A mentor in nursing is defined as someone who can facilitate learning, supervise and asses nursing students in a practice setting. This in turn produces efficient and effective students who become competent and will have mastered the craft and art of caring. Mentorship is significant to students as it helps students develop their professional identities, attributes and competence and also enables students to learn through the creation of the supportive working and learning environment as an individual (Clutterbuck 2004). Decisions taken by mentors in assessing students have significant impacts on securing the nursing workforce in the future. This is because they help safeguard the ongoing excellence in the delivery of personalized patient care while making a major contribution to the development of the nursing profession. This essay explains how to develop learning, teaching and assessment strategies to support the student to achieve a successful outcome. Cassidy & Kreitne (2009) defines learning styles as a range of contested and competing theories that account for variations in a person 's’ education. There are three main learning styles, the visual learners, auditory and kinesthetic learners. Visual learners mainly learn through seeing. They exhibit visual skills that are demonstrated in writing, reading, painting, sketching, manipulating images, fixing, interpreting visual images, have a good sense of direction and also create visual analogies and metaphors.
As lifelong learning continues, it is important to focus on patients and family outcomes through teamwork collaboration, advocating, effective communication, and equally, self-driven to accomplish goals to create and coordinate activities to promote professional development, is why I have chosen to apply for the ambulatory nurse educator
Students in the nursing program are required to rotate working in a variety of setting under the supervision of an experienced nurse or preceptor to develop a broad knowledge of the different population. The use of clinical supervision has been transferred from psychoanalytic culture and applied to nursing education since 1925 in the
(Barnes. 2015). Nurse practitioners who received a formal orientation had a quick, easy and better transition experiences, with the satisfaction of their role. The foundation of the novice NP when starting the transition is imperative. Therefore, mentoring programs is also a method that can decrease social isolation, and feelings of inadequacy for the new NP’s.
For my senior project I job shadowed a registered nurse on the Acute Rehab floor at Mercy General Hospital. My goals for senior project were to learn the basic skills a nurse needs to help a patient and to learn how to interact with different types of personalities. My mentor for my project was Michelle Whitten, she has been a nurse for two and a half years. Michelle has a B.S in nursing and a B.A in human development. She is certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR, Basic Life Support BLS, Advanced cardiac life support ACLS, Pediatric Advanced Life Support PALS, Cardiac Monitoring, MPR, and Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse CRRN.

From the perspective of a new grad nurse with no experience and a new BSN grad with previous experience from a different unit or facility, my expectations for my mentor or preceptor is the same. I look to my preceptor to help me develop self confidence, gain understanding of the workplace culture, improve competencies when needed, provide a collegial relationship to discuss concerns and get some advice in a situation that is not supervisory (Finkelman, 2016, p.478) Specific characteristics I find beneficial in a preceptor is a consistent and professional approach to their work and myself (a new grad nurse). First and foremost, the nursing student is one of the key stakeholders in relation to this project. Without the public becoming interested in nursing and enrolling in the program, there would be no nursing school or need for peer mentoring. It is the student that may reap the most appreciable benefits from a peer-to-peer mentoring program, once choosing to become a nurse. As Colvin & Ashman (2010) point out, peers have a much greater influence on each other than most would think, and it is pivotal to capture this relationship in an effort to increase academic success rates. The success of a peer-to-peer mentorship program ultimately falls in the hands of each student.
Literature Review “Children know how to learn in more ways than we know how to teach them.” —Ronald Edmonds (1991) Each child learns in a different way, therefore if teachers are mainly focused on instructing the majority auditory/visual learners; the students who have different learning styles needs aren’t being met, which results in lack of basic skills moving forward. The idea of one instructional strategy fitting all is creating a void in classrooms; which in turn is failing to help those students struggling the most. Campbell, Helf, and Cooke, (2008) suggests a reason for some students’ ongoing lack of achievements that, “too often, students are instructed indirectly, watching and listening to the teacher or other students with little or no opportunity to actually read” (p. 268).
Mentor Mentor is an experienced person in a company or educational institution who trains and counsels new employees or students(Oxford English Dictionary).Mentor help to promote personal and professional growth in an individual by sharing the knowledge and insights that they learned through the years. A mentor often has two primary functions,the career-related function which enhance the mentee’s professional performance and development as a coach and the psychosocial function which establishes the mentor as a role model and support system for the mentee. Mentor also has responsibility to serve as the role model,cheerleader or advocate. As kaye observes,mentors support mentees in the risk taking is crucial to their growth. Because their position could directly effect on individuals growth,mentor require some specific skills such as empathizing and ability to ask question.
