Rainsford was a hunter but he became a hunted. Rainsford is faced with the challenge in the middle of the story. Also, the importance of empathy is shown through the changes that occur in Rainsford in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Moreover, it seems that Zaroff considers himself a god who can snuff out life as he pleases.

When an unfortunate accident throws Rainsford overboard, he stays calm (Connell 28). In this sudden event, he needs to stay calm, and he does that very well. From this point, he immediately looks around and surveys to find a place to go that isn’t stranded in the ocean. “General, I wish to leave this island at once” (Connell 36). Hearing all about the island and General Zaroff makes Rainsford decide he needs to leave.

Rainsford knew that he was unable to retreat and forced to face danger. Rainsford realized that animals felt and how they had to face the danger just like how he did.

The way they act in urgent situation, proves that they have different personalities and points of view. Rainsford gets on the island, escaping from the danger - swimming for his life, and when he gets there he is forced to hunt. He knows that either he will die or either his victim, there is no other choice, but he keeps his emotions and fears under control, "his face was set, and he forced the machinery of his mind to function". He always keeps going even when he beilives he can’t and wont survive.

In order to survive in any situation, you must have integrity, bravery, and prior experience. All three traits give you the intelligence to make good choices, the courage to do what is best, and prepare you for different positions. In this essay I will explain how these traits are present in different sources. Some people show one trait, others show all such as Lexi Youngberg (Neville). In any time you need to survive, look to these traits; integrity, bravery, and past experience.

He had to struggle and swim in order to stay alive. Once he fell off, he knew he was in danger. On page 174, it says “The cry was pinched off short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea closed over his head.” This is the exact moment when Rainsford’s body hit the water, and he was off the ship. Rainsford desperately tried to tell the yacht to come back,

“‘You have won the game.’ Rainsford did not smile. ‘I am still a beast at bay…’Get ready General Zaroff’” (20) He doesn’t kill Zaroff for any reason other than revenge. By beast at bay Rainsford is saying he doesn’t have anywhere to go, so he wants to fight Zaroff, until someone dies which is ironic because Rainsford states that he is against killing another human being when he first meets Zaroff at the beginning of the story.

This example shows that Rainsford had to use his wit and mind to survive and out play his foe. Towards the end of the story Rainsford escapes by jumping off a cliff into the ocean to get away from General Zaroff. Rainsford escapes the island in a very clever way: “He reached it. In order to survive our adversities some of us need survival factors. For instance, Salva Dut from “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park needed survival factors in order to survive his adversities. This book is nonfiction and explains the story of Salva Dut-Ariik and what he did to survive. Salva used many survival factors such as bravery, hope and determination. Salva needed bravery.

On page two of "My Escape from North Korea", Lee explains that she and her family have been jailed multiple times, yet she kept on pushing to get her family and herself to freedom. The determination that Lee demonstrated is what got her family to safety. This is an inspiring example of determination. Lee also shows determination on an earlier paragraph on page 2.

He later went on to tell about how he weakly pulled himself onto a rocky shore, knowing that he had now escaped from the tortuous waters, he went into a deep sleep.

When Zaroff mentions the fact of a sailor losing his head during the hunt, Rainsford wants to leave immediately but has no choice; he has to stay. Rainsford doesn’t feel like he can trust the General and doesn’t want to agree to take part in the hunting. Rainsford believes that Zaroff can’t be trusted, “Oh, you can trust me, said the Cossack. I will give you my word as a gentleman and a sportsman. Of course you, in turn, must agree to say nothing of your visit here.

When he first fell off of his yacht and into the water, he wanted to thrash about like an animal and swim crazily back to shore for help, but instead he started swimming “with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength. He began to count his strokes; he could do possibly a hundred more…” (218). So in that moment, Rainsford was able to reason with himself and control his urge to thrash about the water. Instead, he moved with agility.
