The 7 Habits Profile is a measurement scale of someone’s leadership and his or her effectiveness. After completing the exercise and calculating the various categories, I scored on average between thirteen and sixteen points per section. The category I scored lowest in was category 8 determining y ability to listen. I already have been told by many that I am easy to talk to. I need more practice not letting my mood get in the way of being open to ideas and suggestions. I have noticed that I can have a short fuse at times and even a little bit of an attitude if something upsets or annoys me. I need to learn how not to allow a bad day or bad mood to affect my ability to listen. Equally important when interacting with others is body language. …show more content…
Caring, encouraging, motivating, developing and supporting their employees are all qualities necessary in a good leader. I am proud to say that these are all qualities I possess and practice in my everyday nursing. Helping them make a delivery table, running in to help if their delivery isn’t going well, and calling a physician for them if they can’t leave their patient’s bedside; these are all examples highlighting those characteristics . My challenge is to now use what I already do in my daily practice and apply it to leading others. Many successful relationship-based leaders possess these characteristics and use them as a glue to bond people together. One of the most important traits for a relationship leader is humor. Someone who can poke fun at themselves, not take themselves too seriously and who are naturally funny will make employees attitudes a little more cooperative when difficult situations arise. A great sense of humor creates a lighthearted atmosphere rather than adversarial. A smile goes a long way and laughing always breaks the ice. A boss that can find humor in various situations makes staff feel more at home, and more comfortable with their
When most people think of a leader, they picture the president of a club or an organization. However, it is my belief that a good leader is actually just a good person who leads by example, rather than any other authority. In this context, I satisfy the leadership requirement for the NHS. As I have mentioned before, I have always been ready to help others. Not only am I ready to help as an individual, I am also able to work well with a team.
Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
Behind every great nurse is a great leader. Leaders help establish a drive and a commitment to achieve a goal, and they provide skills to make it achievable. Through some research, a nurse leader that I have come to admire and respect is Patricia R. Johnson, MN, RN. Johnson is Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. In taking the 360o Refined Self-Assessment I have learned my five highest leadership skills are: communication, outcome concern, information sharing, credibility, and decision fairness. My five highest rated behaviors are: communication, communication, communication, outcome concern, and outcome concern. I agree that I do well in communication. Moreover, I feel information sharing is part of a sound communication platform.
Being a leader involves many different characteristics. A leader must set the example for all others in the group, because if they are to show up late to practice, there isn’t a reason that any of the other members should not do the same. A leader must take risks for the benefit of the group as well as make sacrifices for it. Becoming the leader of the group requires for them to be the most dedicated. They must work harder and not be afraid to lead the group.
Once the nurse fully understands and comprehends the entire situation, ethical decision making should be clearer based on the biblical principles he has established for himself. I use to think that a nurse leader was only someone who was the smartest and fastest when caring for a patient. Bed Number Ten has made me realized that a nurse leader is one who has characteristics such as environmental awareness, patience, and compassion. As I result, I aim to include these characteristics into my nursing care.
Completing the seven-habit profile assessment provided great insight into my leadership and management style. I have been managing people for twenty years and I have many examples I can reflect on. I will begin by discussing my low score areas. The low score areas were categories one, five, and seven.
All the qualities mentioned above are the qualities that make a good and an effective nursing leader. Nurses also feel that they are valued when transformational leaders reach out to them; they get excited to participate and share their knowledge that also contributes to strong cooperation or openness. Contingency theories put forth the idea that the success of a leader hinges on the specific situation at hand. A situation can be proven effective based on the leader or the leadership style attached. The factors that would determine this would include the task, the personality of the leader and the composition of the group that is meant to be led. Its basic assumption is that leadership-success or failure – is situational. There are a number of sub-theories that fall under the general contingency umbrella.

They are able to connect, communicate and coordinate across multiple departments, professional opinions and voices, and the daily schedules of patients. Advocating and designing care with the patient and family is a true skills set and cultural attribute that adds tremendously to a culture of safety and patient – centeredness but requires the most able leadership to build these bridges across the many professionals engaged in care. Building this culture is a leadership challenge and there is no one in my experience better able to make these changes than nursing leaders ( Maureen Bisognano, 2009). Nurses should not just be at the bedside or within the nursing community but must be involved as leaders and decision – makers throughout the healthcare system. As Maureen Bisognano (2009) points out, the best nurses are accomplished envoys among different players and interests involved in direct patient care, which is a skill needed throughout organizations and businesses, not just in hospitals or

Nursing is gaining influence in all aspect of healthcare practice, therefore it is important for nurses to develop good leadership skills at the early stage of their practice which is the key to all nursing career and nurse managers can become good leaders with effective training and enhancement of their skills in leadership. Most nursing managers are tossed around by their leaders when they themselves are leaders in their capacities. A nursing manager aspiring to become a leader must be committed to excellence and passion for patient’s advocacy, employee’s protection and be a role model, living by example.
