Art Analysis: The Last Supper By Leonardo Da Vinci

In this work of art, we are able to see two females standing still and facing towards the sunset as two older men are on opposite sides of them facing towards us. It seems as though this image depicts individuals who have just finished their workday based on the way in which they are dressed. It is evident that he puts forth some of the same techniques used in Iceberg Blues (Fig. 1) such as the images containing city people and the sunset landscape. Also, the individuals in this painting are not communicating with each other or making any eye contact perhaps because they also have different beliefs and cannot relate to one another.

One way paintings demonstrate this is the difference between the Mona Lisa and Madonna Enthroned Between Two Angels. The older painting, Madonna Enthroned Between Two Angles, is unrealistic and has rather depressing dark colors. While the Renaissance painting, the Mona Lisa, is not only much more realistic, but also a lot more cheerful, brighter feel, and became a true masterpiece (Doc A). In the paintings, the fact the Renaissance painting is brighter, more realistic and a famous masterpiece, shows that the Renaissance changed the art style into a unique, amazing representation that changed the entire future of art. The paintings from the Renaissance showed that people saw each other differently than before( Doc A).

Religion. Most, if not all art from that time had to do with God. There was either a hidden meaning about God, or the focus was just there. But during the Renaissance, all that changed. People began to view art in different ways.

    The subject of the painting is a depiction of a mountain landscape. Near the bottom of the picture plane in the foreground there’s a canal through the mountain side. If you look closely you can see someone in the water climbing up the rock. The overall theme of the piece seems to be very peaceful and exciting.     Hassam uses a few visual elements of form to support his painting.

From the fifteenth century to the seventeenth centuries society experienced a shift from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. During this time Europe underwent many significant changes that were often expressed through the historical art. Passionate and experienced artists used their skills to create masterpieces that would highlighted these changes and led to the success of their careers. During this shift Medieval point of views began to fade away and a new Era full of new perspectives began to form. The Renaissance was known by many as the rebirth of the humanist culture.

People have told stories with marble, as well as ink. The focus of the Renaissance was the arts. Artists had evolved their skillsets since the Middle Ages, for example, their paintings weren’t 2D and they focused on people rather than just gods. The detail of sculptures and paintings became more realistic than it had been during the Middle Ages. In Michelangelo's sculpture David completed in 1504, he sculpted an image of David from David and Goliath holding a slingshot, before he kills the beast with a stone.

The painting depicts what seems to be a panoramic view from afar but looking closely each aperture and objects make up the impressions of faces. From the left side there seems to be an aperture looking over a big cliff with branches of trees. This cliff and branches make up the face of an old person. The rock exposures within the cliff form the illusions of wrinkles, wrinkly lips and a long and untreated mustache. The branches give the effect of baldness, contributing to the overall appearance of an old man’s face.

Jan van Eyck made an impression with me when we covered him and class and The Portrait of a Man in a Red Turban is one of my favorites as well. I chose this one mainly because of how busy these paintings are as well as the contrast between the left and right on the right panel. The more I researched Crucifixion; The Last Judgment, the more interested I became. According to the Met Museum, the Crucifixion panel is presented as a first hand account. The left panel seems to have three different scene in one, starting from the top down.

This paper will include an in depth visual analysis of the painting as it appeared on the original canvas. The paper will also address the cultural and religious significance of this work of art in that time period. I chose to do the analysis on The Last Supper because it is an artwork that i have seen many times in my life, but oddly enough do not know a lot about. In this paper i plan to not only inform you , but inform myself on the many aspects of The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci.

The Last Supper is the final meal that Jesus Christ has with his Disciples before his crucifixion. The first significance of the Last Supper is when Jesus Christ announces in the supper that one of twelve of his disciples will betray him before sunrise. The painting shows the story of the scene after Jesus Christ announces the betrayal of one of his disciples. “One of you will betray me” (Bible, by Mark 14:18) the second significance of the Last supper is that Jesus Christ taught his followers the symbol that he is remembered for the sacrifices of his blood and body for mankind. The portrait represents the beauty of the time period. It holds simplistic colors with detailed shading. The artwork is very intriguing to me. I love the detail in the background, there are tiny brushstrokes that makes up the mountains and sky. Also, I find the shading of the mouth and eyes very interesting.
