High Noon is an award-winning movie from the 1950s, which is also widely regarded as one of the best one hundred films in the history of Hollywood. It tells the story of a marshal from the Wild West named Will Kane, who has to fight for his life as a murderer by the name of Frank Miller is hunting him down and eager to get his revenge. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story about the hunters and the hunted, and focuses on a hunter named Sanger Rainsford who finds himself stranded on a mysterious island after plunging off his boat. Imagination is a light on a road that would normally be dark. It is a portal to a new universe that normally would be shut. And it is something that can be used so easily to form great works of literature off a single idea. Richard Connell uses his imagination and ours, to create a short story that is so enticing, and so captivating, that it tangles the mind of the reader into a web of suspense that can only by escaped by flipping to the next page. The way Connell holds this suspense and thrill in The Most Dangerous Game is by putting a likeable character into multiple situations of tension.
Using Rainsford's senses involved to really get the reader more into the story. “Then he straightened up and took from his case one of his black cigarettes; its pungent incense like smoke floated up to Rainsford's nostrils.” (page ) this was when Rainsford was in the tree above General Zanoff. Zanoff was confused and maybe frustrated that hunting Rainsford would be harder than he thought. You can almost picture Rainsford in a tree in panic, and the smoke floating up his nostrils.
He had to fight himself to stay on track. He was so scared in the jungle while the General was trying to hunt him. On page 186, it says “He could not say where he was. That was suicide.” This shows the reader that Rainsford may be thinking of what could go wrong, and is not thinking on the positive side of things.
Rainford exposes his selfishness and lack of empathy by saying, “‘Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes-the hunters and the huntees. Luckily you and I are hunters’”(2). His actions throughout the story show his cruelty too. Rainsfords profession is killing animals, and while he does
It takes courage to stand and take control of a situation. Controlling one’s own life is necessary to get the life you want. If you allow others to dictate your life, you give away your power thus allowing them to determine the life you lead. The following short stories, “The Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, demonstrates what happens when control is in the wrong hands. While “The Sound of Thunder” proves control using fear and the demeaning of men by Travis, and “The Most Dangerous Game” shows its control by the degradation of men at the hand of Zaroff.
This scene shows that there was something evil, bad, scary about the island. Also, the crew were jumpy but Rainsford was not. The author, Richard Connell, uses foreshadowing to make readers think that Rainsford’s going to end up on the island and something scary is going to happen. “ The place has a bad reputation. Didn’t you notice the crew seemed a bit jumpy today?”.
This shows he is alert by how he realizes the hounds, Zaroff, and Ivan were all coming so he quickly set up a trap to try and kill them to escape. Also it shows that he can remember a trick he learned before and again apply it to his situation. And finally it shows that he is extremely alert by how he sets the trap up so quickly so he does not get captured by Zaroff. In conclusion all these examples show Rainsford is a survivor by how he shows alertness in dangerous situations and how he gets out of that
Body Paragraph 2 Topic sentence: Secondly, the situational irony of the story depicts the theme because of Eckles killing a butterfly and ruining the chain of other butterflies in the near future. He was supposed to arrive in the past, kill the dinosaur and come home to the present and actually live. But that didn’t really go as expected.
How will this turn out for rainsford read the story to find out. hunts something so very unusual. Throughout the story connell uses Mood irony and suspense . Mood is used in this story a lot but here was a really amazing version of it that I found. When Rainsford is on the island and approaches the mansion that contains the hunter of
“After swimming for what seemed like forever, I heard an ear piercing sound off in the distance. I decided to swim in the direction of what I knew was a gun-shot, knowing that where there is men, there is food.” Rainsford explained. He later went on to tell about how he weakly pulled himself onto a rocky shore, knowing that he had now escaped from the tortuous waters, he went into a deep sleep.
When Rainsford had fallen off of the ship into the sea, the way he took care of the scenario and worked against the odds of survival showed the theme of resourcefulness. Two life threatening moments when Rainsford had to be inventive and quick-witted were when he had created the traps from scratch in order to survive death by general Zarrof’s hands. Throughout the story there were several moments in which general Zaroff actually congrajulates, and compliments Rainsfords accomplishments in being so resourceful. Rainsford, like people in poverty, shows the theme of resourcefulness throughout the whole story. The author conveys the message that even when being pitted against un-beatable odds.
He wants to leave right away. Rainsford was antsy but after spending more time on the island he became nervous especially when Zaroff said “The hunting was not good last night. The fellow lost his head. He made a straight trail that offered no problems at all. (Connell 30).
