The War of 1812 was an armed conflict between the United States and the most powerful naval force in the world, Great Britain. The war, which would have a great impact among its people began on June 18, 1812 and finalized on February 18, 1815. This disastrous war was a result of a global conflict and Britain’s injustice actions toward America. As the war broke out, both countries faced devastating challenges such as casualties, destructions, and invasions, but in the end the treaty of Ghent would be the resolution and this would then come to be known as the “second war of independence.” Great Britain was constantly at war with France for global superiority. The United States felt that the British did not respect them the slightest as they would impress American sailors to serve on their ships. troops were underprepared. During the war, American naval forces gained victories in the Atlantic and on Lake Erie, while Britain was focused on their ongoing war with France. Another, major event, which astonished Americans and left many demoralized was the burning of the Capitol building and the White House. America’s future appeared to be more ambivalent than ever before as the enemy had their eyes on the vital seaport of Baltimore, Maryland. On September 13, 1814 the British troops started shooting bombs and rockets on Fort McHenry. Despite, the United States dubious thoughts of their fate, with perseverance they were able to stop the enemy from advancing. However a change of events occurred when American’s naval force now led by Thomas Macdonough’s won the significant battle of Plattsburg Bay on Lake Champlain, which would force british troops to abandon its invasion on U.S. northeast and retreat back to Canada. This would then led to the treaty, which created peace among the two
pd.2 The War Of 1812 In the War of 1812, the Us went up against the greatest naval power in the world, Great Britain. In a conflict that would impacted on the young country’s future. The immediate causes of the war of 1812 were a series of economic sanctions taken by the british and french against the us as part of the napoleonic wars and american outrage at the british practice of the impressment especially after the chesapeake incident of 1807.
Lieutenant Thomas Macdonough’s victory at the Battle of Lake Champlain on 11 September 1814 was the decisive battle that secured an American victory in the War of 1812 by causing the British to withdraw from the north east and Chesapeake Bay. Without Macdonough’s genius strategy, the British would have secured Lake Champlain, taken Fort McHenry at Plattsburgh, and kept control in the Chesapeake Bay, which in turn would have resulted in a British victory of the war. After two years into the war, the British maintained the upper hand. Despite major naval victories by Chauncey and Perry at Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, the British still held a blockade across the east coast of the United States.
The Americans had never liked this, and because of the victory in 1812, the British presence in America was destroyed (there were still some British settlements
A group of people know as War Hawks believed the British never really accepted the loss from the American Revolution. The pressure from the War Hawks most likely would have ended up leading to a war with Great Britain. Therefore, the war of 1812 could be considered the second war of American
The war of 1812 was between the United States of America and Great Britain. It was the first war declared by the United States of America, lasted from 1812, and ended in early 1815. The war was a complicated affair because of its ambiguity. A reason for its ambiguity was the complexity of its causes and more so because, no great president is associated with it. Despite its obscurity, its significance should not be ignored, because it was an important turning point, a great watershed, in the history of the young republic of the United States of America.
The War of 1812 is often a long forgotten war. It has been easy to skip over while learning about the history of our country. People often go from learning about the formation of our country in the Revolutionary War, to the Civil war that almost divided our young nation. No one can deny that these 2 wars are important in the history of the Untied States, but the War of 1812 made America the nation that we are now. Often called our second War of Independence from Britain and our second war with Native Americans, the War of 1812 broke any ties of control that Great Britain had on the newly formed nation, as we trumped the world’s strongest and largest navy.
By the time a declaration of war was complete, the troops were in place and ready to invade Canada. The U.S. troops were unknowingly unprepared as they were about to take on a well-managed defense led by Sir Isaac Brock, administrator in charge of upper Canada. On August 16, 1812, the United States suffered a humiliating defeat after Brock and Tecumseh’s forces chased those led by Michigan William Hall across the Canadian border, scaring Hull into surrendering Detroit without any shots fired. Events in the north looked gloom for the United States, but their spirit was lifted after commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s success in the Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813. This victory placed the Northwest Territory firmly under American control.
One of these being the capture and burning of the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., in August 1814. Nonetheless, American troops were able to
The Battle of New Orleans was the last major battle of the War of 1812. The fight began on January 8, 1815 when General Andrew Jackson led 4,500 U.S. troops fight against 7,500 British soldiers. In the end, the U.S. and Britain signed a treaty (Treaty of Ghent) to end the war; however, there was another battle began two week later because of the news not arrival the U.S. If there were better communication on 1812, the Battle of New Orleans may not begin.
Many conflicts and even excuses led America to declare war on England. This war is known as the war of 1812 or the forgotten war. After all the failed attempts to mend problems with England ,Madison finally asked congress to declare war. Things that led up to the war of 1812 were impressment, conflict with the Native Americans, hunger for land , and etc. This war is a turning point in history and displays America's true potential to Europe.
This gave inherent power to the British and stifled American advancement in the area, as the British were now able to sail anywhere on the lake. In the late summer of 1813, the British fleet came across the American fleet at Fort Niagara. The two fleets sailed but never began a formal battle. The two fleets spent days trying to maneuver into the advantage, but neither fleet could. After the Americans lost a few ships, mostly due to accident, the two fleets separated, with the British having that advantage, but no decisive victory was won.

Despite what was gained as a result of the war there were many dire consequences for France, Britain, and the American Indians. The war drastically increased English’s debt and the British until this time didn’t care about their new colonies, but because they were in debt they started heavily taxing the colonies which caused resentment between the British American colonies and England. The resentment continued to increase. The Americans were being heavily taxed and were under heavy British military supervision. The British took away their freedom in order to pay off their debts.
