Many people refer to the Renaissance as a time of “re-birth”. The Renaissance came after the Middle Ages, but after the Renaissance, it was also known as the dark ages. The Roman Catholic Church faced detrimental issues because of the Renaissance. During this time, new ideas were formulated, and the Europeans parted ways with the past. Freedom in regard toreligion became widely accepted, which caused issues for the Roman Catholic Church. In the Middle Ages, philosophical and scientific work was mostly done by people who were religious, such as monks and clerics. When the Renaissance came, this type of work was done by people who were not religious, which changed the way people thought. If the work was not being done by those who were members of the Roman Catholic Church, they would have people thinking in a different way that had nothing to do with religion. If people were listening to those who were non-religious, they may begin to change their views on religion as well, which in result would negatively impact the Roman Catholic Church and their members. Wealth and power became more of a focus to people during this time, and their old values, such as religion, began to diminish. Individualism was a major factor in the Renaissance. The modernized views led people away from the Roman Catholic Church because they thought it was taking power over them. They wanted to have freedom to be in control. They were passionate about their own opinions and feelings and the Europeans wanted to communicate these opinions and feelings to others.
