This piece of evidence shows that when the re-introduced idea of humanism was brought to the people during the Renaissance, it was very influential at the time, but people were still not fully on board with the new idea. Although these ideas were very progressive at the time, they did stir some opposing and confusing ideas from others. On top of this, scholars were not the only ones with ideas regarding religious reform; laypeople began relying on individual relationships with God and mystical experiences rather than looking to the church for guidance. The Great Schism did not contribute to the decline of the Middle Ages because it destroyed religion but because it influenced people to explore new religious practices and move away from the broken state the Church was in. The exploration of different ideas led to the beginning of a new, more modern time period and the end of the Middle Ages. The Catholic Church was so important to the Middle Ages because it influenced numerous aspects of European life, having the ability to make and unmake kings, isolate through excommunication, and even execute.

During this period the Renaissance Popes failed to fulfill the churches spiritual needs, and they were often involved in worldly concerns such as Pope Julius II who was a “warrior pope” leading armies into battle. Christians were disgusted, they viewed the Pope as their spiritual leader, someone to lead them spiritually not into battle with the enemy. The church failed as many of the church officials were ignorant of their spiritual duties and more concerned with accumulating more wealth, and the use of their position within the church offices to their advantage to further advance their careers and fortunes. (Duiker, World History, 421) While the spiritual leaders of the church were failing their responsibilities many of the people were looking for some sort of meaningful religious expression and most importantly salvation after death.

Reasoning had helped others look at the sky above and start looking for more things to discover based on the belief that the sun was the center of the universe and not what the church was wanting the people to believe. The last would be rational thinking, people had believed that the constellations (stars, or zodiac signs), were the reason for our thinking, walking, and regular body functions. One man had thought that what they were saying was untrue, and had decided to look into the research further and actually dissect human corpses to find out what we were really made of. The Renaissance reached to an end in the late sixteenth mid seventeenth century. The churches loss a lot of power and grasp of feeling of independence, human expression and investigation led to envy, treason, murder, violence and theft. But than again the Renaissance were the ones that painted the way to a lot of achievements and inventions in a lot of different areas of culture, society, science, religion and modern day life. A lot more advances were proficient during this era that kept on being increased in value, considered and developed in modern day. The Renaissance had a huge influenced on the establishment America was based on and keeps on effecting how American culture and society exist today.

In the Renaissance, science and mathematics produced culture-changing advances and global discoveries, especially those in astronomy, medicine, chemistry, anatomy and architecture. Sophisticated advances and specific concerns about the environment characterize today's scientific community. The Renaissance laid the groundwork for much of today's scientific advances. During the Renaissance, all of these social, economic, political and scientific changes increased the need to learn to read, write and use numbers. Gutenberg's printing press made knowledge and literature available to the masses, often in vernacular languages, and allowed modern culture to develop.

Throughout the Middle Ages, religion was a strong, pervasive force in society. P- As the middle ages came to a close and the modern world began to rise, new political battles and internal conflicts commenced in Europe regarding european balance of power. During the Renaissance, Europeans rediscovered the ideas of the Greeks and Romans, including the individualist, humanist,and rationalist beliefs. Prior to the 1300’s, it was human nature to have a life revolved around the Church. When the Rebirth started in Italy, people started valuing education, art and writing, a secular life rather than one ruled by religion. However, not all non religious people had the same philosophies on life. Many Renaissance Thinkers believed in individualism, humanism, and rationalism.

Which results in the failure of the Roman Catholic church and the break up of the old feudal structure. The renaissance movement is often seen as secular and people were more concerned about their own point of view now rather than listening to the church. The main reason why people were following the church during the Middle Age was only because people were looking for salvation and popes and church saw that as an opportunity to manipulate people for their own advantages. As Europe exited the Middle Ages, an era known as the Renaissance began, which was the most influential period of European history, and the effects of this era can still be felt today. The Renaissance, which is French for “rebirth,” was a period of prosperity and cultural revival in Europe. As feudalism broke down and learning spread, the main topics strayed away from religion to other ideals. The Renaissance notably changed man’s perspective of both himself and the world around him. As education became more accessible during the Renaissance, people’s lives began to stop revolving around religion, and instead focused on art, literature, and science.

The Church was very much responsible for removing knowledge from Europe because they labeled anyone who proved many of the “true” Church doctrines wrong a heretic and executed them. The humanist movement of the Renaissance led to most of the Church reform through the rediscovery of this lost knowledge. Now that people were beginning to become educated, even the semi-literate could evaluate the Church with some level of scrutiny. This scared the Church and in 1502 they held one of many book burnings in an attempt to destroy any knowledge that went against them, but it only inspired the intellectuals of Europe, “It was a futile bull - the velocity of new ideas continued to pick up momentum - and the Church decided to adopt stronger measures.” (99) Shortly after this burning Copernicus proposed that the Earth was not the center of the universe, a theory that undermined the official Church teaching.

There are multiple causes of the Italian Renaissance, both long term and proximate. The Crusades causing the renewal of trade were long term causes of the Renaissance. These increased the population and flow of people through Italy. The amount of influence the church held and the Bubonic Plague were more short term, as the church influenced the education system and lost control of politics, causing the change in direction of the common person’s concern as well as the Bubonic Plague causing people to leave their homes.
