Black History Month Essay

Throughout the month of February, Black History Month is celebrated. What was originally negro week, founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, and then later changed to Black History Month in 1976, by President Nixon, celebrates the lives and discoveries and impacts African-Americans have had on the U.S throughout history. Shukree Hassan Tilghman, the director of the documentary “More Than a Month,” explores the importance of black history and tries to get rid of Black History Month. The director’s message in “More Than a Month,” is that black history goes so much deeper than just a month of celebration, and to show true respect, Black history should be American history.

“Why don’t we have “White history Month?” Because white history month is every month other than February. The culture of power determines which version of history is told and retold.” Mr. Hanson, my high school social studies teacher always told us, “The winners get to decide how history is told.” I mean, prior to the Women’s Rights Movement, women were stuck in the home while men went to work and supported them, but then women were liberated and able to get jobs working outside of the home, right?

Growing up in a prominently white family with very little diversity aside from some cousins with Bolivian, Chinese, and Vietnamese backgrounds, I can’t say I grew up with really any black culture. I went to schools that were evidently white and then was taught history only made by white Americans. The only time we ever discussed the crucial past of black history was in February during Black History Month. How can we segregate black and white history when black history is American history?

Black History Month is an amazing month. It 's a month where incredible things have happened, many great people have done incredible things in this month. Black History month is based of many people, my favorite is Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great man and he did many great things until unfortunately on April 4,1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot and killed by a white racist man James Earl Ray was sentenced into 99 years in prison. James escaped prison and then was soon recaptured and added one more year to total of 100 years in prison.

Throughout the entire month of February, Midwestern State University has been celebrating Black History Month, an important time for students of color to celebrate what it means to be black, while also educating other students about the cultural significance of the African-American community.   Many organizations, such as the African Student Union, the Black Student Union, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, are hosting events and celebrating the diaspora of African culture.   Some events that are happening on campus to help celebrate Black History Month include a theatre performance called "Facing Our Truth: Theater Performances", a premiere to Marvel Studios ' "Black Panther", and a lecture entitled "Critical Conversations Series: Is Free Speech Free?".

Despite the controversy with the Negro history, the term was basically used with the origin of negro history is from the slavery term. Or with the slave mentality in mind. African American History evolved throughout the 20th century by a vast number of things from politics to entertainment. Then to education, business, health and medicine.

Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. He was the only son of James Nathaniel Hughes. His Father was absent for most of his youth and did not want to have anything to do with black culture. Then Hughes was brought to his grandmothers, Mary Langston. Her house was in Lawrence, Kansas and his mother, Carrie lived with them.

How much of American history do you know? Black history is a part of America’s history, but why is it not deeply taught in schools? In schools we often talk about white American leaders or wars America has won, but not much history of other cultures in America. We may hear a little information about certain minority leaders who fought for a change, but not much facts. If today’s youth aren’t being taught about the thing’s their ancestors have gone through and all the things that has happened and why, many will grow up ignorant.

Black History Month is a yearly celebration of achievements by African-Americans .Today's society shouldn't only celebrate the African-American heroes in the month of February , but should also be year round. The month of February gives people the chance to show black athletes as well as leaders. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most recognized African-American Leaders , his inspiring message can’t be forgotten about even his motivational speech lives on. With the strong heart and mind as well as pluck in African-Americans substructure of slavery, fighting for civil rights, the right to vote. This has created a solid foundation to build ongoing legacy in the future.

Black History Month is a celebration in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for remembrance of important people  in  history because   it was when African americans fought for their rights and stood up for them and demanded equality. There's a lot of  africans who were brave and who were famous for it like rosa parks, martin luther king, and frederick douglass and many more. Katherine G. Johnson is one of those brave people she was a pioneer in American space history. A NASA mathematician, Johnson's hard work  has  influenced every major space programs from Mercury through the Shuttle. She even calculated the flight path for the first American mission space.

The establishment of Black History Month started as Negro History Week in 1969, which paved the way for Black History month in 1976. Historian Carter G Woodson created the idea to spotlight to accomplishments of African Americans. In 1915, Woodson helped the association for the study of negro life and history. Woodson believed that publishing scientific history would transform the way others saw Africans and people with African decent known as African Americans. Woodson wanted African Americans to be popularized by the findings of black intellectuals.

Although blacks have been in America at far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books.

Ancestors before us were not given recognition for the success they attained, and many ideas and inventions were stolen from African Americans by Caucasians, so there is still a great quantity of unknown achievements of African Americans. Frankly, without Black History Month, many would not know the

Langston Hughes was born February 1st, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. In the roaring 20’s he started writing professionally and was essential in portraying black life in America. Hughes grew up in a time of social injustice involving the treatment of minorities (specifically African Americans). As his career went on the Harlem Renaissance became a major movement in which he was essential to.

The Black Lives Matter movement is a movement that has raised global awareness of how minorities, in this case, black people in the United States, have been dealing with racial inequality, racial profiling and police brutality in the criminal justice system. According to Alicia Garza, one of the three women who created the hashtag ‘Black Lives Matter’ on Twitter, ‘the movement was a response to the anti-black racism that permeates the society and the movements of black people in the US.’ The Black Lives Matter movement has often been compared to the black civil rights movement from the nineteen-sixties. The civil rights movement from the nineteen-sixties was also led by black people and their allies. However, the Black Lives Matter movement should be distinguished from this nineteen-sixties-style of activism.
