Introduction:
Sport psychology is devoted to research in sports and how psychological factors affect the performance of an individual, and how performance affects psychology. It is important to understand and know what is making professional athletes in team sports to keep on pushing themselves to the limit whilst others stop as soon as they feel pain or tiredness. What psychological factors influence this kind of behavior and why is vastly different in people.
Most athletes push themselves to the limit and keep improving themselves in order to achieve a goal which they set for themselves. This can be explained by looking at the athletes’ motivation. Motivation is defined as a cognitive process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behavior. Its stimuli vary from athlete to athlete and person to person. The performance of an athlete can possible be affected by the amount of motivation he / she is experiencing. These small variations can determine whether an athlete performs better because he / she is motivated or performs worse due to lack of motivation.
An athlete can be internally or eternally motivated. Internal motivation can come from his passion for the sport

It is reasonable to assume that female’s motivation can have a bigger impact on their performance than a male motivation can have on their performance since female intrinsic motivation is higher than males. However, it may not be the case since there was no research done on whether the amount of motivation has a different affect on the performance. The study conducted by Simon and Houghton (2003) aimed to identify the factors that influence the success of professional athletes both on and off the field. The authors found that athletes who possess a strong work ethic, discipline, and dedication are more likely to achieve success both on and off the field. Additionally, athletes who are able to effectively manage their time and prioritize their responsibilities are more likely to succeed in their personal and professional lives. The study also found that athletes who have a strong support system, such as family, friends, and coaches, are more likely to achieve success both on and off the field. Furthermore, athletes who are able to effectively communicate and build relationships with others are more likely to succeed in their personal and professional lives.
These motivations are the reason an individual participates in the activity, either for an intrinsic or extrinsic reward. In my swimming career I have noticed that Motivation of an athlete varies based on the individual and can be applied accordingly by the coach when coach/athlete relationship is increased. An example of an intrinsic motivated individual was when I was shown a lane of individuals that weren’t necessarily the strongest swimmers but included a few athletes that are doing a second sport. I was informed that many of them compete for their personal enjoyment. These swimmers strived for personal improvement by some of the swimmers putting personal goals on their kickboard as they kicked.
Athletes’ mental health is becoming increasingly popular. Mental health can be defined as “a person’s condition regarding their psychological and emotional well-being.” Mental health can affect how individuals feel, act, or think. This is becoming a controversial topic in the sports industry. As someone studying in this field, I find this topic extremely important.
In the realm of sports psychology, there are two main theories of how coaching influences motivation, the Behavioral Approach to Coaching (BAC) and the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Both theories work in different ways in order to increase motivation and produce desired behaviors from athletes. The Behavioral Approach to Coaching utilizes operant conditioning to shape desired behaviors. Operant conditioning concerns the relationship between three events, called contingencies.
The mind is what causes an athlete to set limits. When one trains like a“Stotan,” they eliminate the notion that they cannot do something. Once an athlete believes he/she can accomplish anything, and they are willing to work to get to that point; then there is not a thing that can hold back the “Stotan.”
Are athletes more intrinsically motivated or extrinsically motivated? Motivation is an important factor when it comes to sports. The types of motivation in sports are intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and amotivation. Intrinsic Motivation is when people participate in activities just for the pleasure and satisfaction they get out of it (Ryan & Deci, 2000). On the contrary extrinsic motivation is when an action is performed in order to receive an external reward (Pelletier et al., 1995).
From the beginning of the Greek, Romans to our day-to-day life, sports has been affecting all its users. We can safely assume now that a body in motion will stay in motion, with that, a body at rest will tend to stay at rest. Our thoughts and our worries will flee our state of mind when we experience great physical activities.
