The Most Dangerous Game Conflicts
All stories have to have a conflict, the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has three important conflicts. Man against man, man against nature, man against himself are the three main conflicts that take place. For man against man Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting each other in the hunting ‘game’. For man against nature Rainsford is fighting the sea once he hears the gunshots and is trying to get out of the water. For man against himself Rainsford is trying not to give up on himself and keep battling the general so he will not get killed. Throughout the story Rainsford has many challenging difficulties but can he survive and win the game?
One of the main conflicts in “The Most Dangerous Game” is man against man. Man against man first takes place when General Zaroff is hunting Rainsford. The narrator says, “Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eye had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring”(13). Rainsford is scared to death when the general is hunting him because this is a real life or death situation. General Zaroff is pulling tricks on Rainsford to try to get him to come down from the tree. If Rainsford is not careful he could die. Man against man is

Man against himself first takes place when the general tells Rainsford the two choices he has, to fight General Zaroff in the hunting game or to go straight to Ivan where he will be immediately killed. The general says, ‘“The choice rests entirely with you. But I may not venture to suggest that you will find my idea of sport more diverting than Ivan’s?”’(10). Rainsford then has a big choice to make, if he goes and hunts with General Zaroff then he has a slim choice of winning but he could die. If he goes straight to Ivan he will die right then and there. Rainsford is smart and picks to fight the
If I find him, the general smiled, he loses” (Connell 5). In this section of the story, Zaroff is explaining the rules of the game to Rainsford. When Zaroff says “If I find him….. he loses,” you can highly infer by this that when he says “loses” he means they die, so he’s practically saying that is Rainsford loses, he dies. Typically, when one knows they are going to die, they do what they can to save themselves, which is what Rainsford did.
Rainsford even remains cool and calm when the pack of vicious
Everyone has to overcome adversity in their life. In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character, Rainsford, fell of his boat at night time On the Island, Rainsford finds a home where General Zaroff lives. The problem is that the only way he can leave the island is if he survives a “game”. Where General Zaroff is hunting him. So Rainsford has to survive for three days.
Here in the story General Zaroff is injured by a trap that Rainsfords set. “But he was not quick enough, the dead tree crashed down and struck the general.(232) This quote shows Irony when in the start of the hunt General Zaroff thought that this was going to be an easy kill and he could continue on. Throughout the story Zaroff and Rainsford both exert arrogance.
Rainsford faces many conflicts along his journey on the island, such and man v.s nature, man v.s. himself, and man v.s man. He has to overcome all of this in order to keep calm, and survive. One of the conflict in “The Most Dangerous Game”, was man v.s. nature. This conflict presented itself at the beginning of the story, when Rainsford fell into the water.
Rainsford demonstrates courage throughout his journey through the many things he did, like jumping off a cliff to save his life and going against General Zaroff. General Zaroff (the story's antagonist) brutally hunts Rainsford (the story's protagonist) on a deathly land called Ship-trap Island. Zaroff tricks Rainsford into “going hunting”, while he actually hunts Rainsford, Rainsford fights back in a matter of life and death. In Richard Connell's, “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford shows his courage when he jumps off a cliff in a matter of life and death. Rainsford was surrounded by Zaroff and his minions and had nowhere else to go, “Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed.
Comparing and Contrasting: ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ The short story and film version of The Most Dangerous Game contain both similarities and differences. There are always going to be changes form book to movie no matter what. The plot of both of these is the same though; A man is lost on an island and meets General Zaroff. The man is very fortunate at the time because General Zaroff is welcoming.
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” the main character Rainsford had gotten stranded on a dangerous island where Zaroff, a Russian Cossack General, hunted humans for sport. He feels that God put the weak on earth to give the strong pleasure, and up until it was his turn to be hunted, so did Rainsford. Earlier in the story Rainsford had stated, “The world is made up of two classes-- the hunters and the huntees.” And as harsh as it may sound, it is technically correct. The world is made of hunters and huntees, predator and prey.
Firstly, in the story The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because on the island the only way to live is if the stranded people hunt or the stranded will in contrast become the ones being hunted. In the beginning of the story Rainsford is talking to Whitney about jaguars. Whitney is stating that the jaguars must feel some sort of feeling like fear or terror but in contrast Rainsford states that the jaguars have no understanding of feelings. Then Rainsford is put on a island where he symbolically represents the jaguar and General Zaroff would symbolically represent the hunter.
Not only was rainsford in a conflict with General Zaroff he is in conflict with himself as he is finding his way to Ship Trap Island. “‘I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve,’ he said through tight teeth” (12). Rainsford also had a conflict with himself on the island when he was deciding what to do to get away from Zaroff. Rainsford was able to overcome the internal conflict when the dogs were chasing him and he needed to make the decision to jump into the water, fight the dogs, or climb a tree and hide. Man versus himself is very important to Connell’s story.
“The Most Dangerous Game” Essay In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell A man named Rainsford hears a gunshot and falls off a boat on to which he was traveling upon. Rainsford swims to this island to which he heard the gunshots, once on land he walks around and finds an unusual sight A mansion. Andy: Imagine you are stranded on an island, starving and thirsty. You have managed to build a fire and have pushed through countless rainy nights. You are using the skills of a survivor. These skills have been used by other survivors such as Hyeonseo Lee, a North Korean who escaped her country. Aron Ralston uses survival traits to survive being trapped in between a boulder and a wall of rock.
This is both his external conflict and an unexpected turn of events. Eventually, although this was tough for him, Rainsford ends up winning the game. When informed that he had won Rainsford responded: “I am still a beast at bay; he
Throughout the story the reader sees how Zaroff “plays” with Rainsford as he hunts him and not once does Zaroff think he will lose to Rainsford. This is a clear example of the theme to never underestimate your opponent skills or the underdog may overtake you. Connell illustrates this theme through foreshadowing, irony, and, man vs. man. To help us visualize, foreshadowing shows how Rainsford, being the underdog, will overtake Zaroff who underestimates Rainsford. Although Rainsford is not seen as being the weaker link, Rainsford showed he did not pity those below him: “‘Who cares how a jaguar feels all they understand is fear.’
In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford is forced to test his survival skills while he is intensely hunted by an experienced war general named General Zaroff. In this story, Rainsford exhibits some very helpful characteristics like his resourcefulness, his strategic planning, and his ability to reason. As a result of Rainsford’s questioning the validity of General Zaroff’s hunting methods, he ended up playing in the game. Although I believe Rainsford is a very helpful, interesting, and dynamic character, at the end of the story, he must give up his own personal morals to win the game.
