Early Childhood Education Scholarship Essay

For this assignment, I interviewed my mother Elaine Meskouris. Director at Evlavia Doulavarous Preschool in Flushing, NY. 1. Me: So Mrs. Meskouris, why did you become a preschool director?

Early in my life, I used books as an escape from the harsh reality in front of me. When I was around five years old, I was trapped in an abusive and sheltered household. When the yelling started, I used to hide under my bed and stay very quiet. I would read any book that I could find to keep my mind off what was happening around me. I made myself a safe space under my bed with a light and pillows.

Head Start is a national comprehensive child developmental service program geared towards the nation’s pre-school aged children who are low-income (W. Beard, 2015, Personal Communication, September 16). The Head Start program was first created in 1965. The Head Start program promotes school readiness by the provision of educational, health, socio-emotional development, nutrition, mental health, physical and other services (W. Beard, 2015, Personal Communication, September 16). GETCAP (Greater East Texas Community Action Program) Head Start serves the following counties: Nacogdoches, Houston, Walker, Trinity, and San Jacinto (W. Beard, 2015, Personal Communication, September 16).

Congratulations to the class of 2016, we have been on a long journey to get here today! We each came to Walden for different reasons yet we find ourselves with a common goal to make the world a better place one child at a time. We do this through our vision, mission and expectations created within ourselves and our University. We have achieved so much and will continue to do so after graduation because of the passion and drive we carry within each of us to make education better for every child.

Literacy is one of many words in the English language that is not accurate in definition; rather it varies from person to person through cultural experiences, community, exposure, and even academic submersion. Literacy, or being “literate,” is a skill that people use constantly to perform daily tasks such as reading road signs, texting a friend or calling a family member on the phone for a few examples. Through my experiences, however, literacy is as a form of communication, writing, and reading. Each family creates traditions in their household, ranging from food traditions to holiday traditions. Everyone has traveled a different road to get to where they are today. Some roads may have felt longer and more rough, but they were worth the ride. My road to literacy started out on what I would call a dirt road that had a steep incline. What I could not see at that time was that once I got to the top, I had a smooth ride ahead of me. If I would look back at how far I have travelled I would say it was worth it all the struggles along the way, but what is important is the sponsors I had that pushed me along the way.

1. What information did I know prior to reading information presented within the chapter? Prior to reading chapter one I can remember learning about PL 94-142, This is the education for all Handicapped Children Act, this law was put in place to order that all children with special needs receive service within the public schools. After reading chapter two one thing that I already knew was that everyone has a desire to know if there child is developing at a normal rate. One thing I knew prior to reading chapter eleven was how to conduct and effective parent conference.

Head Start programs bring and excellent pattern to close the gaps between children from social-economic differences from those of low social-economic background. Familiarizing children with academic skills in indispensable for most children, the average children needs practice to understand and apply what they learn, for this reason Head Start contributes greatly with young learners. In both articles, research has found advances in children learning, but under the national standers testing does not reveal the expected improvement. Children who are read before Head Start are able to recognize symbols as numbers and letters, furthermore they are able to develop reading and mathematical skills during kindergarten. In personal experience, with my oldest daughter we used to read to her five times a week, my wife has been a Montessori methodology teacher for over 27 years and a regular teacher for 24 years when my oldest daughter was in Head Start (Casa de Ninos)

Kindergarten through third grade I attended Rozelle Elementary school. The school had two different buildings, it was the kindergarten through second grade and then the third through sixth grade. I couldn 't This was my favorite school, I loved going here and the people here. My first day I probably cried, I really don 't remember.

When I was one year old my dad made the decision to bring our family from Mexico to The Unites States. He made the decision because he faced many economic struggles. My dad told me when he lived in Mexico he was very poor and was living day to day with the money he earned. My dad did not earn enough money to pay for college, therefore he had to quit college the second year of his electrical engineering career. Now that we live in the United States I have a better opportunity to succeed in life unlike my dad.

Education has been in my family for as long as I can remember; right from my mom who is a proprietress of a private school (Aunty Maria Nursery and primary school, Meiran, Lagos), to my Dad who is a retired principal at Girls Model School, Bariga, Lagos. Although I ventured out of the educational field to study a science related course, I still find myself driven to the educational field, partly because it runs in my family. Being the only child of parents, my mom has always wanted me to earn a degree in education, especially early childhood education, so I can have the knowledge of childhood development and ultimately take over from her when she eventually retires.
