based on the information presented to them, yet in the topic of life’s origins, they are no longer being afforded this opportunity because of the ban on the teaching of creationism. Creationism should be taught in schools because it does hold validity with several well-respected scientists and utilizes evidence observed by scientific studies to accurately support its main aspects. Critics often dismiss creationism as a hoax that lacks serious thought and accreditation from accomplished scientists. However, several well-respected scientists agree with the theory of creationism as a rational explanation for the
After understanding the concepts of evolution and creationism my vote goes to supporting Evolution. I would support evolution because students will be given accurate information of how different and similarities forms of life, the change in population, and the process of new forms of life came to be. This will bring out the best for our upcoming future because students will use the proper evidence in making more rightful decision that will actually help our society better than before. They would not make any decision that will be based off of religious belief and that is where creationism fall in. Creationism is more towards the religious belief that God has created the world and developed divine creation.

Nicalea Greenlee Astronomy, 7 December 15, 2017 Science vs. Religion Science and religion has always been an argument for years. I think science and religion are both very important to the way of life and how we see the entire universe. But I believe religion is more believable than science. For science can be proven wrong at any given time and religion can never be stated untrue. Such as the story of creation, evolution, practices and beliefs can contradict these theories.
