In an effort for people to correctly identify themselves, languages adopt and replace numerous terms over time. When it comes to terms to define one’s gender, there is a correlation between the terms and a person’s age. Anne Curzan’s article “Guys and …?” explores the issue of finding age appropriate terms to describe women. The article discusses how this dilemma is prevalent for female college students, as at times neither “girl” nor “woman” seems suitable. The article is able to cleverly start a discussion by sparking the reader’s interest. Curzan uses playful language and shows curiosity in her writing, making the reader feel equally interested in the blurred line between a female being a “girl” or a “woman”. The use of rhetorical questions begins by sparking curiosity in the reader, Curzan states “So what’s a female English speaker of college age to call herself?”. This causes the reader to notice that there is a disparity in how this age group chooses to identify without the author having to state so. Therefore, the tone of the author does not appear overly persuading or convincing. Rhetorical questions such as “What about faculty calling [female college students] girls?” used later on in the article involves the reader by causing them to form an opinion in response. In particular, female college students would find themselves reflecting on past experiences of being labeled “girl” and conclude whether they deemed this appropriate. Another way in which Curzan’s writing pertains to a younger audience was the use of informal language such as personal pronouns. In using personal pronouns and informal language techniques such as exclamation, “Oh goodness!”, the writing becomes easier to relate to for the average college student since informal language is used more commonly in their daily lives. While targeting a particular audience in the article may be successful in creating a stronger response from that audience, it could lead to disinterest from readers not belonging to that
This passage really stood out to me because it is a fond and genuine moment between two characters that often come across as lost and are exploited incessantly by Russell. The story that Suzanne retells is humorous and preposterous, revealing the personality and the carefree attitude that any ordinary teen should possess. You can see a real warmth and friendship between the two girls, as an episode of something close to normality briefly suspends itself in their portfolio of otherwise offbeat experiences. Susie O'Brien's article 'It's time to honour gay couples and allow them to marry' (The Advertiser, November 20, 2010, p. 27) is arguing the side of pro-gay marriage in the debate of marriage equality. This argument is made using ethos, logos, pathos and suggestive language as to guide you to her side of the argument. Susie begins by talking about herself and her experience on the subject of whether or not she had a choice when growing up straight or gay. She demonstrates her knowledge on the topic by referencing her personal history; however not truly showing why her opinion should be listening to rather than others. Her argument is very personally based and draws examples such as herself and her family or friends.

After reviewing Leslie Steiner ted talk: ‘Crazy Love’, I found it to be an eye opener as well as a life long lesson. As I was evaluating her speech, I thought she did a good job overall, although some areas could have used some minor adjustments and/or improvements. Starting with her Topic selection; I thought it was a great topic considered it appealed to the audience who looked like they were between the ages of 20-45, just around the age she had mentioned for domestic violence victims. I thought her introduction were missing a few elements that could have made it that much better. I felt her introduction could have been more confident and including an audience adaptation could have made her introduction that much stronger.

Girls are taught from a young age that in order for them to be worthy they must fit into a narrow, and often unhealthy, mold. There are many arguments individuals may make regarding the history of gender-neutral pronouns. Arguments may include the fact that gender-neutral language has not been around for a long time and therefore professors can do without it, as they have since the beginning of time. In fact, individuals such as professor Jordan Peterson claim, “‘I will never use words I hate, like the trendy and artificially constructed words ‘zhe’ and ‘zher’” (Lecture 10, p. 40). In general, especially in the 21st century, there has been a rise in ‘slang’ language, which has not been around since the beginning of time, or even in last century.

The “What Girls Are Made Of” Nike advertisement is inspired by a popular Russian song titled, “What Girls Are Made Of.” Judging by the title, the commercial is clearly geared towards girls, more specifically girls who are interesting in athletic activities and sports. While Nike’s objective is to sell its sports wear, it also sells an empowering message that defies stereotypes through the effective use of rhetoric. To begin, the advertisement begins in the setting of a stage and a large audience listening in agreement as a little girl in yellow charms, “Girls are made up of flowers, and rings and gossip and marmalade.” These are just few of many belittling stereotypical descriptives for a girl.
