Conflict is very important to a story it makes it interesting, some stories have one conflict some have more than one. A great example of multiple conflicts in a story is in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell man versus man is the most relevant conflict. Man versus nature is the first conflict seen in the story. Man versus himself is a conflict between Rainsford, the story's protagonist, and himself throughout the short story. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, there is man versus man, man versus nature and man versus himself. In the story the most prominent conflict is man versus man. On page ten after Rainsford requests to leave the island Zaroff says that he has to survive three days without being hunted by Zaroff. “‘Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Not only was rainsford in a conflict with General Zaroff he is in conflict with himself as he is finding his way to Ship Trap Island. “‘I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve,’ he said through tight teeth” (12). Rainsford also had a conflict with himself on the island when he was deciding what to do to get away from Zaroff. Rainsford was able to overcome the internal conflict when the dogs were chasing him and he needed to make the decision to jump into the water, fight the dogs, or climb a tree and hide. Man versus himself is very important to Connell’s story. In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” there is man versus man, nature, and himself for conflict in the story. Man versus man it the most obvious conflict in the short story, it is also the most important. Man versus nature is seen right away on page two as the stories first conflict. Man versus himself is not in the story too much but it dictates what happens throughout the game that Rainsford and Zaroff
