The Siege of Yorktown was the most significant moment of the American Revolution, due to the fact it caused the surrender of British forces and the recognition of American independence. The siege's success was due to the Continental Army's strategic planning and the French navy's coordinated efforts. It demonstrated the American colonies' strength and unity in their pursuit of freedom.
The siege of Yorktown was a joint effort between the Continental Army and the French navy. General George Washington devised the strategy after spotting an opportunity to trap and defeat the British army led by General Lord Cornwallis. Washington and his army marched from New York to Virginia, joined by French forces led by General Rochambeau, to surround Cornwallis and his army in Yorktown. Admiral de Grasse's French navy arrived with reinforcements and supplies and successfully blocked the British sea escape. Both sides exchanged fire and suffered heavy casualties during the siege, which lasted several weeks. However, the Americans and French held firm and maintained their positions, and the British army was eventually forced to surrender on October 19th, 1781. In the Battle of Yorktown, the British Army had to surrender about 8,000 soldiers. This song is mainly sung by Alexander Hamilton and Marquis de Lafayette, but it also includes some other characters such as Hercules Mulligan with a few lines from George Washington and John Laurens. The sing also includes the company, cast and crew, and ensemble, the cast singing on stage, in the background. On the 19 of October, the majority of Cornwallis’ army marched right out of Yorktown between the lines of the American and French troops. This line stretched on for miles, leading to a field where the British were to lay down their arms and return back to Yorktown where they were later led to prison camps. Although the British still had 26 thousand troops stationed in North America, the British moral was low due to the loss of Yorktown. Replacing the lost army was questionable, seeing that England was also engaged in struggles in India, Gibraltar, the West Indies and Ireland. A year later in the March of 1782, Parliament passed a resolution stating that the war against the US would cease.
In the starting years of the war, the British generally won most battles due to their far superior sea power. After the invasion of Canada, the American colonist rebellion invasions and attacks continued. Battles after battles were being fought and everywhere the anger and the revenge taking nature was visible in both the colonists and the British officials’ eyes. The next 2 battles occurred in Trenton and Princeton of New Jersey. The Battle of Trenton occurred 26 December 1776.
The Battle of Saratoga showed the world that the colonists had a chance at winning the war. The French Navy and French troops were instrumental in the Patriots’ success. The Battle of Yorktown is considered the end of the Revolutionary War, as Britain lost the will to fight and General Cornwallis surrendered. The French Navy stopped all reinforcements coming from New York and French troops assist in the bombardment of Yorktown. Cornwallis runs out of supplies under this constant bombardment and is forced to surrender.
Aforementioned General Cornwallis fortified his troops inside the city and patiently awaited the British fleet, which he assumed would come to their rescue. Sadly, for Cornwallis, this was not the case, for the French had come to the aid of America and had just achieved their first, and only, major naval victory by decimating the fleet Cornwallis was awaiting. With no other alternative, the British General and his forces engaged in a siege which ultimately ended with British surrender.
