The more I don’t know, the more I know.
The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology.
My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools. Having grown up in my old school, Norwegian International School, I had grown reliant on my friends and the easy-going environment there. Changing schools in 2004, I arrived in International Christian School. My first few months at ICS was a complete nightmare. Everything was different, the environment, the people and the work load. At the beginning of the year, I cried continuously for a month, latching on to my mom; terrified to go to school because of my shyness, my fear for being the youngest due to me skipping a grade and my inability to find new friends. Unable to do anything more to encourage me, my teacher introduced me to the school’s counselor. Meeting frequently with the school counselor, I slowly opened up to her and found a lot of new friends due to her constant support and advice. To be truthful, my fascination in psychology had been somewhat sporadic; appearing in my earlier childhood years then getting deflected in my earlier middle school years due to the rigmarole over my grandma’s operations, then again reemerging in my high school years after my grandma’s death.
My grandma’s death was the trigger for my reemerged love for psychology. Watching my mom and my beloved aunts uncle’s heartache, yet being helpless to help them soothe their pain, it made me feel very miserable and inadequate. I kept asking myself what I could do for them? What were their needs? I earnestly wanted to find out. However, I couldn’t. As time passed by, this uncomfortable feeling still stayed around me.
While interviewing school counselor, Melissa Gomes from Friendship Southeast Elementary Public Charter School, I was able to obtain a lot of information pertaining to a school counselor’s profession. Although, I have acquired plenty of information about a school counselor occupation throughout the last year and half of attending Trinity, the interview was very beneficial and knowledgeable. Ms. Gomes gave great insight that allowed for a better understanding of a school counselors role. Ms. Gomes was kind enough to answer several different questions pertaining to her role and responsibilities as a school counselor. As a low-income, first-generation Mexican American/college graduate, my personal identities and experiences uniquely position me to contribute to RFU’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts (DEI). Through my journey, I have encountered various challenges and triumphs that have shaped my perspective and deepened my commitment to promoting DEI in healthcare and beyond. My lived experience growing up in an economically disadvantaged and medically underserved community has heightened my awareness of the healthcare disparities and inequities that exist, especially being raised in a traditional Hispanic household. It has fueled my passion to address these issues and advocate for accessible, culturally sensitive, and equitable healthcare.
I am impassioned by many topics ranging from politics to fine arts but I can talk only endlessly about psychology. Psychology is an interesting field of study; imagine understanding the most complex structure in the universe and how everyday things can impact it. I find myself entranced by child and cult psychology, reading books by psychiatrists and watching AP Psychology study material in my free time. The book that completely encompassed my interests in psychology was Dr. Bruce D. Perry’s “The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog”, which discusses how trauma, ranging from abuse and neglect, at a young age may affect individuals as adolescents. The school based therapists and school psychologists at Fremont High have really helped me and assisted me is tough times and I would like to provide the same support for future students. Starting a new school can be described best as terrifying. I was expected to not only start a new school, but also make new friends and try my best to fit in. It was decided that my siblings and I would attend a private christian academy in order to have a more spiritually focused aspect of education. After attending the first school for a few years, it was decided to switch schools and attend the school I am currently at. This decision was based on the fact that the spiritual environment would be much stronger, as well as teachers who shared more values in his or her spiritual walk.
In the article, National Survey of High School Psychology Teachers: Executive Summary, the author discusses statistics of high school psychology teachers in America. There are several different factors that the survey received information for. This survey was held December 2011 through March 2012 with 1,087 participants. At the age of nine-teen there I was walking across that stage receiving my diploma. It was very difficult making up all of the credits I missed, it was also difficult battling mental illness as well as not having anyone in the stands cheering for me, but I persevered despite my circumstances. While my Catholic school experience was static – I was in the same class room everyday and saw the same classmates – high school experience is dynamic, I see new faces and new class rooms every day. However, this is not a hindrance to my education; I am currently ranked 5 out of my class of more than 300; in Catholic school my class size averaged around 20 kids a year. No matter the circumstances, I stay dedicated to my studies while also trying to challenge myself. In addition to my studies and education, I am dedicated and committed to helping my Catholic school community.
Personal Statement Lying in bed as a little kid my thoughts grew like a wildfire, racing, from thoughts about candy, to episodes of Tom and Jerry, or colorful and imaginative thoughts. Yet the question that persisted in my head was why the person I looked up to the most left me, without explanation, or simply saying goodbye. At the same time I was reaching an age where I was beginning to understand the world around me, which left me scarred mentally, and emotionally. What most affected me was when my father left me for periods of time throughout my life. the father figure in my life that was supposed to be there in times of a needed role model, and to be the one to shape me into a man, not being in my life around my mother and sisters built a confusion inside of me as a little kid creating mixed emotions about my dad.
In five years, I hope to be in college, studying about something I'm interested in. I want to get into a good college with a great psychology program where I can learn enough about it so I can turn it into a progression. One thing I've noticed is that it's hard to find a hobby which is directly related to psychology, unlike other professions where your hobbies can be very similar to what you would be doing in that job. I believe that given the environment I was born into, where I have had to help many people to get through tough periods in their lives, I could be a good psychologist. This being my reality, I have grown to enjoy listening to people’s problems and difficulties and trying to help them to the best of my abilities.
On the threshold of my high school graduation, I had my heart set on studying Social Work, as being Vice President of Student Union of Chu Van An high school, I had always loved designing and organizing social activities and events . Nevertheless, as the highly competitive university entrance exams approached, my parents had other ideas for me. Since the world was still reeling from the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, they urged me to major in courses related to business, which were very promising majors at the time. As is customary in Vietnam, I followed my parents’ wishes, and in hindsight I am very glad that I did.
