For my senior project, I observed surgeries and clinical visits at Oregon Urology Institute. I selected this area of study for my senior project because I have always had an interest in the practice of medicine. I wanted to learn why modern medicine is perceived widely as safe and reliable. Going into this project, I had some idea about what a surgical environment would be like. For the last two years, I have been volunteering in Mackenzie Willamette’s emergency department. I helped around and talked to a lot of people in the medical profession and I observed how they communicated with each other. I saw the benefits of good communication and how it can positively improve the work environment. And I saw how negative communication can distract from what really matters; providing safe and reliable care for the patients. Ferguson had a long discussion on safety in the operating room. Before each surgery, the surgeon performs a pause. The pause safety practice in medicine where the name, age, procedure, allergies, and area of the surgery are stated to the entire surgical staff. The staff listens and make sure That all the information stated is correct, and if not or if everyone is not on the same page there is a chance to clarify what is going on. When I finally saw the pause in action I was impressed about how formal it was. It made sense, there needs to be communication so that 's there are no mistakes or misunderstandings. Surgery is a big deal, you don 't want to accidentally begin to remove the wrong kidney, or give them some medicine that could cause an allergic reaction. Furthermore, there 's also a formal side to communication in an operating room which I feel is equally as important as the mandatory pause. Communication in the operating room is very important. If surgeons and nurses are not communicating effectively it can directly affect the quality of patient care and safety. In 1999, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a report, To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, which estimated the fifth leading cause of death in hospitals in the United States was due to health care errors (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, Freida, 2016). To help reduce these errors, effective communication needs to be exercised throughout health care.
Finally, it will explain the importance of ethics in communication and how patient safety is influenced by good or bad team communication. The first method of communication is mutual respect. The patient and clinician have a partnership based on trust. The patient has respect for the clinician 's experience and the clinician has respect for the patient 's wishes, needs, concerns and builds on past experience to meet immediate needs. (Paget, 2011).
When the patients would start talking more it was an indicator to me that they were trying to put a hold on the procedure. I would try to help them as much as I could, by explaining what I will be doing and how it will help them. I will have to work on working with anxiety to help me overcome this
In those hospital visits I had become accustomed to the sights and smells of a doctor’s office that instead of reminding me of pain, comforted me. I knew from then on, that the medical field was where I was called to serve.
As we work in the society, we are automatically associated with the well-being of the society and the people. I need to take responsibilities and have knowledge about what is going on with my patients and help them to be actively involved in their daily activities. Being able to communicate effectively with the people is the biggest key aspects of our daily life. I have to use the communication skills through reading and writing in my career which helps me to build trusting relationships with my patients. It will help me to understand the effects of the therapeutic process for the benefits of the patients.
The patients I have worked with have become my greatest teachers. I can’t sit down and flip to a chapter in a textbook that would teach me how to listen to a patient and let their unique history paint the picture of their present illness. A physician that I shadowed told me something that has since resonated with me. She told me how every patient has a story, and you always need to listen carefully because these stories aren’t pointless, they often can lead to your diagnosis. I personally believe the most important member of the care team is the patient; without communicating with the patient there is no chance to obtain crucial insight as to the illness that is presented to you.

In 2005, a family friend by the name of Randy Birdsong was a patient at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital located in San Antonio, Texas. The Veteran Affairs (VA) medical staff was performing surgery on his abdomen. After the surgery, he was notified that there was insufficient space to accommodate his continued care. The V.A. advised him to keep his wound clean with a fresh roll of gauze, and sent him on his merry way. A few days later, Randy was back at the V.A. hospital with a noticeable infection taken place in his abdominal region.
It is perceived that multi-disciplinary collaboration when it comes to service-user care is linked to more positive outcomes and experiences (Clifton et al., 2007). Teams which are able to communicate and are well coordinated have a lower rate of error (Despins, 2009). An effective team can be achieved through an effective model of communication, where members of each profession can openly share their opinions and challenge the opinions of others, in the hopes of improving service-user care and thus service-user safety. 1.2 – explain how communication affects relationships in work setting relationships in work setting in health and social care are very important we need to build a relationship with are colleagues and mangers staff to enable us to work effectively.it is essential to establish good relationship and communication with service user and there family’s but you must always have boundaries and keep it professional effective communication and working relationships . In order to work effectively with a service user line mangers, colleagues and families you must be able to meet their needs relationships are also governed by body language facial expression smiling and ways in which others listen and talk to you. If the communication is poor between you and a service user and with your work colleague the care the service user receives will not be right for them if you’re not talking to them or communicating with them how are you going to know what they like or don’t like.
As an aspiring physician in Emergency Medicine, it is hard to describe typical physician workday activities. Every day is unique and filled with many opportunities to learn and develop clinical, interpersonal communication, leadership and critical thinking skills. Despite this, there are certain routine activities which I had the opportunity to observe through my shadowing experience in the Emergency and Operating rooms at California Hospital Medical Center, Los Angeles. One day, a two year old patient came into the ER after falling and cutting her head. The patient’s mother told the physician that her daughter is nervous and scared.
As I was getting my assignment for the day, I was thinking “Am I going to remember what to say, or how to perform certain skills?” But, to my surprise, I was able to jump right back in. My patient was an 84 year old male, admitted with a blocked common bile duct. I was, able to talk with him, and do his assessment with no problem.
REFLECTION OF THE INTERVIEW 2.1 Description A component of the Effective Communication module, is an Inter-professional Education (IPE) enrichment activity and we were put into groups with the Pharmacy students. There were in total 2 Nursing students and 3 Pharmacy students. We were tasked to interview a healthcare professional. We interviewed Dr Edwin Lim from Tzu Chi Free Health Screening and Free Clinic (TCFC). He specialises in Family Medicine.
For communicating in this situation I should promote active listening and open questioning. This should help me to find out as much information as possible which should lead to a more thorough conclusion. Also clear and concise interaction with other professionals like the multi-disciplinary team is highly important. To solve a lot of problems that may arise when caring I will need to show assertiveness and good advocacy skills.
