The decline and fall of the Roman Empire in the West between A.D. 197 and A.D. 476 There have been many theories as to what caused the decline and eventual fall of the great Roman Empire in the West between A.D. 197 and A.D. 476. Political, military and economic issues were mainly responsible for the fall of Rome in the West. There is strong proof that these were the three main causes. To expand on political problems, things such as corruption were an enormous contributing factor as well as lack of strong leadership. Military issues were those of the problematic situation of expanding borders, barbarian knowledge of military tactics, and the resulting end in loss of control over the Empire. One of the other causes for the fall of Rome was the slave labour. The number of slaves increased considerably in the first 2 centuries of the Empire. The Roman's dependence on slave labour led not only to the decline in morals, values and beliefs but also to the temporary stop of any new technology. Romans could rely on the slave labour for all their needs but this reliance inhibited technological transform and development. The poor treatment of slaves led to several Servile (Slave) Wars. In the beginning of Christianity the attitude Romans had towards slaves changed noticeably in the later centuries. The manpower provided by the number of slaves that Rome had depended on had declined drastically with manumission (the act of freeing a slave). Some Romans would even sell themselves into wilful slavery, including into the arena, to become famous or to pay off large debts. One of the biggest reasons Rome fell is because the military. The military started to become sluggish and weak. Since this happened soldiers fought the goths without any protection for their chests and heads (doc B.) This made it so soldiers were easily killed in battle by archers. Adding on to that Soldiers were exposed to wounds because they have no armour so they would think about running and not fighting (doc B.) When the Roman Republic reached its peak, it soon started declining. There were many different political, economic, and social problems that developed when Rome surmounted more and more people. Legions started to demand higher pay resulting in raised taxes. Also the desire for goods from outside the empire grew making less economic growth within Rome. As more products were shipped to Rome pirates started to steal more and more items making stores go out of business back on the mainland. High tariffs were placed on imported goods in a desperate attempt to get money flowing back into Rome. Furthermore the lack of new conquests also instigated the decrease of money flow into Rome because they were not stealing gold.

The Roman economy heavily relied on slave labor, and this put many small businesses and farmers out of business. The wealthier patricians that owned these slaves grew richer and so the gap between the rich and poor citizens grew. The empire, so large already, gradually halted in its expansion which ceased the import of more slaves causing the decline of Rome's primary agricultural workforce. Now, this was a problem.
