It is evident that one of the most valuable attributes one can have is to be an excellent mentor. Holding the characteristic ability to be a great mentor will allow a person to lead and encourage the growth of another person in many different ways. Mentoring plays a significant factor in the nursing profession because of a few reasons. A successful mentor will communicate high expectations, will be a good listener, has empathy, offers encouragement, and feels generous. (Zerwekh & Garneau, 2014, p. 57) According to Zerwekh & Garneau (2014), someone considered as a mentor should have your best interest at heart and should bolster your self-confidence (p. 59). Mentoring qualities that I have go further than I could eve¬¬n imagine at times. Being raised under Christian values has allowed for my mentoring qualities to be effective in my everyday life as well as the life of others. Coming from a family of six and being the youngest says a lot about me as an individual. I can honestly say that I am a positive role model in and out of the classroom. Having these qualities makes me an approachable human being. My chosen career field will not just be a title and people of the world need to feel that personable relationship when they come in contact with you. If these qualities are not genuine, then one will not allow for me to advocate or bring to their attention network connections that I may have that would assist in any situation that they may have encountered. Taking full responsibility and genuine interest creates a successful outcome. This is the person that I will one day want to be viewed as in the nursing field. Great mentoring qualities from inception to completion in life prove to be effective and especially when the qualities are demonstrated through acts. People today pay more attention to what you do by acts of kindness, love, knowledge, and interest than just verbally speaking. Numerous people have recommended me to be an amazing role model for the others around me. Various of my school projects were used as examples for other students and will be used throughout the upcoming school years. People depend on me in the classroom, and I follow through by helping them. I lead groups with my friends to study for subjects we’re having trouble with. I lead children in my after school care program to do activities, or when they can’t figure out how to play games fairly.
Not only will I work hard to become the best I will take time to listen and learn from all those that choose to mentor me. I love the idea of mentorship because it provides you with the opportunity to learn from those that have been where you currently are. This job
Nursing is a most trusted and gratifying profession. As a nurse educator, I will express my passion for teaching by incorporating features such as clinical assessments, practical application of theory, evaluation, and role modeling into advanced nursing practice, from previous experiences and current experience and clinical practicum to find success and gratification in students chosen profession as well empowering leaners to develop their own strengths, beliefs, and personal attributes to become a good professional. Personally, I do have a positive attitude towards the personal and professional growth, and value ongoing learning and will stive to instill the same into my students learnig journey .. People are influenced by the ones around them; these people can have positive or negative influences. Mentors are role models for you look up to and learn from. The only way for mentors to have a positive influence is if they are heard. Listening is the key. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee creates mentors for Scout to show listening to the advice of those before you can lead to strong morals and an understanding of others.
The professional nursing values I believe are things you can be taught and some you cannot. Nurses are special individuals who ultimately want to care for and help others as much as they can. I agree with all of these values and believe some I will need to work on myself such as competence, illness prevention and patient education. Others I believe I have based on my experience I have already had while caring for others. Some of the qualities I believe I have include: caring, compassion, dependability, empathy, focusing on the patient- defining quality of life, having a holistic patient centered care, kindness, openness to learning, respect for others their dignity and worth and sensitivity.
Reflection Qualities that make an effective nursing leader are the same qualities that many other nursing staff and general public possess. Such as, the ability to support and empower their team members, be well organized, remain consistent with their expectations, and be able to communicate with their team. Support and empower the team members An example of this quality is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) on one of the units at Wascana Rehabilitation Center (WRC), where I had one of my clinical rotations. This nurse would ask each staff member if they had any concerns during their daily huddles.
According to my preceptor last semester I demonstrates a sound understanding of self-care, self-reflection and work life balance. I also have an “understanding of the components of the nurse patient relationship, by maintaining an open and professional relationship with the patients.” I am also “demonstrated self-direction and initiative” (B. First and foremost, the nursing student is one of the key stakeholders in relation to this project. Without the public becoming interested in nursing and enrolling in the program, there would be no nursing school or need for peer mentoring. It is the student that may reap the most appreciable benefits from a peer-to-peer mentoring program, once choosing to become a nurse. As Colvin & Ashman (2010) point out, peers have a much greater influence on each other than most would think, and it is pivotal to capture this relationship in an effort to increase academic success rates. The success of a peer-to-peer mentorship program ultimately falls in the hands of each student.
My teaching philosophy stems from my belief that the gauge of a teacher 's success is how effectively the teacher prepares students, not only for present courses, but for their future professional careers. As a Nurse, I am committed to the nursing profession and I chose nursing since; nurses have the chance to a life changing event to every patient. Nurses promote Health Education, Healing and Prevention of Illness, as well as performing end of life care through a dignified death. Mentees should be comfortable being vulnerable around their mentors and should expect genuine responses from them. One of the most significant qualities a peer mentor should have is ambition. Students are often more inspired by other students who are driven and who have some degree of knowledge as to what they want to do in their future rather than not. These qualities will allow the peer mentors and mentees to build a strong relationship, encouraging success all around. Consider the challenges or barriers to success a STEM student might face.
A mentor in nursing is defined as someone who can facilitate learning, supervise and asses nursing students in a practice setting. This in turn produces efficient and effective students who become competent and will have mastered the craft and art of caring.
