The Battle of New Orleans was a monumentous moment in the evolution of New Orleans. The importance of the Battle of New Orleans was to make sure Britain was not able to conquer New Orleans because they would take control of the Mississippi River and essentially control sea commerce. The events that occurred from 1763-1829 resulted in New Orleans being governed under different regimes to ensure safety from Britain. There are two primary sources that will be discussed in order to help define the time period I have chosen. The first primary source is the Treaty of Paris in 1763.
The war of 1812, also called the second war of independence was during 1812 between 1815 between the Great British and the United States. Because of the war between France and British, British limited the trade of the United State. Besides, the US wanted to expand their territory. So, the war broke out. Before the war, both sides were not ready for the war.
The war of 1812 occurred on June 18, 1812. This is when James Madison, the President of the United States, declared war on Britain. The war lasted for two and a half years. Then a peace treaty was signed by James Madison on December 24, 1814, but the fighting ceased January 8, 1815. In the War of 1812 the United States, which was a nation running on the Constitution for twenty five years met Great Britain on the battlefield for their second war over the past 37 years.
According to the text, "It took weeks for news of the Treaty of Ghent to arrive in the United States, so the fighting continued in America even after the treaty was signed in Europe." (Tindall and Brown, Page 262) In those weeks where battle persisted, Andrew Jackson had been leading his men for some time, against the British and the Indians in Fortm Mims and onto Mobile and New Orleans. " Along the Gulf coast, forty-seven-year-old Major General Andrew Jackson had been busy shoring up the defenses of Mobile and New Orleans."
There were actually four battles that took place in New Orleans. These battles all took place on different dates. The battle that took place on December 23, 1814 was the first technical battle of New Orleans, as mentioned in The War of 1812 by Don Nardo (93). However, as John McManus states, the battles that took place on January 8, 1815 was considered the Battle of New Orleans mentioned in American history books. This battle was fought by an army of artisans, farmers, and frontiersmen against highly trained British redcoats (“McManus).
During the War of 1812 there were two naval battles that were important to the outcome of the war. Both battles took place in freshwater far away from the ocean and the more well known single ship duels between the United States frigates and the British ships, and both had a lasting impact on the war. The first was the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813 under the command of Oliver Hazard Perry five schooners, three brigs and a sloop captured and defeated two ships, two schooners, a brig and a sloop of the Royal Navy at Put-in-Bay in Lake Erie off the coast of Ohio. The Battle lasted for hours and Perry’s flagship Lawrence was demolished causing him to transfer to the Niagara.
War had been going on for several years now, at the time many Americans wanted to compromise with Great Britain. But, Americans did not accept the first peace offering from them. This war would take seven years to end, seven years of hard fighting. Some of the British were trying to escape Britain, they went to what is now known as America to escape the king. A group of five men started to make the treaty for the war to end.
The War of 1812 was not only a 2nd War of Independence but
Two weeks after The Treaty of Ghent was signed in December 1814, in January of 1815 rumors of American victory in New Orleans had been heard everywhere. The terms of the Ghent was that America gained fishing right to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the boundary line between Canada and America was restored, and “status quo ante bellum” or everything should go back to normal before war. Britain agreed to stop impressing American sailors. However , the treaty created hostility that continued between Britain and America until it was ratified by Congress in February 1815, The U.S the cost of this battle was $105 million .
The last battle of the war was the Battle of New Orleans. This battle was the war winning battle. According to The American Journey textbook, it states “At the Battle of New Orleans, Americans achieved a decisive victory.” Some people think that the British won because that had held more land during the war.
February 18, 1815, marked the signature of peace and time of no more battels ending the war of 1812. This war would fundamentally shape the history of America bringing us up to par in the eyes of the world as a legitimate country, furthering American expansionism in the form of manifest destiny and labeling the federalist party as traitors fundamentally insuring their doom. This war brought about a lot in the history of America while the war is often forgotten it leads to at least one of Americas biggest ideas of the 19th century. After bloody battles such as the battle of fort Mc'Henry on September 13-14, 1815, or the battle of New Orleans on January 8-26, 1815, American troops had proven that once again they were able to stand up to and defeated the world super power of the time.
In the tee chart that we did in class it says, The battle of New Orleans is when President Jackson won the battle of 1812 and killed 2000 british soldiers. He was called
The capital itself was overrun and burned by British troops. However, as History.com states, “American troops were able to repulse British invasions in New York, Baltimore, and New Orleans, boosting national confidence and fostering a new spirit of patriotism.” Major General Andrew Jackson faced off against Sir Edward Pakenham in the infamous battle that was more specifically fought approximately four miles east of New Orleans in Chalmette. It was the final battle of a war that History.com says began “an era of partisan agreement and national pride.” At New Orleans, Jackson and the Americans were massively outnumbered and outgunned.
While the navy fared better than the army, they were still underfunded and lost frequently. The only massive military victory was the Battle of New Orleans, which was only won after the conclusion of the war. James Madison, while not an active member of the negotiations ending the war, assisted the talks that led to the Treaty of Ghent. The war lasted almost three years, with an overall cost of $158 million to the American side. The Americans also lost almost 17,000 men, with over 4,500 soldiers wounded.
